Showing the p0420 code for catalytic converter bank 1, just had an o2 sensor replaced (320+labor) and a new alternator installed (600+ labor) ouch! Was the alternator necessary to change? Doubtful but now I’m trying to save a couple bucks - what does everything think about this brand/product? Any opinions?

  2. Ok just got to auto parts plus- reading is for miscellaneous misfire cylinders 1, 2 and 3 are misfiring so maybe it was gasoline dropping all over and burning off not oil. I guess the sludge is just from being cold and the coolant level seems fine as does the oil level. After starting up engine lost power again rpm dropped super low and it was clearly struggling.

  3. Wow surprise continued problems from the 996 Carrera, everything that can happen has happened to me! I recall a post about mayonnaise or some white discharge in the oil filling tube but an having trouble finding it (oil separator issue?) anyway, got off work last night - pretty cold around 40 degrees F and got the check engine light after starting up.... Nothing sounded abhorrent except for a little loss in power but it came back feeling fine.... Go to autozone and their reader won't work about to go to auto parts plus now just to see what the code is but as I was driving 7 miles home on the freeway notice a substantial amount of smoke coming from the back. Realize after stopping that oil has leaked all over the back right side of the engine :( oil level is just slightly low (two bars lower than the max) so I'm looking for the leak (head gasket? Coolant separator?) open the oil input cover and see the white goo.... What's my next move? Jeff in PA if you're not too busy0258fc8a2bd2471a43aa92aa9ddb3866.jpg

Can someone shed a little light

  4. Hi HSA, I had an ims failure in my 911 last year, I bought the car and couldn't see it leave so we did a rebuild and although time consuming and expensive it didn't get too far - little etching on the first cylinder. Drove it about 6k miles did an oil change etc thing sounds like an animal and was the last year or the 996 (the car from the brochure I had going through puberty). Point is, every car has a story and while I don't think you should give up your search for the 911 (watched a few wheeler dealers featuring some beat up Porsches recently) you should go for it! Get the manual and do some things yourself and set aside a few dollars (more than you might expect) I don't think going higher mileage is necessarily a bad call either to save some dollars. With German engineering that tight suspension should stay tight well into the 100k+ mile range

  5. Dear Internet, I post today with a heavy concerned heart for my little lady. Someone who I love who has shown me the utmost respect and dedication for the last few years since we've been together. I'm talking of course about my one and only 2004 996 carrera coupé. Not 12 hours ago my wife and I drove over to the park to walk around and enjoy a beautiful day and I parked the car. Unusually the engine died right as I pulled into a spot. Not thinking anything of it (operator error) we took a stroll around. Returning to the car I turn over the ignition to nothing. Uh oh battery? Replaced last summer so not likely. Kept turning it over and all of a sudden we're lit up with what sounds like rocks or small bearing fragments invading the engine?? Immediately I shut off with my mind racing and a feeling of indescribable despair in my soul. I turned over once more to get a quick video to ask a professional. YouTube linked right here....

So I'm hoping no engine damage and like this guy I'll be able to remove the engine pan clean out what seems to be a blown apart intermediate shaft bearing and as described here a few flushes with oil

    http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/Boxster_Tech/14-ENGINE-Intermediate_Shaft_Bearing/14-ENGINE-Intermediate_Shaft_Bearing.htm

I live in Stamford Connecticut which borders on Greenwich (expensive) and I'm wondering if anyone has a suggestion on where to go... I would also love some assurance that the engine and car will be fine since I wasn't driving at the time only had the engine on for 5-10 seconds max and the bearing fragments are probably stuck in a quagmire of oil before they get to the engine... Can't sleep
