Horn not working on steering wheel

Recommended Posts

I have a 2001 996 C2.   When I press on the center of the steering to sound the horn, I don't have any sound.   When I lock the doors using my keyless entry, there is a horn sound indicating that the doors are locked so I know that the horn works.   Any idea why it's not working with the steering wheel and how to fix this?   Thanks.

:welcome:

You have two separate problems.

1. If your horn does not sound when pressing the airbag edges then you may have a blown fuse (B3) or two bad horns. Yes, two bad horns happens. They are not very good horns.

2. The horn you hear when locking the car means that you have an alarm fault - a zone is open. (There is no option on the 996 for a horn beep when locking.)

From one Gilligan to another, I also have a 2001, a Cab, and noticed your last name. Not many Gilligan's around with Porsche's. If you have time, send me a PM. I'm interested to know from which branch of the Gilligan clan you may be. Thanks.

Are there different horns for the alarm and the steering wheel? I think what the OP meant was that it seems that the horns themselves don't seem to be at fault, as they're working for the alarm ( I think they both use the same horn(s) no? ). In any case, it seems to me that either A) the steering wheel horn contacts are dirty or (B) disconnected

Yes.

There are two horns for traffic located behind the front bumper.

And there is an alarm horn located near the battery (in the front trunk) - this is the one that sounds when an alarm zone is open or failed.

Hey guys.   Thanks for the responses.   So the relay and the fuse are good.    I think the problem is with the horns being bad.    I ordered replacements from pelican parts and it looks like a pretty easy DIY based on this video:

I still need to figure out what's causing the alarm beep though...

You might find that either the passenger glove box or the central glove box is not closing properly and making contact. Open and close them a few times and even slam them shut. If they are used infrequently the contacts might be dirty and some action might free them up.
