Strange Grinding Sound at Start

In the last few days as the engine turns over / or just slightly after / there is a kind of rumbling-grinding sound (trans?). No more problems while driving.

I have the same kind of noise from my 99 996. Especially when I start the engine in the morning. I can hear a little in low speed. But no more problem when my engine is warm or while I am driving in higher speed.

I guess this is a bit of an old thread. Anyway, just to follow up, the very quiet rumbling rattle that I heard turned out to be a waterpump on its way out. It finally went, was replaced, and all is quiet and well (except for that noisy control arm ball joint...). It's to be expected at 120,000 miles, I suppose.
