PSE Part Number Confusion...Help!

Recommended Posts

So the good news....the PSE that was backordered from SunCoast has arrived just in time for the Labor Day Weekend!!! But now I am confused. Suncoast emailed when they said it was backordered and said we would be receiving the new kit with the switch. Well first off the invoice had both of the kit part numbers (with and without switch) on it. The kit came with what looks like all of the electronics as well as vaccume stuff but it didnt't come with the ACTUAL switch. Now not that it matters but I am confused since Suncoast said it would, but I guess since the electronics will not be installed it is not a big deal.

What I am confused about is that the part numbers on the actual mufflers do not match the ones that Loren has posted. The part numbers that arrived and are stamped on the mufflers are:

996 111 238 02

996 111 237 02

First off does it matter that the numbers are not the same...it appears they have all of the vaccume stuff and larger pipes so it should be the same system. But what are the dimensions of the newer system with the larger pipes so I can make sure I have the right mufflers. Second which one is the left and right side ones...or does it not matter?

Thanks for the help.

That is not the muffler part number that is the part number for the support (hanger). The correct muffler part numbers are:

996 111 984 03 Left main muffler with flap and hose

996 111 985 03 Right main muffler with flap and hose

When installed, the sports exhaust system can only be distinguished by the Porsche trademark (see image below) the designation on the side of the mufflers.

Ok Loren, now I am especially confused :) I looked at the spot on the mufflers for the actual part number and it is listed as

996 111 984 01

996 111 985 01

That isn't the 00 or the 03 ending of either parts you have listed in the past. The date stamp on the muffler is July of 2003. So I remember you posted a while back at funcars (but I can't find the post) the difference in the dimensions of the tubes between the 00 and the 03 parts. Do you happen to remember off hand what those dimensions where so I can just make 100% sure I have the right system before I disassemble and reassemble the car :)

Thanks so much for the help!

There were three total versions of the PSE . The two versions of the later PSE had the larger bypass pipes. The earliest version with small pipes had part numbers: 996 111 984 00 and 996 111 985 00. This would be the small tube version that would only work on cars through MY01 (3.4 liter). The later version(s) with the larger tube (see photo below) will work on all MY cars -- just don't mix the mufflers (from the old and new versions).
