  1. i'm still trying to figure the benefits of this upgrade.

The benefit is a far superior filter to the OEM paper job. The filter recommendations given by Charles from LN, filter far more finer particulate than the factory filter. This, coupled with with magnetic drain plug, captures material that otherwise gets recycled throughout your engine between each oil change.

Even if you do not wish to switch to the LN adapter, do your engine a favor and change the oil frequently (5 to 6k miles).

  2. There are many other tires out there that will work on your Boxster...I, for one, do not have a hang-up on the Porsche approved rating. Doesn't mean the other tires aren't acceptable, they just didn't pay the juice to have the the tires tested and put on the list. Just don't buy some cheap unknown brand; if you stick with a quality manufacturer, you will not have an issue.

  3. This, a quote from Jake Raby, from another thread:

"When I hear any complaint of a rattle in the engine I immediately recommend having the IMS bearing checked for issues.. Thats because if caught early enough it can be repaired... Sometimes 1 mile of driving can make the difference in salvaging the engine or not.

Lots of things can rattle including water pumps, pressure plates, A/C compressors and the list goes on.. None of those rattles are more critical than that of the IMS bearing. Thats why ANY rattle should be taken seriously and looked at immediately!"

Looks like you truly did luck out on this one!

  4. My feeling is don't be afraid to work on the car yourself...worst that happens is you screw it up and then take it to someone for repair.

Better yet, ask around and see if there is someone near by that can lend you a hand...lots of folks enjoy wrenching cars on an afternoon. My friend has two lifts and has shown me how to do projects I never would have tackled on my own (pulling the 911 engine, swapping trannys and installing coilovers, just to name a few projects).

  5. Depending upon your tire brand, you will see small arrows on the side of the treadwall. If you are not rolling over to the arrows, you are overinflated. Conversely, if you are rubbing them off, add a little more air.

Track days are a blast; concentrate on smoothness and don't worry about how quick you are...it comes with seat time.

  6. Jake, I read your write up with great interest, but do have a question. I thought I'd read in prior comments that the dual row bearing was actully larger than the outer diameter opening in the case? After looking at your photos, this is obviously not true. It appears the difference is the retaining clip that collapses when you pull the bearing with the special tool Charles devised. That sucker must be pressed in really tight from your comments about forces and possible case breakage.

Thanks for the great write up!

  7. cant see the allure of hearing the induction

What!!!? How can you not be taken by the sound of the air rushing into your engine? The deep howl?

My 911 runs 40 IDA triple throat Webers and I absolutely love the sound when the butterflys open. My Box S was so quiet, I've had to do mods to make it sound like a sports car.

bmohr, did you install an EVO and were still disappointed, or a copy?
