996 C4S - prepping for strut bearing change. A few questions

Recommended Posts

Hey guys,

I am getting the creaking/binding noise from front suspension when stationary and turning the steering. No noise over bumps etc. and I have decided to replace the front strut bearings to eliminate one possible cause.

Question - I am reading conflicting information on the process on the C4S. One thread says you need to remove the front half shafts to make room for the struts to come out of the wheel well. HEre:

Another says that is not necessary. HEre:

Can someone tell me which one might be more accurate? Also, does anyone have the accurate part numbers for a 2003 C4S? I have PSS10s on there now, so not sure if that makes a difference or if I just need the OEM strut bearing still.

Please advice! Thanks.

I replaced both front shock mounts and greased the bearings several weeks ago in My 2001 C4.  My creaking was due to the bushings in the shock mounts/camber plate being shot.  I disconnected the font drive shafts from the front differential joint. You need to remove the front tray to see where they connect.  There are six allen headed bolts to hold drive shaft on. Any air ratchet made this easier.  Also, disconnecting the drop links form the sway bar helps everything drop clear and the strut swings out easily.

Where did you get the shock mounts? I think I need to change them too on my C4.  I should of change them out when I upgrade to M30...
