Need advice on used G86/20 purchase?

Recommended Posts

I am in the process of sourcing a Boxster S transmission G86/20 for a project.

I have seen prices from used parts companies in the $2,000 range and pricing from rebuilders of $7,000.

I realize that a completely rebuilt unit with upgrades and all will be worth more, however, is there a "buyer beware" attitude about purchasing a used transmission from a reputable firm?

I have seen a 2001 unit available that has been sitting in the car for two years, they claim it shifts fine (with car stationary) and transmission fluid is clean, but sitting there for two years, is there anything I should be aware of?

The car was hit in the front and did not appear to be that bad from the photos? It has under 60,000 miles on it, if the information being provided is accurate.

Any input is appreciated.

Thanks,

Mike

When the hit happened with the car parked and in gear, it may be that the gearbox is damaged in the longer term, although it shifts fine at standstill and engine not running.

Thank you for your response,

It certainly appears from the photos of the damaged car that the front end came into contact with a pole. The shape of the front bumper has the appearance of folding or wrapping around what could have been a round structure of some type.

The images of the interior show the air bags deployed, both driver and passenger side.

My guess would be the car was moving at impact, couldn't say if the car was in gear but I would suspect it was?

Any other opinions?

Thanks,

Mike
