I think i'm screwed...Broken Security Lug Bolt Key

Hello- any input appreciated. The security (Lock) Lug Bolt addapter for my 996 Targa cracked and broke.  So now half the car with winter tires and half with summer.  Has anyone had this problem?  Remedy?  Am i going to have to buy new lug bolts for the entire vehicle? My inde can get the existing lugs off (ruining them in the process). What to do?  Can i just purchase the 4 locking lugs and new key independently.  Pelican Parts see nothing in their parts list.

A dealer, or well equipped Indy, should have the master key set and can also get you a replacement key for your current lugs.

You can buy a replacement key - just copy the code on your broken key and take that to the dealer.

If you do not have the key a good dealer will try all of their keys until they find the correct one and then order you a replacement.

 

Always good advice to write your wheel key code down and keep it for just this occasion.

thanks gents.  I have the key but dont see a number on it.  looking in the manual and paperwork now.  think i am going to remove the locking nuts period....and will quit overtourquing the lugs as well...which should help.  Air gun gets too tight before i put the torque wrench on it.  I think i need a torque stick for the air gun will help.

That happened to me in a middle of my winter tire change several years ago.  Took it to a dealer and they tried 20 some keys and found the one I needed.  They then ordered it and several days later I was back in business. Set your air gun down a few notches and always finish with a manual torque wrench at 96 fts/lbs for dry bolts (no anti-seize, a little less if you use it), tighten in a star pattern with the key lug being the last one tightened and the first on loosened.

I've seen the paper in the lug socket method work, simply put newspaper in the socket, knock it on with a hammer, then remove - I had some dodgy mates when I was younger who used to get around locking wheel nuts this way...

The newspaper makes the socket grip the lug nut....
