2004 exhaust on 2000 Boxster S

Recommended Posts

I have just purchased a 2000 boxster S. Great car but it sounds like a Buick on the freeway. My BMW 325I always lets you know that it has an engine.

I understand that an 03/04 exhaust will sound better. I am considering a near new '04 (non S) muffler.

It does not include the exhaust tip.

Questions:

Will the newer muffler sound better?

Any recommendations for a moderately priced S type exhaust tip?

Is the S and nonS muffler the same otherwise?

Will it fit without modification?

And finally, what aftermarket exhaust would be recommended? I do not want one that drones when the top is up. I listen to the stereo sometimes.

(I also have a supercharged Miata with Jackson Racing headers and exhaust. It is too loud with the top up)

Thanks

why not go with the Porsche Sport Exhaust? if droning is bothersome yet you like the loud top end then it may be perfect

I'd suggest against most aftermarket mufflers if droning noise can be bothersome, with my SuperSprint I got a headache driving to work and back but if I were only driving it on weekends I probably would have kept it, it did sound awesome above 3k but in traffic it was deadly

of course if you want to try one I've got one that I'd let go cheap (tips too) :P

If the 2003/4 muffler sounds different than 1997-2002 then I can't hear the difference.

The only difference between the base and S mufflers is the number of tips.

In 2003/4 Porsche went to a bolt on tip. That way Porsche only had to stock 1 muffler for the base and S.

A local 2003 S owner put on the chrome "sport tip" so he has the original S tip if he has not sold it since I last saw him. I can give you the contact info if you are interested in his tip. But I think you would be wasting money by putting on a 2003/4 muffler.

i'm suprised to hear you say there is no difference since most of the road tests of the 03 Boxster comment on the improved exhaust sound. Perhaps it's very subtile.

Yes, I'd be interested in contacting your friend to see if his original 03 S tip is available.

The PSE is very expensive, isn't it?

Are you still intrested in selling the supersprint? I might be interested for my 2001 2.7?

Please let me know

I upgrade my 2002 Boxster non-s exhaust system with a 2003 Boxster S factory system, it looks very nice and I look it a lot, I am not sure about the sound differnet, but it definately worth for my upgrade, it cost me $250 to purchase the exhaust from eBay and $200 for installation. The is no modification done. If you are going to upgrade the exhaust to Boxster S or sport system, you should also considering to have the rear diffuser, it match perfectly. For my upgrade, there is no modification at all, just plug and play
