Complete rebuild and Engine swap

Himall.

Nice to meet you all and thank you for letting me join you all,

I got a 1999 986 in very bad condition, blown motor, bad paint and terrible interior.

This is all well and good as its my project car,

I own my own repair shop so this is nothing new to me with O/H cars but the Porsche is.

To start i need to get a new engine and wonder what your experience idea would be what my best move is> replace with the original  2.5L or is one of the other engine a possible fit open to any suggestions'

With the price of decent running older boxsters I'm not sure it makes any sense to do anything but parting out the one you have. Now if the exterior and interior were pristine and all it was was a motor swap, it makes sense. But with that much needed I can see you investing too much in that chassis.

Going to a different engine means needing much more than just swapping an engine. Electrical differences. Axle and transmission differences.

And finding one in good shape with low miles is getting more difficult.

Mike has a valid point. With all that’s needed it’s going to add up fairly quick and at the end could probably buy another newer model at the end price.

Basically comes down to what your budget is? I’m going through a used replacement motor currently on mine and was debating a 3.4L but with all the added costs and tinkering I opt for another 2.5L. You could drop a 2.7L but heard it’s really not worth it. Any Boxster up to 02 can work.

how bad is the motor?
