  1. Paul, I bought my 99 this past March. 43K, I did purchase the extended waranty from Western General. It cost me $3,600 for 3 yrs or 36 k. So far I have used it once for a dealer replacement mass air flow. I have a $100 deductable and Westen paid the difference, no questions asked.  Good luck !

    Rick

My daily driver, 1999 996 C2 coupe tiptronic, with 73k miles... Is there an extended warranty available and if so what has been your experience with them?

    Pro's vs. Cons?

    Paul

Western General was the company that refused coverage for me, my car had done 32,000 miles and was 4 years old.. It was around $3,600 for 3 yrs . The insurance was done by Rector in Burlingame and 30 days later I got their ( Western General) refusal in the mail ( I did get my money back). No explanation was given.

  2. Pat,

The piece of trim yuor referring to is simply called a "rubber lip" per PET.  This is part of the front wheel housing liner assembly.

The replacement parts for these items are:

    996-504-503-00     Left Side

    996-504-504-00     Right Side

I don't have the pricing currently, but from past experience, it isn't too much.  The one's for the rear are about $17/per.

    Hope this helps.

And you can expect to replace them regularly. They are aiding the air discharge for the cooler fans so I believe. At least that's where all the hot radiator heat is coming from when the fans are on.

Got it wrong ( did not read it all). Those are the flaps behind the front wheels.

  4. Well one week after getting my Boxster S, we find out m wife is pregant! (ops).

So no it looks like a 996 is in my near future.

Am I correct that you can fit a baby seat in the rear of a 996?

Hey congrats. I guess it wasn't planned, but then again they never are. I think a rear facing one will only fit properly in the front seat, but you'd have to get the airbag de-activation kit. You may find a rear facing that fits in the back, but it would take up so much leg room, that you wouldn't be able to fit a front passenger.

I have the Britax Roundabout forward facing (~$180) in the back and it fits perfectly. Don't buy one from Porsche unless you want to spend $500 on a car seat. Britax was the OEM for the forward facing Porsche car seat a couple of years back. Not sure who they use now.

I also have a Brittax in the back of the 996. It cost me new about 70 bucks. The one Ihave is for a small child say 2 years and up, rather than for a new born baby. The back of the seat can come off when the child is bigger and it looks than like a booster seat. The problem with the Porsche is that the seat width in the back is very narrow. My Brittax seat can be adjusted width-wise from about 12 inches or so up to about 17 inches. A perfect fit. If anybody wantys additio0anl information I will dig up the particular model etc. The Porsche seat made by Brittax that has the airbag disabling feature was discontinued for the 996 quite some time ago. That is a seat for the front of the car.

  6. Cay-Ute

Well, welcome to the world of Porsche!!!

I agree Bridgestone SO2A's are best tire I have ever had on my car...maybe thats because they say N4!!..

    Jim

To say that I am thrilled to find out that Porsche is now blocking access to their preferred/ suggested tires is an understatement. Now there has to be an opportunity for someone to make a buck out of this and providing a real service to a large community of Porsche owners.

How difficult would it be to find a tyre manufacturer who is prepared to supply the handful of tire sizes we all use with a tire that meets our expectations for road use. Granted we all have our favorites and we all have a different driving style but the difference in tires, for the majority of us comes down to , how long to last , tire road noise, wet and dry weather capabilities, costs and unrestricted availability. Manufacturers such as Kumho, Hoosier and others would most likely be interested in putting a package together for us Porsche fanatics. If I would be in the car business ( what ever that would mean) I certainly would look at this and see if I could build a business around it. Let me think, 20,000 Porsches in the USA , each 2 new tires every year ( or a new set every 2 years) at 200 bucks per tire. Sounds like a lot of potential to me.

    Markets are created this way..

    Cheers

  7. Porsche's own short throw shifter seems to have a warning on it that states that the shifting with a cold engine may be difficult. It that the same with this B&M shifter kit?? If this is not the case I would be interested in "investing" in such a kit. I have been reading these threads and I am still seeing the same issue popping up regularly. What is the secret or is Porsche literature correct.?

  8. Folks , I found some interesting information with regard to changes in car behavior that you can expect when you change certain settings on your car.

NOTE: This came from a Kart site so it has some Kart specific information , however , the rest seems to be relevant to us all.

    Tech Tips

    Chassis Performance

If Kart is loose in rear (oversteer)

    1. Wider front track

    2. Narrower front tires

    3. Narrower rear tires

    4. Wider rear tires

    5. Higher air pressure in front

    6. Lower air pressure in rear

    7. Move weight to rear

    8. Loosen rear bumper

    9. Increase frame flex

If Kart is pushing (won't turn)

    1. Narrower front track

    2. Wider front tires

    3. More sidewalk flex

    4. Tire wears on outside edges

    5. Same effect as a softer tire

    Track Width

    Front Narrower

    1. Front will bite more

    2. Steer easier

  9. Now that would be an interesting system. I assume you have a compressor providing you with the "cold" air ( ala fridge/freezer system)and I would assume you have the internal fans ( in the dash) that would circulate that cooled, cold air. I would also assume that the two fans in the front are there to cool the water in the front radiators ( and maybe move the air away around the brakes although that air would heat up the brakes rather than cool it?)

Today is Tax day and not April fools day.

  10. Folks, I noticed a few days ago that I had a major cooling fan noise in the front . Now I have noticed the fans are on even with the engine pretty cold ( say a few minutes after I start the engine). I checked and both fans are blowing air at a very high rate of volume out in front of the front wheels.

I also noticed about 1 week ago that the warning light ( rear spoiler light) went on for some time and then switched itself off ( have not seen any unusual behavior ie it come on at start and goes out within less than one minute). I am mentioning that just in case there is a connection.

    What can be wrong??

  11. An old trick to figure out if your shocks are shot is to simply press ( with your hand and putting your body weight on) the body down above each of the wheels. If the car rebounds more than once, you're in for new shocks. Then stand in front of your car , spread your arms and grab the bumper and try to shake the car from left to right Do the same in the back .If it's loose and/or makes noises , buy new shocks.

  12. I have sport seats in my 1999 C2 and I love them because they do fit extremely close around your back and as I like to drive leaning back with stretched arms it is really comfortable around the shoulders too.

Now I hear there are 2 different sizes, one being 1 12/2 inch wider than the other one but that could be a rumor..

I do believe that the sport seat is somewhat more narrow than the standard leader seat.

    HarryR

  13. I would suggest to take the car in to the dealership and have them verify that it is not an potential RMS problem. If they say it's not such an issue you will be feeling better. If it turns out to be an RMS in the making you have sufficient time to start rattling the cages and get some agreement as to whom is going to cough up the money for the repair. The quicker you have the information on record at the dealer ship , the better.

    Good luck.

    C99- dry and running great

  14. Yep, that's what Carlsen quoted me today, needless to say that I would not spring for that one. So I asked how did they get to that price. The service person said : 190 bucks for the battery from Porsche + 1/2 installation + 250 bucks. SO I asked him which it would take 1/2 hour and he stated that:

1/ they have to reset the radio ( which is true)

2/ they have to set the windows??

So, I am going to go elsewhere, just wanted to know what I getting myself into .. I see 12 volt batteries for 60 bucks, all good makes from what I can see. I am just wondering what you on this RenTech board do in this case.

    HarryR

PS I noticed Loren has posted a link...better read that one quickly . Thanks Loren!! :clapping:
