Gauge Cluster Repair

I have a gauge cluster from a 2001 Carrera that I would like to swap into my Boxster. I have reviewed the instructions and it appears to be within my capabilities. However, in looking at the cluster, it appears that one of the LCD's is damaged.post-9357-0-55127500-1356721008_thumb.jppost-9357-0-63836300-1356721029_thumb.jp
Can I swap the LCD from my Boxster cluster or is there a company that can repair this?

Palo Alto Speedometer can likely repair it. They are not cheap but do quality and work and provide a warranty.

Still much cheaper than a new cluster from Porsche (since Porsche does not sell cluster parts - only complete clusters).

Thanks for the suggestion. I sent Palo Alto Speedometer an e-mail and they responded that they could not obtain the parts for repairing the cluster. They offered to reprogram the mileage for $175 plus shipping.

I also received a response on the 986 forum. They seem to think that I could transplant the working LCD from my Boxster cluster. It looks like delicate work, so I would be risking damage to my cluster in the process. I'll search for someone selling a Boxster cluster to serve as an organ donor.

Based on some advice on the 986 forum and some research, it appears that swapping the clock/oil gauge lcd from my Boxster cluster is a possibility. Based on some posts there and some other information I found on the Internet, I have started the dissection process.

So far, I have managed to remove the plastic lens without damaging anything:View+with+plastic+cover+off1356884745.jpgHowever, removal of the damaged clock/oil gauge lcd module is now blocked by the white plastic part that holds the gauges. Based on a review of Chris Zang's pictures from his "for sale" post on the 986 forum, it looks like I need to remove enough parts to get the cluster to this condition before I can remove the lcd: Cluster+with+gauges+removed1356885428.jpgBefore risking damage, does anyone have tips for removing the white plastic part? It appears to be held on by this clip:Bottom+clip1356884945.jpgI also see two screws. One is near the bottom of the speedometer:

Do you have two complete units? If so, could Palo Alto Speedometer use one to fix the other so you ultimately have the set up you want?

Right now, I'm considering removing the lcd from my Boxster cluster and using that. Of course, I need to have reasonable confidence that I won't end up with two broken units.

It has been a while since I have had one apart, about 5 years I tore one down to the MCU. When I was doing it I did not care if I broke something as I would never put it back together again. Basically I had to sacrifice one of them to discover the MCU pin layout. You can remove the gauge faces by first removing the needles. just carefully pry up with a fork. You can put a piece of paper under the face so the fork does not mare the surface. I believe the LCD's are soldered onto the board. If you have a hot air rework station they are easy to remove just heat it up and pull it off. I may still have some of the parts from what I took off it if you need something I can search for them.

Once you have it ready for your Boxster you will need to change the mileage to match your vehicle. And you may have to update the radio code depending on the year. Before you go too far you should make sure that the clusters are the same generation and compatible with your Boxster. There are a lot of different versions of the cluster, that typically match the DME type and CAN bus topology used in the vehicle. For example if your Boxster uses Motronic 7.2 (ME72) then the cluster you are installing needs to have come from a 996 with ME72. Sounds like you got that part all worked out.

Right now, I'm trying to see if heating the clock/oil level lcd with a hair dryer will remove the flaw. It seems to be working a little. I'll give it a few more cycles to see how if it works.

Here's how it looks after 2 5-minute cycles with a blow dryer:

It may be slightly smaller than when I started, but you can look at the previous posts and judge for yourself.

I'm trying to be optimistic. However, if you happen to have a good clock/oil gauge lcd that may be helpful.

      Hi - 2002 996: Scoured the lists but can't find this particular cluster problem anywhere.  In short, my salvage cluster shows a list of errors on start up but my original was fine....  Here's the details.  My current cluster shows an intermittent airbag failure warning on the led screen followed by the idiot light.  It usually occurs at start up, clears at the stalk and the idiot light remains on, but flickers on occasion.  My mechanic had ruled out everything he could related to the airbag warnings and since he didn't have a spare cluster, couldn't swap to test for that. I personally purchased a salvage cluster, removed the battery terminals, installed it and it came to life (I'm also having to buy replacement connector housings because mine disintegrated).  The problem is the info screen pretty much scrolled through a variety of issues like oil pressure feedback, temp feedback, fuel feedback, etc.  The oil pressure gage was also unresponsive.  I expected the odometer to be wrong, but didn't expect all the errors.  I also started the car and while it ran, it did run rough, sputtered a bit.  Do I have a bad salvaged cluster?  Does the cluster need to be programmed (beside the odometer)?

      I have a 1998, ROW C2. Over the past two weeks I have noticed that the fuel gauge is not reading correctly. The gauge will read high (3/4) but as I drive, the gauge will slowly drop to the correct reading over about 15 minutes. As the car sits, either at work for the day or in the garage overnight, when I go to start the car, the gauge will read over 1/4 tank higher than when I shut it off. Then, as I drive, it will drop to where I think it should be (or remember where it should be). I plan to pull the sender this weekend and check the connections, but I don't think it is the float as why would it rise while the car is turned off? Is it possible to troubleshoot the cluster gauge? I have a Durametric so I will attempt the fuel level calibration when I have pumped down the tank. Or am I just fooling myself and the gauge is bad?

      I’m having a weird ‘fuel thing’ with my 2001 Porsche 911… So, I’ve been thinking it gets terrible gas mileage, compared to my 986 Boxster. I expected slightly less, but, it seems pretty bad. Now, I can’t help but wonder if there’s actually something amiss about it.
       
      When I fill the tank completely—and I mean ‘topping it off’ to get every last drop in, my fuel gauge usually looks like this (see the first picture, 01).
       
      That picture was taken immediately after starting the car after filling up the tank (I was still at the pump). There have been occasions where the needle has gone all the way to just slightly past the 4/4 mark (just like the Boxster always does), but it usually lands below as seen in the photo.
       
      However, today I was down to the warning light coming on telling me I’m low on gas. I stopped to fill it up and it only took about $30 worth. That’s odd, with gas prices here and filling up an almost empty tank, that should have been between $44 and $48 (that's what the Boxster runs). I tried to top it off but it wouldn’t take any more, as if the tank was full.
       
      So, I got in the car and started it, and (just like before) this picture was taken immediately after starting the car after filling up the tank (I was still at the pump) - (see the second picture, 02).
       
      Just barely over half a thank.
       
      Any idea what could be going on with this?
