Hello all,

I dug out my spare key after 2-3 years of non-use. When I press the unlock button, I just get a solid red light on the key (my regular remote key has a flashing light). Whilst I can start and drive the car with the second key, it doesn't seem to be working as a remote.

Any ideas? Perhaps it needs resyncing; anybody have instructions how to do that?

I had something similar, not exactly the same... there was a noise from the engine at idle, and the engine would rev with the noise. It cycled every 5-10 seconds at idle, though it would come and go.

That problem was fixed by a new ignition under warranty... I'm guessing around 75k miles.

Turns out there's still about 50% left on them - I misread the wear - and the actual problem was a faulty brake sensor.

I had my coolant hoses replaced around 75k, due to a leak... I don't know if that's common or not, but an FYI...

Hi all,

I had a new set of front brakes put on 12 months/ 12,000 miles ago. Today I get the "brake wear" warning light, and checking the pads, they are indeed worn out.

My last set of pads - which were on the car when I bought it - lasted about 2 years, 30k+ miles. Car is never tracked, and if anything my driving style is gentler these days...

Pads were installed at the dealer, and I'm suspecting a bad installation... anybody have any idea what could have wrong?

For reasons too long to go into, I recently had to remove the spare from my 02 Targa, and found amazingly, the car now handles way better.... anyone else found this? If you've never tried it (especially Cab/Targa) owners, I recommend giving it a try this weekend, and letting me know if its just me!

I'd like to replace the spare with a fix-it-kit in case of a flat... any recommendations?

Personally, I wouldn't be concerned.... there's safety margains in oil over-fill and I've had enough blue smoke wiithout problems --- its a boxer after all....

Had some very strange behavior from my 02 Targa today. The car wouldn't start. and while the starter was attempting to turnover, the spoiler deployed and the windows opened, as if magically possessed by the ghost of things electrical!

Moneys on the battery nearing the end of its life, but any more bets before I take her in? :D

Thanks, I checked my tire pressures, and they were way under inflated. I drive a Targa, and the pressures are higher than other 996s, I believe... I'd expect Joe Blow'ss Discount Tires to make that mistake but not a Porsche dealer!

I had the exact same problem, now all is well :D

First, get rid of the useless CD (or tape) holder and replace it with a standard shelf. That will get rid of 90% of the problem.

If you still have issues, you can install felt strips between the shelves. I had the dealer do this for me -- $1 in parts, $50 in labor, but hey, it was worth it to hear my stereo as nature intended.

TIP: if you take it to the dealer, make sure you put a disc in where track 1 has some nice bass to show the issue at the start of the song! Nothing like making the tech's life easy...

Did you replace with the same exact tire? How many miles are on the other tire on the same axel? Is the new tire defective (out of round)? Is it balanced properly? Road forced balanced? How far did you drive on the flat tire? Did you bend the rim?

Replaced both rears at the same time after the flat. I would assume that its balanced correctly, the rims are ok and the tires are not defective -- all done at the dealer, who normally do great work and check everything. Must of driven about 5 miles on the flat.

After a flat tire a couple of weeks back (which is a story in itself!), my ride seems a lot rougher on the new tires. Is it possible the springs/suspension could have been damaged whilst driving with the flat? Any tips on what I can look for?

Do you guys think that I'm nuts to say that I think the 996 Turbo looks better?

No.... both have their charms, but everytime I see a 997 now, I do wish there were either 2002+ turbo or Carerra GT style headlights (you can stone me later). Love the look of the current 997 from the back though.... which is where most people will see it from :)

If I were to power into the cigarette lighter from behind, is there a chance of draining battery power when the ignition is off for an extended period?

Just curious, does anyone know if leaving something like ipod connector plugged in permenantly to the cigarette lighter directly will drain the battery?

I've been told it does on German cars...

Ok, thanks! I'm going to take it into the dealer again - since it is under warranty and they should fix it - and get them to show me a copy of the TSB. Failing that, I'll try some DIY.

I seem to be able to *just* illuminate something at 30ft using the left headlight which seems way to short to me. In fact, the CA DMA says it should be 100ft on low beams, 350ft on high beams.

I had a 99 986 for 3 years, and bought an 02 996 C2 Targa a few months ago. The 996 feels more solid than the 986 did, and I'm pleasently surprised how well the 996 handles in a sharp high speed turn; I was expecting more drift from the rear end due to the rear engine layout.

With a C2 Cab, you'll be loosing a rear trunk, which is something to consider. You can always use the back seats, but they're harder to access with the windstop in place. But at least you'll have two kiddie seats or four adult seats in an emergency!

My dealer installed a new left headlight on my 02 996 Targa. The light is now aimed significantly lower than it was previously, the dealer says that this was done according to a TSB. Has anyone heard of this?

Frankly, the beam is just too low to drive safely. When I follow the manual's instructions on how to adjust vertical height, there is no screw to adjust! That is, no screw behind tab "B" listed on page 234 of the manual. Mine are BiXenons, but it seems they should be adjustable, even with the self-leveling circuitry. Does anyone know if the BiXenons have the adjustment screws in a different location?

Thanks for the replies. I wondered why my 1999 986 had it under the tach, and the 996 didn't. Sounds like a short sighted design change. Strange the computer cannot display the information, since it must already know it.

I just got a new left headlight for my 2002 996 Targa, and its aimed much lower than before. I took it back to the dealer, and they said that there was a TSB that the original 02 headlights were aimed too high, and they adjusted it to the correct height. To me, however, it seems quite low.

Has anyone else come across this? I couldn't see a TSB relating to headlight adjustment. Is it possible for me to adjust the headlights myself; seeing as BiXenons are self-leveling, I'm not sure if its possible....

Anybody know if its possible to move the digital speedometer to the main computer display, under the tach? It seems a more natural place for it than off to the side.

2002 996 C2 Targa

By the way, I thought Targas were 2002 only?

I know that most people will tell me not to use the front plate; however, that is not an option. My front plate holder keeps coming off. I have replaced the shims and screw twice and it does not seem to hold. Does anyone have any sugestions for keeping the front plate holder on? :cursing:

After buying a 2002 C2 Targa 3 months ago, I had the same thing within days of having the license plate put on by the dealer. I'm waiting for a replacement plate (at the dealer), and would love to know if anybody else has had this problem.
