Steering locked

Recommended Posts

I have a 2004 boxster S 6 speed manual. My daughter parked it for track practice and said she got through and tried to start it and key turned all the way around " don't know how" and wheel locked. So when i got there wheel was locked and key was locked in off postion. I had a ignition switch from my other project boxster and pluged it in and started car with screwdriver and backed it straight on to a trailer. I have taken the switch off the back of the locking mechanism and still key will not turn and steering wheel is locked. Can't remove key cylinder nor whole lock mechanism because its locked. How can i remove a locked steering lock mechanism. I saw one post that some one used a dremal to cut a slot by the pin that locks it in the steering column but i would rather destroy the bad lock mechanism and not my steering column. Please any advice would be greatly appreciated. We had some issues with steering lock prior but were always able to get it to free up but not this time.

Have you attempted to "force" the steering wheel to one side or the other of the lock-stop? If there's any "off center" of the steering wheel it will be very difficult to unlock. It's either this simple, or gonna be very difficult.

I always tell valets to make sure steering wheel is straight ahead when they park the car.

I got back from vacation and finally fixed the problem. The key cyclinder had failed. I had to break it out of the steering lock mechanism and the remove the mechanism. Thankfully i had a lock mechanism and cylinder from a parts car i had bought security module for my 2001 and had not used lock set.
