2006 Cayman S Check Engine Light

I just picked up my new/used 2006 Cayman S two days ago. I filled it up with gas today (did two days ago as well) and about 7-10 miles later the Check Engine Light came on. Shortly after that the Central Warning Light (red exclamation mark next to the CEL light) came on, and the info message said "Check Engine". Guess that was obvious.

I went to two AutoZone stores and they hooked up the CS to their OBD2 (pardon me, but I am new to Porsche and all this stuff) scanner. Both times they thought the device registered something, but when they connected the device to their computer in the store there were No Fault Codes found.

I drove by the Porsche dealer to see if they could find a code, but being Christmas eve they were already closed.

The car had a pre-purchase inspection done at a Porsche dealer, and they did find and repair a fault code, having to do with some charcoal gas vent / canister (evap). That was repaired and the car checked out with no codes.

Can anybody comment on this? Would it be possible to trigger the CEL without the car registering and storing a code? Do the AutoZone OBD2 scanners (Innova was the brand) work on a Porsche (I heard there are primary and extended codes (car specific))? Could the car be issuing a special Porsche code that is not even able to be recorded by the OBD2 scanner?

I appreciate any help and suggestions you can provide. So far my Christmas present is not feeling like a good one.

Check the gas cap and see if the o-ring has cracks on it and make sure the cap is tight. I think it's likely the autozone scanner not up to task. If the CEL is on, a generic scanner should be able to retrieve some codes.

It's best to bring it to the dealer who repaired the evap issue. All repair done by dealer should have warranty. They could also retrieve more codes than a gemeric scanner can.

Thanks!  I did as you suggested when I got home.  The cap o-ring looks like new.  I also wiped the o-ring and the gas tank where the o-ring is seated to ensure there was no dampness, oil, etc. that would impact the seal.  The CEL light is still on, so I guess the dealer has to check it and reset the CEL.

 

Unfortunately the dealer that did the repair is 160 miles away, but he said the work would be warranted by another dealer (I presume at their cost).

Maybe you can try a different autozone store to get it read again. That way, you have some idea what you are dealing with before you bring it to a new dealer. I can magine warranty someone else's work can be tricky.

I've found that owning a Durametric is the second best investment to owning the car itself. It certainly avoids a great deal of inconvenience and potentially expensive guess work. There was a used one for sale on here a couple of weeks ago IIRC.

 

It might be an idea.

I found the solution, at least for me.  We were having really wet weather in Atlanta, so I bought a can of gas dryer at AutoZone, put it in, and within 10 miles the light turned off.

 

I've also read that certain brands don't work well in a Porsche.  My experience was with BP, so I am not inclined to buy that brand again.  I'll stick with Shell, which the former owner was using.

      Several people have told me that the 996 Dual Sender Oil Pressure Switch/Sensor will directly replace the 987-1 Oil Pressure Switch. Can you please confirm this and provide the part number. I would guess it is 996-606-203-03 but, I would like to be sure.
       
      Additionally, if I am running an AIM dash, should I run the pressure lead to the switch input on the ECU and get the pressure data from the CAN bus or, just leave the switch lead attached and run the pressure lead straight to an analog I/O on the AIM dash.

      Hey everyone, i own a 2010 porsche Boxter 2.9L with the PDK transmission.. yesterday after leaving the car for a 4 days i started it and went for a drive.. when i turned it on again, i got a warning message “emergency transmission run” and the car became very jerky through gearshifts and wouldnt accelerate properly.. after turning it on and off the message went away and it drove just fine but then it kept re-appearing mid drives and becomes very jerky and clunky...ive noticed since i had the car that the gearbox was sometimes clunky or would make a noise when changing gear but the dealership said that was fine and normal since its a PDK, the car is at 59,000km so its time for a transmission fluid change... could this be a low voltage problem, or transmission fluid? The reverse gear works just fine.. has this happened to any other owners?

      CEL went off over the weekend, Durametric showed a P2190 code.
      Car is a 2007 C4S coupe w/ Tip at 69,000 miles. Basically bone stock, serviced at the dealer.
       
      After checking with Durametric I opened the hood and noticed that the hose clamp connecting the wide Y hose from the airbox onto the intake manifold came loose. So I though there is a vacuum leak, took off the airbox, replaced the airfilter, cleaned the MAF. noticed a few ml of oil-like fluid inside the throttle body just at the level of the butterfly flap; so I cleaned that up. Tightened oil fill and gas caps. Reconnected everything, cleared the code but now it came back a day later. I have an appointment with the dealer in a few days. 

      Any suggestions what I can do to maybe fix this on my own? Many thanks

      I have 2000 Porsche Boxster S that is misfiring on nearly every cylinder. It started with symptoms of a bad MAF; typical sluggish on take off, CEL light with the corresponding code. I would disconnect the wiring from the MAF and it would clear up. I cleaned the MAF and plenum and it ran perfectly for about a day. Ordered a new MAF. By before I had a chance to put the new one in I got a flashing CEL and a massive loss of power. Put in the new MAF. It cleared up some idle issues but the loss of power and flashing CEL is still there. The codes show random misfire and misfire on 2,3,4,5, and 6. I've also changed the spark plugs but it has had no effect.

      I accidentally didn't tighten my gas cap after refueling and my check engine light came on. I drove it to a nearby Autozone and the code came back that it  was the gas cap. I've been driving the car for the last 3 days and topped off with good premium gas but the light is still on. I contacted a Porsche dealer who advised that it will rest. The question is does anyone know how long it normally takes for the light to disappear? Ty
