How to take apart GT3 BBS 2 piece rims

Recommended Posts

Hi All, I have recently purchased a set of rims (picture attached). From what I know these are BBS 2 piece rims available on the GT3 and optional on the 986 Boxster.  I would like to clean them up a little and so want to take them apart to polish the lip. the black centers are in great shape.  If I remove the 12pt star bolts on the outer part of the rim should the center come off?  I got the bolts off but the center black part wont budge. I am considering some PB Blaster to loosen it up. I dont want to damage the wheels. I am looking for advice/experiences with these wheels. yes i know they will be a PITA to clean on a regular basis.

IMHO this is a job for a professional wheel shop.

Even after you get them off for cleaning and perhaps painting it is the re-assembly and proper torque and proper torque sequence that is of the utmost importance.

Plus you will want the wheel checked for trueness balance.

Yes, Loren. But cannot find a shop near me. Maybe when the PCA starts meeting in RI someone there can recommend a shop.

Most of the good shops I know are on the West Coast - so perhaps a member here can recommend a good wheel repair shop on the East Coast.

I actually contacted BBS and got a response quickly. I have taken apart 1 wheel and will start polishing it up this weekend.
