Wind Deflector Install

Guys,

Really appreciate the info in this string, like most of you my Box didnt come with the factory fitted windstopper (why are people so tight!!) hey ho, I was quoted £280 plus VAT (20%) for fitting. Following the instructions below it took me 15 mins and yes I have a new rivet gun too!!

986 install (1999 2.5)

Firstly thanks very much guys for all the help above, me and a friend managed to do the job above on my 986 in about 30 mins (dealer said they block out 1 1/2 hours).

- found a deflector on ebay (with the levers attached) - £50

- found the mesh grilles on ebay - £50

- bought a fitting kit from the dealer - £16 (6 rivets, 3 brackets)

Prized off the trim (3) by hand (tight but no broken clips), riveted the centre bracket onto the padding.

Found 1 hole each side on the rollbar hoops pre-drilled so riveted the brackets on using just one rivet per bracket (tried drilling a 2nd hole on each but gave up as realised I may be there some time!). When fitting the L & R brackets we fitted the centre trim and sat the deflector in place so were able to line everything up just as a check.

Popped the trim back on and pretty much job done!

Thanks to all the contributors above. I have just bought a Porsche 987 and as well no wind deflector. Have sourced screen and headrest inserts in internet but as all no fittings on car. Porsche want £240 plus VAT and £30.01 plus vat for the kit. I'm keen to try myself after reading the posts. Can anyone tell me where to get the fixing kit for £16 as did one of the chaps. That may be a mega bargin but anything less than £47 would be great. Thanks. DP

Thanks to everyone for posting this info. I have a 2011 Boxster S (987) that didn't come with the wind screen. After paying $600 for the factory parts, the dealer wanted $340 to install it. They said it took precise measurements and suggested that I don't try it myself. Well after reading your posts, my Boxster was exactly like the pictures you all posted. I had to really pull on the trim pieces, but they came off ok and the mounting holes were there as you all mentioned. It took me less than an hour to install the windscreen myself. It only cost me $20 for the rivet gun.

I am trying to find the wind deflector itself. The car I just bought has the attachments at the top of the hoops and at the base of the area between the hoops, but the window itself is missing. It is AMAZING how much people want for a simple window and holder.

My 2000 Boxster S came without the wind deflector, but I have managed to buy one from UK, I noticed one of the clips on the rollbar was broken and the middle clip too, so bought a replacement fitting kit also from UK. Problem now: how will I remove the old broken bits with the rivets and leave holes vacant for new rivets?

I'm also worried about removing the padding(female thing, don't want to damage my baby) I have a rivet gun, but should I just take the car into the local mechanics and get them to do it? or do I trust it to my hubby? Also, how do I remove the padding without damaging the little plastic bushing things as there were no replacements with my fixing kit.

I suggest using a drill to carefully remove the heads of the rivets on the broken clips.

To remove the padding, I just pulled them off with my fingers. Others have used plastic upholstery tools to pry off the padding. The plastic bushings will either stay in the rollbar (no problem) or pull out with the padding. If this the case, just unscrew the bushing from the stud on the padding and reset the bushing back into the hole in the rollbar.

Replaced one of the broken clips on my 02 986 today. Really easy once the padding is off. That took some work. My trim removal tool wasn't enough and I had to use a pry bar.

I thought I would revive this thread in support of the ease of installation. Earlier in this thread someone mentioned "test fitting", and that's what I did. To make the test easier, I riveted the lower support to the center padding and put it in position w/o the nylon fasteners. I hope this helps the next to do this effective, and simple install.

Also easily installed the factory kit recently purchased from Suncoast.   

The pre-drilled holes make all the difference - almost can't go wrong.    

 

Careful to line up the bolts correctly before pushing the pads back on....easy to bend one of the screws.
