Turbo Lag

I have a 2004 996tt with X-50, headers, 200 cell cats, free flow exhaust, BMC air filter and silicone intercooler hoses. Can any suggest a way to decrease turbo lag? Just wrote to FVD re their software helping and they indicated it would not help the lag. The car only has 10,000 miles on the clock.

What specifically do you mean by "turbo lag". My entry into the Porsche world is pretty recent, starting with the 996. But my understanding is that turbo lag was more of a thing of the past. For example, my 996TT never really needed much time to spool the turbos and get power. As soon as you step on the gas, it gets violent extremely quick. Do you have ECU tunes on the car? Or are the only mods you have what you stated? The 996TT (x50 especially) has tons of power and you should not be experiencing much lag compared to other turbo engines.

Flashing the ECU with a better tune will help the lag, but realize the X50 has bigger turbos (K24s) vs. the standard TT which has K16s. If you really want to get rid of the lag, get hybrid turbos.

The K24's are a little bigger than the K16's and take a little more time to spool, will be hard to get around physics. Since the engine is more or less an air pump, the trick is to get more air through it spinning the turbos more, Porsche has done a good job with the motor in regards to efficiency,however there are a few things you can do to open the intake and exhaust more, one of the things we did is port match the oem headers, dont waste your time or money on aftermarket, the oem ones are very good, port matching will help some. If you are using a factory exhaust, I would recommend a freer flowing exhaust such as Europipe, 911 tuning and protomotive, a little expensive but will definitely open up the airlfow and sounds fantastic. Porting the heads and some valve work will probably give you the biggest gains but also keep your car down the longest and maybe cost prohibitive pending what you want to do, all the above will do amazing things.

Very good points about the larger K24s on the X50.

Just my opinion, but I would not use an ECU tune to try to address this.

Get K16/24 hybrid or K16 billet with a good tune. These are turbos are spooling up very fast!
