Steering wheel leather rewrap

The leather on my 1999 Boxster steering wheel is getting a bit worn. I'd like to get back to the grippy new steering wheel feel. I have a few questions:

- Is this something that can reasonably be done by a skilled DIYer?

- Is there a kit for this?

- Are there different options for thickness/leather type?

- How much should I expect to pay?

Beleive it or not, it is probably cheaper to replace the wheel than to pay for the labor to get it done RIGHT. And if you have a 4 spoke wheel, then now is the time to upgrade to the 3 spoke :)

Jump on eBay and just be patient, there are always great wheels for sale and can be had very reasonably.

With your year you should have the 4 spoke. Not worth the expense to recover. Many 996 and 986 people have changed to the 3 spoke. The 4 spoke was also used on the 993. So there are a lot of 4 spoke wheels out there. My friend switch to a 3 spoke and got someting like $50 on ebay for his 4 spoke with the air bag. We have 5 local owners I know of that switched to 3 spoke wheels. I switched as well.

I'm undecided about the 3-spoke. I actually like the 4-spoke. I've driven with both (in two different cars) many times. I was thinking this would be a $50-100 venture. How much does a new 3-spoke go for?

You can get them on eBay for a couple hundred bucks.

In case anyone was wondering, this OEM supplier of leather products for Porsche seems to have what I want (recover kit) for just over $70.
