Upgrade Sound System in 1998 Boxster 986

Recommended Posts

I've recently purchased a 1998 Porsche Boxster 986 and I find it a great drive however the stereo is a little lacking with only the speakers in the dash. I've upgrade the stereo but I would like to add additional speakers in both doors and in the rear speaker shelf. Forgive my ignorance but this is my first Porsche and all this is quite new to me.

Firstly, with the door speakers, can anyone recommend the best option for speakers that would fit in the door? Also does Porsche offer a grill for these speakers or should I just use what's provided by the speaker?

Secondly, I recently purchased a rear storage box to install the rear speaker kit. Can anyone recommend the speakers for this as well as the centre sub-woofer?

Lastly, would it be worthwhile to purchase an Amp or would this just be overkill?

Many thanks in advance.

I have the same questions as Robert and mainly looking for any suggestions on speakers that anyone has installed that they really like.   I would love any assistance.

Ivanover, Please do a search for system upgrade and there are some very good write ups covering the subject. it all depends on how far you want to go and how much you want to tear in to the the car.

My 02 Boxster does not have electronics in it. So I have been locking and unlocking the car manually. Is there a way I can replace the elctronics inside key or buy a new key that matches with the Car. Please point me in right direction.

While researching another problem with my Boxster, I noticed a company is advertising an oil fed intermediate shaft bearing kit, which seems to use a modified cover and a hose to feed oil to the intermediate shaft bearing..
      the kit is here..
Has anyone installed it or know if it is any good?
My old 986 Boxster had an upgraded IMS bearing installed when I bought the car, and I thought it was a worthwhile thing to do.. But was told the 987 needed an engine teardown to replace the bearing.. This kit seems to just feed engine oil into the bearing, which from what I have read would solve the problems with failure.. But really.. should this kit do the trick?

Just finished (January 2014) an audio upgrade to a '99 C4 Cab. Thought I would document it for future reference.

I have recently heard that there is an upgrade tiptronic gearbox oil/fluid available in the market which should give a better response for the Tip box. Does this really work? Have anyone tried before?
I am interested to learn as I have realized that the tip at high revs seems not responding as good when compares to mid to low range revs.

Recently I have been thinking of an exhaust system upgrade for my 2005 997 C2S which I have been driving for quite some time. Can any of you guy help by suggestion on this issue? My 997 is basically standard apart from a set of BBS forged wheels. I am hunting for something that product nicer sound plus hopefully better flow and performance. Any experience and suggestions on where to shop, please reply.
