  1. It really does not matter where the vacuum switch is mounted, though it looks like this sort of bracket is used somewhere else in the car. Must have been packed by mistake.

The P/N of the correct bracket is 996.111.989.00 and is called a "Holder ->Electric change over valve.".

You might see if whoever you bought the kit from will get you the correct bracket.

Thanks Orient. The people I bought the kit from didn't know the correct PN, nor did their supplier, so this should help!

  2. Replacing the Sim card tray in a PCM2

So, if you've got a sim card tray in a PCM 2 unit which either stays in or stays out, you'll need a new sim card tray. You can order a new one by contacting Becker direct and asking for your local becker parts reseller. In the UK, its around £20 plus VAT. In terms of fitting, you'll need a set of torx head drivers, numbers 8 and 6. You'll also need a 5mm hex head allen key. You don't need to disconnect the battery, but its probably adviseable. Remember on UK (and probably all European cars

  3. I've got the wrong vacuum holder in my PSE kit but it hasn't got a part number in the TSB.

Any one know the right part number for the holder? Its the bracket which fits over the positive terminal in the engine bay and has an angle on it taking it at 45 degrees up from a mounting point to over the terminal, then horizontally over the top where the relay is mounted on it.

    Thanks,

    Tim

  4. Well done indeed :clapping:

I ended up, after 3 months of negotiations with clueless dealer, getting a remanufactured PCM2. I trust the original owner had no issues with me knowing of all his French addresses which were left on it!

Anyway, PUK agreed to pick up the cost of the unit and fitting (took the dealer 4 hours!!!!!!!!!!!!), BUT, I would have to pay for the replacement mapping discs as they only ship reman'd PCM II's with OS 3.0, which will only work with the latest discs, and not the versions I had.

Cost to me in the end I think was around £400.... Oh well!!! I write it off as another gouge on the customer, but also simply a cost of owning Porsche.

Please let us know the details of AEL and the pics - I might order a new tray just to keep as a spare!

    I'll post pics tonight.

    Contact :

Advanced Electronics & Logistics Ltd., High Street, Princess End, Tipton, West Midlands DY4 9HG Tel.: 121-5226652, Fax: 121-5201352

E-mail: ayub.kola@@qualtronyc.co.uk. They might take a bit of time to come back, but they're pretty good. I was going to order another to keep a spare.

I had a similar good will offer form Porsche to pick up 75% of the cost of a new PCM unit. Considering I'd just bought the car, I thought this was suspiciously generous of them! Perhaps they've had a lot of complaints...

oh, and 4 hours labour to refit a new PCM2 unit means it was a pretty dumb mechanic. It really is a 10 min swap out job, then 30 mins on the PST2 unit to reprogramme.

  5. Well, this seems a little more common than it should be. Just bought a 996 cab (03), used the sim card holder twice and now it won't come out. Has anyone been able to get inside the module to see if you can fix it yourself?

Just thought I'd post the solution to this for all those who have the problem.

Contact becker through their web site and ask for your local becker part reseller. In the UK, its a company called AEL.

Order a new "sim card holder for the Porsche / Becker PCM2". Its around £20 plus VAT delivered.

The PCM unit can be dismantled fairly easily with around 10 screws getting to the front of the unit. I'll post pics for taking the unit apart when I've got them onto the PC. The sim card holder just swaps out with the new one, and voila! - working sim card holder again.

The reason the tray breaks is that there is a small piece of plastic which fits in a guide and moves a lever everytime you push the tray in and out. This snaps off, leaving the tray staying in or out.

A new PCM 2 unit from Porsche is around 900 plus fitting, so this is a cheap repair!

  6. As long as thay are the "big tube" design they will work on any 996 (as shown on Carnewal.com).

It is the "small tube" version that Porsche says to use only on 3.4 liter cars.

    Thanks Loren,

So is the last number (01) just the year of manufacture, and no difference in performance / noise? I've only saved a small amount over buying direct from Porsche, so want to have the latest model.

    Cheers,

    Tim

  7. Hi,

I've just recieved a PSE kit from a part co in the UK for a 2003 996 model cab.

The exhausts are numbered 996.111.984/985.01, but I see the latest model ends .03. They look like the 03 model (per the pics on Carnewal) so looks like the right one for a 3.6 l car, but is there any difference between the models?

    Cheers,

    Tim

  8. I assume you are sure that you reconnected all the cables in the back of the unit?

Have you tried removing the map CD and then putting it back and reloading the maps with the Map button?

If after 5 minutes there is still no map displayed (or it is still frozen), then the complete system must be shut down as follows:

    1. Remove ignition key. Leave the vehicle, lock it with the hand-held transmitter (or vehicle key) and leave it locked for at least 5 minutes.

    2. Unlock the vehicle with the hand-held transmitter (or vehicle key).

    3. Then repeat the map loading startup process.

Loren - You're a star. Yes, it worked thanks. Just needed to leave it off to reset itself.

    Cheers,

    Tim
