engine blown, opinions, views, help wanted

Kelvin, at least before blowing your engine you had some few times of glory cruising at 270!

When I blown it, I was stopped at the traffic light... the noise was exactly tha same you described (I thought to an OM Leoncino - a '50-'60 italian small truck)

This is my story http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4501&hl=

(I don't know if the link works but in case you can search here for the title of the 3D "another (?) 996 3.4 engine broken..., is normal that a serviced 67.000 Km...".

At last I've spent 11.000 euro for engine, clutch and flywheel replacement.

Since, due to the low mileage, I claimed for extra warranty, after 6 months I had back 1K from Porsche as 30% of the only replacement engine list price (5870€ + VAT).

The "funny" think (it would be very funny to see how this would be considered in a trial...) is that the "opening the engine for failure search" - must for claiming the warranty - costed me 1K.... :censored:

I'm very very very nauseated from Porsche...

i understand your "nauseation" only too well.....i think there are a lot of people out there who dont have a warranty and are now rather anxious about if their engines are gonna hold out or not...bad news when you think of the reputation porsche have got..it seems to me as if they are just sitting back on a under false pretences earned reputation in their (porsche designed?) office chairs while the porsche shares are going up and up and not spending enough of the millions that they earn helping owners of blown low milleage and correctly maintained engines that bought the product "porsche" thinking that they were buying an engineering masterpiece...i have even heard of problems occuring with the 997! dont they care at all?

anyhow...i still love the car (isnt that strange?)..lets enjoy our cars so long as they are under warranty...im gonna give my engine hell!!!! :drive:

I have been reading all of the posts about engine failure and it scares the hell out of me!!

I have a 99 C2 that I bought 2 years ago with 45k mils on it. It now has 58k. I have never had one single problem with it. Im the third owner. Looking through the records the car has never had a problem of any kind mechanically. I've changed the oil and that's it. :clapping:

Im about to do the 60k maintainance. Any tips about things that should be checked??? (besides the usual 60k items).

I have had BMW's and BENZ's in the past and they were nothing but headaches and breakdowns.

My Porsche has been a real treat to own. I drive it hard but dont beat it up.

I'm so sorry that you guys have these horror stories and have taken such a financial beating.

Any advice to look for any suspicious engine problems would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and good luck with your new engines!!!

I had my 60,000 mile maintenance done less than 10,000 miles before my engine failure. I’m still not sure what failed and let the oil and coolant intermix and I probably never will since it would cost another $2,000 to have the engine broken down to find out. The service tech said the leak down test points to a cracked head or blown head gasket though it could be a failed cylinder sleeve or corroded coolant passages in the head. According to the service manager no test preformed during the 60,000 mile major maintenance would have detected the problem.

Don’t sweat it, it won’t help so drive it like you stole it. :drive:

Found oil in the coolant. Driving very slowly. Hope my extended warranty covers this...

What are the chances of getting a list of everyone who had to replace the engine on these 1999-2000 996's? Should be a big club with annual meetings or something. Maybe we could invite the chief Porsche engineer to give a presenation on how this is not Porsche's problem. I'm guessing they won't want to, but if they don't, we might get enough club members together with some sympathetic dealers, mechanics, and owners who have enough clout to maybe get Porsche to at least admit there is a problem.

Do you think they have a few hundred engines in this country they can ship out when the oil appears in the coolant? Anyhoo... I'll keep reading and see what happens when the engine blows. I really don't have a choice, do I?

I have oil in the coolant as well. Just discovered by the Porsche Dealer - 70,000 on a 2000 C4 Tip. So, my question is....how many miles do you get before the engine flys apart in a million pieces....or just overheats due to radiator blockage????

Oil in the coolant could just be the oil cooler gone bad.
