Reversing lights

Hi all 

my reverse lights stay on in neutral and sometimes drive on my tiptronic 996 1999

I am lead to believe the switch is under the Centre console but having removed it I can’t see it, also someone has cut some wires, see pics
This is a 1999, could it be under the car?  I did hear prefacelift 996’s could possibly under the car, not sure what the two cut wires are about either!

Hiya thanks for reply, yes mine is a tiptronic but there’s no loom connector to attach to switch 

see pic (1) from Internet, not my car, I’ve circled connector, I don’t have this 

pic 2 is my car, might have to look underneath

While someone has obviously butchered the car for some reason, you should be able to either recreate the harness, or get one from a breakers yard to put the car back together correctly.

I’ve read that early 996’s had the switch on the gearbox, see pic 

although I could be wrong, just something I’ve read about ZF tiptronic gearboxes, I shall keep digging

That is the neutral safety switch; the reverse light switch is under the console as pictured above.

So the reverse lights stay on, sometimes even while in drive.  It looks to me like it is a simple on/off switch controlled by the movement of the shift lever against the roller and microswitch.  How do you know it is not the microswitch that is bad?  You could pull the wire connectors and test the switch for on/off easily with an ohm meter, or test for on/off voltage with a volt meter.  Simple enough test to see if maybe the switch is faulty.

On 3.4 Tiptronics the reversing lights are controlled by the multifunction switch on the side of the ZF gearbox.  Facelift 3.6s use a Mercedes box, and the reversing light switch is on the bottom of the selector lever.

Thanks, I heard this was the case but wasn’t 100% as have had different opinions on this subject!
