I am intrigued. Attached is a photograph of an oil leak from the front of the engine of my 2010 Boxster S. The pics show the front upper and lower oil pan just below the front engine mount when the leak was at its worst. Of course this is the 3.4 DFI engine, the car is pristine and has only covered 33,000 kms.
The history is that the leak was diagnosed as a faulty AOS at the last service a month ago and the AOS was changed. But the leak persisted, not a lot, occasionally a spot on the garage floor but not always. Looking from above and from behind the front seats the engine appeared to be completely dry above the upper oil pan. Also the PDK had become very sluggish and unpredictable when taking off from a standstill but otherwise the car appears to run fine.
When I reported back to the dealer they advised that both problems were caused by the AOS. They said that the new AOS was a faulty part and happily agreed to replace at no cost. This has now been done and after a hot 250 km run the leak has stopped but there is still some oil residue around the lower pan. But nothing like in the attached picture. The dealer advises that this is oil leaking from the intakes left from the bad AOS and that it will clear over time.
Miraculously the PDK is back to perfection so I guess the dealer knows his stuff. But does this make any sense?

I'd been noticing infrequent leaks - looks like oil but doesn't seem as thick or viscous, from the rear suspension area of the driver's side.
I checked the oil levels on both the dash indicator (varies between at the MAX level to mid-way between MAX and MIN levels) and the dipstick which is higher than mid-way.
I'm not so sure if this is really oil but is brownish and smells like a mixture of dirt and water.
I peeked under the car and have attached photos of the leaky area and it's cleaner sibling on the opposite end on the passenger's side rear suspension.
1) What is this part that is leaking? Is that really oil?
2) Can this leak be plugged or should the part be replaced?
3) If it is the struts, time to swap the rears out too? I'm looking at the fronts soon, so wondering if it is time to replace all 4?

Engine has not been started for 4 months. Actually it has been on a huge container for 2+ months and just few weeks ago I got the time to start working with my car again.
Just before taking these pictures, note that I did wash my engine and transmission while they were still connected to each other, that might explain the glossy oil spots near my IMS (or not).
Four months ago, underneath the car it looked that I get a tiny amount of oil after I drive around 500 miles, sometimes even a drop of oil to my garage floor if I drive a lot more. The drop comes right to the spot which usually indicates RMS/IMS leak. Then again, my AOS has been spitting lots of oil out from the connectors and the drop might originate from there too, impossible to say as front left side of the engine near AOS was so full of oil and gunk.
I've changed my oil now twice, both the oil and filter ripped open has looked really really clean but this is based solely on human eye :-)
I'd like to get a few second opinions to my questions, hopefully this thread is usefull to others too.
1) How does my RMS / IMS look in general?
I'd say the leak is reasonably small, most gunk originates from clutch, would you feel the same?
2) Would you change my RMS or just leave it be?
It has already been changed once at some point.
3) What exactly seems to be leaking here?
To me it seems to be the IMS, but strangely enough the bottom part right below the IMS cover was completely clean (just zoom the images and remember that I washed my tranny and engine just before separating them).
4) Which bolts would you change while doing the IMS?
Looking at the pictures, many change bolt numbers 4, 5, 6 and 7, how about you?
5) Curiosity question, what parts are not original?
My RMS must be new as the part number is 997.101.212.00. IMS looks old, part number K.99602401 (?). Also would you also feel that many of these bolts have been changed as they look past year 2004 bolts, right?
PS. I have a new RMS, LN bearing + tools waiting for the installation..

I'm looking to buy a Boxster S (02-03) and have found one fairly cheap 2002. The car has previously been in an accident of some kind, but has been repaired properly. A got a car inspection performed and the following issues were outlined:
1. Oil leak coming from both rocker covers (fairly minor leak)
2. Oil leak coming from centre of engine block area (fairly minor leak)
3. Outter drive shaft boot split (I've read this is fairly common, and needs replacing)
4. Some knocking noise in front and rear suspension during test drive
The inspector said he thought the car was actually in pretty condition. And I've driven the car and it drives well and looks to be in fairly good condition.
(1) The car has been garaged and not driven for two years prior to the inspection, which I thought may have led to the drying out of the rocker engine gaskets, and hence oil leaks.
(2) I'm fairly worried about centre of engine block leak, as nothing is cheap to rectify on a Boxsters engine from what I've read in these forums. And I haven't found any mention of this issue in the forums.
(4) I think the inspector was being overly fussy with this, as it looks like the car has the original suspension etc. Thoughts?
As the car is selling for a responbly good price, I wanted to get some feedback as to whether I should be alarmed at the issues above and run a mile, or consider purchasing. And on purchasing whether these need immediate attention.
