Sunroof: motor or cables?

I have read all the articles on sunroof woes, but I still have some questions.

Car: 2002 996 C2

Problem: one touch open not working, need to hold down switch and even then does not always want to close, slows down midway closing, generally seems slow

What I have done:

Cleaned the rails and tracks

Put some light lube on various surfaces (Silicone on the surfaces, light oil on the cables)

Disconnected the battery & retrained the sunroof -- which worked for one cycle

Opened the gear box and relubed with lubriplate (be careful, the gears and small spring will fall out)

Ran all this with a battery charger connected so as give full power to the motor

All to no avail.

Question:

Is this likely to be an issue with the motor wearing out? It free wheeled fine with the gears removed.

Or is there too much build up of internal friction with the cable mechanism? More lube and if so which?

Is there a way to diagnose this before I start spending $$ on parts and labor?

Yes, I did try to retrain. It worked for one cycle, and then decided to go stupid again. It really slows down half way closing, even when I hold down the deflector. Puzzled.

If it is binding, is there a procedure to further diagnose it and fix it? What is the proper lubrication to use for the tracks and for the "ribbons" that slide inside the tracks? My suspicion is that it's just dirty or has insufficient luberication.

As a Contributing Member you can view TSBs - and there is one on the sunroof. Start there.

Just go to the 996 section and search on sunroof.

Here are some additional questions:

Where does the one touch logic live? Is it part of the motor assembly? Are the limit sensors in the motor or else where?

Here is the reason why i am asking and what I have done so far:

o cleaned some more

o lubed the cables and tracks with a dry PTFE lubricant (found it Home Depot)

o it now closes and opens smoothly

o re trained per http://www.renntech.org/forums/topic/56-sunroof-not-closing-properly/

But, the unit forgets the one touch operation after one cycle.

Note that as part of the retraining, I had to follow both procedures, and at one limit the unit seems to be drawing a lot of current, dash lights dimmed.

Looked for TSBs but did not find anything relevant.

Hence the question above.

      The sunroof on my 2005 C2 S is struggling to open/close properly because (I think) the lubrication on the spiral cables is old and gummed up. I would like to remove the cables so that I can clean and re-lubricate them. Can anyone advise the easiest way to do this? I'm really hoping someone knows how to do this without having to remove the headlining and frame etc.

      I'm new at using forums so excuse me if I am not posting in the correct location but I really need some advice and assistance.
      I live just outside of Waco, TX and last Thursday as I was driving my son to school down I-35 we hear a loud boom, almost like a gun went off. My son looks up and see and hears the glass has broken on the sunroof (not the entire panaoramic just the front part). There were no cars around us, nothing hit us nor did we hit the sunroof from within, it basically self exploded like it was under immense pressure as the glass went up instead of down. Thankfully the suncreen netting caught some of the glass but there was damage to the body/paint on the rear section of the roof. I was warm in our garage 75 degrees +/- but the outside temps were low 40's high 30's that morning then the sun came out in force so not sure that had anything to do with it, cabin pressure, etc. Now here is the issue. I call Park Place Porsche in Dallas where we bought our last 3 Cayenne's they send a tow truck to pick it up that morning, do not hear from them until 7pm tonight and I am not happy. They are telling me since their service tech manager cannot figure out how this happened they will not warranty it....REALLY? So they can deny warranty because they can't explain it? Now I am set to call and talk to the service manager  and/or the head of the dealership because I'm not buying it, I've done my research over the weekend and this has become a big issue with sunroofs over the years and it's not an unknown thing (even though they are playing dumb). What can I do?

      1999 C4, which I've owned and enjoyed for 7 years, since 38K miles (now 159K miles).
      This evening the sliding sunroof was sliding open nicely. It only slides open if I hold down the button. But then a slight bit of rough road, at 35 mph caused it to hick-up a bit (clicking noises). And I probably briefly pushed the wrong button(s). Now it's wide open (slid all the way back, i.e. roof open to the sky). It will only shut about one inch, then stops. And repeated attempts make it close back up only result in opening back up that one inch. The tracks look clean, and were last lubricated 2 years ago. I don't use the sunroof much, other than the slight tilt up to vent.
      Suggestions on how to get it to close, and how to fix it?
      Manual close doesn't work -- can't get the supplied wrench to close it, because it's too hard to turn, and I don't want to force it, and goof something up further.
      I don't see any thread here that addresses this stuck open issue, and re-teaching in this circumstance doesn't seem to work (I tried it).
      I appreciate your suggestions and wisdom.

      For a little while now, my passenger side window
      has not been dropping down to allow the door to open/close. So I bought the
      microswitch and went to install it on saturday. Well, it wasn't until after I
      had the door panel off that I realized I don't have the triple square bit to
      remove the latch assembly NO worries,
      I'll put it back together and do the fix after I pick up the correct tool.


      So after the door panel is back together, I fire it up and notice:
      1-
      the power windows don't work
      2- sunroof doesn't work
      3- rear defroster
      doesn't work
      4- map lights don't work.

      Now, what would pulling the
      door panel off and putting it back on have ANYTHING to do with this list of
      failures? I checked the associated fuses in block D of the fuse box. They were
      all fine. Is there a relay connecting all of these features that may have
      failed?

      One other thing that I can't imagine would have an impact: When I
      went to remove the door panel, the wires that go to the little orange LED in the
      handle pulled out of the connector. I plan on picking up some wiring supplies at
      radioshack to fix this, but its only the handle LED...if that is somehow wired
      in series with the rest of those features...I would have to question Porsche's
      sense in that.

      Anyone know what might be going on here? Also, does
      anyone have a wiring diagram of this car?
