  1. Just about to do the brake fluid change on my 99 996, for right hand drive 996's the master cylinder is on the right hand side of the car, am I correct in assuming I should start with the left rear wheel, the DIY is for left hand drive cars and suggests to start with the right rear.

    You hypothesis is correct only if you were changing the brake fluid in the northern hemisphere. Since you are in Australia, you can compensate for southern hemisphere gravitational pull by inverting the car. Then starting with the left wheel as viewed from the front of the car would be correct.

    Lastly, when re-torquing the wheel lug nuts be sure to accomplish this by using only a left-handed torque wrench.

    Thanks Orient, hadn't thought of that, that would make it easier to get the cosmoline off the engine and gearbox too, is this the method you use for your concours prep.

    I'll re phrase the question, do I do the wheel furthest from the master cylinder first. That seems logical to me but I just wanted to make sure I was doing it correctly and not leaving any old fluid in the system. The position of the master cylinder is different on LHD and RHD cars.

  3. I have noticed that when I run my car especially hard that when I get out I smell a distinct oil burn smell. My car seems to have no leaks, maybe a seap from a gasket but no real spot on the floor leaking problem. Does anyone else have this same smell? Is it normal?

    Do a search for ''burning oil smell'' you will see that Pat posted a similar question in Feb 05. Quite a few replies.

  4. Any advertising is GOOD advertising.. I remember ... when I was 18, I bought a Morris Cooper S from a bunch of racers, no heating, plastic side windows, Speedwell exhaust down the middle. I plastered big round white racing numbers on the doors and ...off I went. I had fun, could not care about any body else .. pulled the chicks for sure... advertising is GOOD.

    Ohh yes... blew the engine twice and the gear box 3 times... I still have a smile on my face....luckily I am only 5 ft 8 ... otherwise would have missed lots of fun in the back seat too....

    Cant agree more, I also started with a Mini Cooper, no advertising but the back seat worked a treat. Lucky our first cars were not 996's, would have missed out on lots of fun or ended up with permanent back problems.

  5. Have someone else check to see if your reverse lights are coming on when reverse is selected. If the reverse signal is not triggering then the tilt function will not activate.

    No the reverse lights aren't working either, I have checked all other light circuits and memory functions, its just the reverse lights and the tilt function that are not working. Is there a sensor on the gear shift that send the signal, any DIY's to replace it if there is. Thanks

  6. The tilt mirror and reversing lights on my 99 996 c2 RHD stopped working this morning. I have checked and replaced the fuse Row B number 5 and this has not fixed the problem.

    The memory function in my seats works OK and both mirror adjustments work OK. I have tried resetting the tilt mirrow with the car in reverse, ignition on pressing M&1. Next step is to check for a blown globe/s in the reversing lights but it seems strange that the other items covered by this fuse are working.

    Any ideas what it could be. Thanks.

    Just noticed that the memory function adjusts the mirrors OK when I select 1 - 2 or 3 on the seat adjust. Is there a mechanical sensor attached to the reverse gear selector that activates the mirrors and reversing lights, seems logical that this is where the problem probably is.

  7. I just did the same after replacing the battery. My car would stall each time I took my foot off the pedal, spoke to my Porsche mechanic [not a Porsche dealer] and he suggested to do that rather than waiting for the computer to reset. Worked perfectly and no problems since cleaning.

    is there a DIY or is it just pretty much self explanatory? Anyone took pics? I started to notice that my idle is a little rough lately. How much time would you estimate for the job?

    The build up around the butterfly was difficult to remove on mine, like a black gum, I used some methylated spirit on the cloth, think you call it rubbing alcohol in the US, not sure about Germany.

  8. I thought he hit the nail on the head from the perspective of how Porsche has positioned the Cayman in between the 911 and the Boxter. It was quite funny actually.

    Okay, okay I definitely have to see that vid. Would anybody be willing to mail it to me or even better put it on another server? Tried http-tunneling to get by the restrictions of google but had no success. The only reason I could imagine why they would do this is copyright protection :censored: .

  9. Yeah, I think there is an new IE bug with Acrobat. Seems after Microsoft's latest security update it won't let you view it in the browser. I normally use Firefox so I didn't notice it until now.

    It should work if you save it to disk first though.

    I am having problems opening it too. If I click on the link it takes me straight to a forum page which says I dont have permission to view the article.

    Also I notice the skin has changed since you did your software upgrade and the link to change the skin is no longer active

  10. My 99 C2 had a similar problem a few months after I bought it new in Aug 99. I got underneath the car and found that the noise was coming from inside the bell housing but it took three round trips of 80 km to the delear before they finally removed the gearbox and fixed the problem. Not sure if they replaced a part or just lubricated the throw out mechanism but 5 years later it's still ok. It sounded and felt like a lack of lubrication on the throw out mechanism but resulted in a very noisy and notchy cluth movement.

    Just for the record they forgot to re install various brackets and pipe clamps removed when the box came out which I found on a subsequent trip under the car.

    High labour charges and sloppy work seems to be the case around the world with Porsche dealers.

    I just purchased a set of nobs from Becker and they are only $.20 each with a minimum purchase of $5, plus s+h. I bought 4 for $5.80. Pretty good buy and well worth it. I hated those nobs on humid days.

    The Australian Becker agent charges around A$9.00 per piece, about US$7.00, wish I had bought from the US, even with postage it would have been cheaper.

  12. The knobs can not be replaced by themselves. Some MY99 cars had the radio buttons "peel". The original buttons had stick on markings so they started to peel after some time of use. Dealers replaced the radio with an exchange or new unit when the cars were under warranty (including mine). You can try to get your dealer to do the same - but out of warranty would be purely a courtesy.

    I have had mine replaced twice, first by the dealer secondly by myself. I just contacted the distributor of the radio and they did a mail order for me. I'm in Australia, would think you could do the same in the USA.

    My first set peeled, second set became sticky, easy to take them off, just lever gently around the edges.

I took a look at this while my car was up on the lift Saturday.  OMG!  It was *disgusting*.  The previous owner had clearly never even bothered to look.  I can't believe that I had a/c working still.  Cleaned it out and found that the a/c worked much better and the coolant temps were down too!  Next time the bumper cover comes off its gonna get a *real* cleaning.  Thanks for the heads up!

    Mine was the same, I was able to get an long extention nozzle on the vacuum cleaner to get the visible stuff out but I am not confident that the condenser is clear all the way through. The mix had set pretty hard.

    Anyone know how difficult it is to get the plastic panels off under the bumper, it looks like you could get access that way without the need to remove the whole bumper. Mine is a 99C2
