CD Changer Installation on MY2003 C2

Recommended Posts

UPDATE....

I finally got my 6 CD changer installed today. I guess it's not as easy as it seems.

The dealer quoted me 2 hours...ended up taking them almost 8 hours. I am not sure why it is so hard to install. The tech said that there are no directions and the wiring diagrams are not clear.

Poursha - When Carlsen installed your Cd player were you able to see the two orange FO cables and the taped wires going to the changer, as you look at the bottom of the player?

You can see them on mine. I think that the tech should have used some flex plastic cover to hide the orange FO cables and the hard wiring.

Bottom line...it works!

They wrapped the electrical wires and the 2 orange FO cables in a cloth tape (reminds me of what I used to use on my hockey sticks :D )--nice, neat job. You have to look pretty closely to notice them.

Where did you have it installed?

Poursha,

I went to Neighbon Porsche in Oakland. The shop called Carlsen, and Carlsen told Neighbon that they have only done 1 MOST installation, and it took them 5 hours.

That installation must have been yours? My dealer wasn't too happy, but they honored the 2 hour quote.

Thanks for all your help! Now, I can groove to even more tunes than before :clapping:

Carlsen told me they had done a bunch of the CD changer installs on MOST cars. When I first called Carlsen they quoted me $350, and when I made the appointment, they said 3.5 hours (@$135/hour) but when I reminded them of the $350 they honored it. You got a deal with 2 hours. I don't think my car was at Carlsen for 5 hours, so I don't know what Neighbon is referring to.

The tech said that there are no directions and the wiring diagrams are not clear.

I have already gone through this with everyone at my local dealer who will listen to me. They sell the changer for a retrofit install and have no instructions. Still cannot get my hands on the TSBs to see if they are any help.

That is why I want to have a car with the changer already installed to compare when we put in Raman's changer. We will just copy what we see. Then film it. No way could it take 8 hours to hook up a few fiber optic cables and an electrical cable unless you are doing it by trial and error for the first time.

Below are the instructions that came from the Porsche Tech-Line. Some of the words are outside the margins of the fax, but I can make out most of it. I don't know if this tells us anything that we didn't know, but this is what they sent the dealer to use. I haven't tried installing mine again, but I will within a week or so. I'll let you all know my success rate.

From the Tech-Line:

On a Boxster and 996 there is a plug connection behind the brake booster for the fiber optic line. It is at this point that you will run one line to the cd-changer, out of the changer to the amp, and out of the amp to the connection behind the booster. Leave the existing optic line in place and zip tie the new one to it to save time. You need to order the correct optical line depending on the components installed in the vehicle. The optical lines can be found in PET/Boxster/Main group 09/sub group 02/ illustration ???902-50. ( I can't make out all of the numbers, but Loren has posted this info.)

The wiring is fairly easy. Three wires...one power, one ground, and a wake up diagnosis. I would run the power and the ground to the fuse box. If your vehicle has an amplifier, you can parasite the wake up diagnosis line from there. If not, you need to run this line to the back of the radio. Lastly, lock and unlock the vehicle so the the head unit recognizes that a new component has been installed. Go in the the PSTII and make sure that the MOST actual and MOST required control units match. Hope this helps.
