To all 996 owners with PSE, especially those with a 4S.
I think my 996 C4S exhaust behaves oddly. I think it's a fault but you might tell me it's normal behaviour. The problem is that I've always had this 'fault' on my car so I don't know if it's a fault or intentional behaviour. If you have the same car, perhaps you can shed some light on this.
When I start it, it's noisy and sounds great. It quiets down as it runs for the first 5 mins.
I have the PSE system and when I press the button you can audibly hear the exhaust note change - quieter when on and louder when off. Default is off so loud.
Here's the rub. Up to around 1500rpm it's got a good noise then it fades out to the point where it's so quiet it's like driving my partners Yaris. If I keep accelerating, when I get to around 3500rpm the exhaust suddenly gets loud again. I mean it's immediate - like someones flipping a switched marked loud. It sounds great.
It happens in 2nd and 3rd gears most noticeably and the PSE is in the 'off' position. If I have the PSE button on, then it's just quiet all the time and that works fine.
So why the silent spot?
I did read somewhere that German market cars might have had a system that turns on and off the PSE at certain speeds to prevent people driving round residential streets with a loud exhaust but information is thin and I don't think I was ever on UK cars.
I have also had a small go at checking vacuum pressure at idle on both sides of the Y piece in the engine bay but both hold good pressure. One side has only a microscopic leak but not enough to cause this kind of issue.
Doing the 80K mile service and have run into a problem.
The oil is changed, all filters refreshed, motor mounts replaced, brake fluid flushed, but plugs need to be replaced. Never pulled mufflers with PSE, and am at a loss on how to remove the stainless braided vacuum hoses that are crimped onto the valves. The heat shield (driver's side) is off, but without removing the muffler can only get to two of the three plugs.

So for my car , 996 C2 , 2003 with 70 TMiles and M030 suspension .
Im currently in process of purchasing several parts for suspension refresh , so to say .
Whole process came to a corner , left or right , from perspective of refreshing it since rear shock absorbers , i have planned to purchase are not available , anywhere .
At least not for reasonable/decent price
Plan is to refresh my stock M030 shocks , front and rear , where Bilstein B4 is standard which came with car .
Now , i have received front shocks but rear ones are not available and supplier does not know when they will be available .
I could not find them online , also , not a single supplier have them on stock, so only option , order them , pay them and wait for Bilstein to make them and deliver ..
Development of situation is is that my supplier have offered me Bilstein B8 as option , more or less same price as B4 .
Now, guys ,..
As part of refreshment i have bought several additional parts, which are part of suspension and fit B4 setup, for all 4 corners..
hexagon nut M 10
additional spring - bump stop
So to say rubbers and plastics ..
Springs i plan to keep , so no new springs planned ..
Will all those part be usable with B8 shocks , so plug and play .
What will be height difference , is B8 height adjustable or height is same as M030
WIll B8 shocks be delivered with installation manual
I have read recent article , it seams, came in right moment for me 🙂
So positive opinion on Bilstein B8 , which is ok , but im not worried about B8 on German Autobahn , my worry is as i wrote , will this be plug and play considering replacement of current ROW M030
or something needs to be bought specifically beside refreshment parts i have already bought .
Have some experience with wrenching around , front shock mount , Wheel bearing , basic service , sparks, mufflers , ignition Switch , etc ..
But few additional thingies and advises as additional knowledge is always welcomed .

I am looking to shave some weight off my 02 with factory PSE. My question is,will a fabspeed ( or any) muffler work with the factory PSE set up? Is it just a matter of removal of oem and replacement with aftermarket? plug and play as its been called? Thanks in advance
