Replacing 986 Chain Tensioners

I am planning to change the 3 chain tensioners on my Boxster '99, 2.5ltr.

Can i just replace them one by one without using the cam locking tool?

It is not that simple. To be completely safe, you should first check the cam deviation values using a PST II/PIWIS/Durametric, and then the engine should first be locked at TDC (that is the only position in which all of the intake and exhausts valves are unloaded). We would then lock the cams. After replacing the tensioners, recheck the cam deviation values to be sure nothing has moved.

Some have been able to remove them one at a time with the engine locked at TDC and the cams unlocked and get away with it, others have not been so lucky.

All of them are replaced without cam tool but still having the rattle noise at cold startup for a few seconds. What should be next...?

How shure are you about that one?

All i hear is don't worry about it, they all have it...???

I just don't want any noise and it is not supposed to be there, right?

Most of the start up related noises in the M96/87 engine family have typically been related to the cam drives. Some have had cam follower (read lifter) problems, but that is a noise that does not always go away.

Do a search on the subject of the paddle wear pads, it is a common item that causes noise, cam deviation values out of spec, and debris in the oil filters. Sometimes they even totally fail:
