  1. I noticed a 910 in the Wanted section of the PCA website classified earlier today. <_<

I just caught up with the thread on Pelican - now I understand what it was all about :clapping:

I thought April Fools only worked in April

ps: there's at least three on eBay at the moment - but the guy in Nigeria selling them may want to wire you some money first.... :jump:

  2. On page 1, someone very kindly put up photos of the thing to cut. Could someone tell me though, am i basically just cutting a length of the silver bit of that red bit?

Basically, yes - the only thing I did was to 'completely' remove the diode (the 'red' bit) so there was no risk of anything shorting accross the remaining legs of the diode - you could either tape it up - or take a bit of time and care and remove the back leg so there's nothing left of the diode.

Also, in terms of actually getting to these relays - is it a get on your back and shimmy under the dash job? Is there any carpeting covering the wiring that I would need to remove first?

Yes - stick your head under the driver's side dash - nothing to remove as the relays should be exposed.

It's a really easy - and VERY worthwhile trick - I still thank the guy who came up with it everytime I start the car, drive through a tunnel, past a high wall, overtake in second gear......... :clapping:

  3. A friend took his '04 996 in for some minor work to an independant - and while there asked if they could check the warranty breaking over-runs recorded.

When the DME module was interrogated on the Bosch, it came up saying the DME was country code C10? Should be C16 for the UK (chassis sticker, service book sticker and chassis print from Porsche confirm this).

Also, that the mileage recorded in the DME was 22,036kms (about 13,100miles) - however the instrument cluster shows 7,800miles - and when queried, the instrument cluster confirmed 7,800 miles.

Any ideas why the DME and instrument cluster would show a discrepancy such as mileage and country code? The VIN recorded in the DME matches the rest of the car.

    Any suggestions most welcome.

    Many thanks in advance

    Philip

  4. Ok - I got hold of a contact at the Porsche Centre involved and they confirmed that they did indeed fit the PSE to my GT3 - aparently they did two systems for GT3 owners in 2004 and the system will fit but required minor changes to the brackets (didn't get any more detail than that).

    Phew - so it's legitimate!

So, GT3 owners looking for an exhaust system that won't invalidate Porsche warranty - PSE is possible

  5. If the mufflers are Porsche parts then they will have a Porsche logo and part number tag on them.

I took my GT3 to the local MOT station (annual vehicle inspection after three years old) and looked all around the exhaust while she was on the ramp - couldn't see any part numbers as I guess they're on the side that faces into the rear PU.

I know the system was fitted by Porsche GB themselves - and they would never fit a non-Porsche part to a car within warranty period.

I'll try calling Porsche UK and see what they say - might be able to get a copy of the original supply invoice to the previous owner although last time I tried they went on about 'data protection' etc etc. :censored:

    Philip

  6. yes, it can be fitted - my '04 GT3 has PSE fitted by Porsche GB - it has the relay mod and stays on the whole time
Are you sure that it is a Porsche part? not a third party? Can you give us part number(s)?

Well, it was fitted by Porsche UK (by a previous owner)

Where would I find the part number and I'll go digging :)

Beginning to worry now as if Loren don't know it - it probably doesn't exist

    Philip

  7. Gang,

Pardon me if this has been asked before but someone asked me and I can't seem to find any solid references in the archives.

-Can the standard 996 PSE (Porsche Sport Exhaust) be fitted onto an MY04 GT3?

-If the cans fit, then how about the vacuum and electrical installation?

Um - I'm REALLY loathe to contradict Loren - but yes, it can be fitted - my '04 GT3 has PSE fitted by Porsche GB - it has the relay mod and stays on the whole time :-) Well worth the money - in my opinion - as you get the noise and keep your warranty

  8. Hi Guys and gals,

checked out the search first with no luck.

Like all neebies I have a problem, its with my Porsche cdr23 cd/radio. When my car was 2 weeks old I had my radio removed and my Alpine sat nav gear installed. Now I am upgrading my car so the 3.2S has to go, the guys at the audio shop removed my sat nav gear and reinstalled the porsche radio, but I now get the dredded PROTECT coming up, They told me they thought it was a key code request but my dealer informed me that their were no key codes fro my year of boxster (2003), and I would need to take my car into them to have the radio reset. When I took it in today they spent 15 minutes on it in the workshop and now say that I need a new radio which will cost me £500.00 (around a thousand bucks). Does anyone out there have any ideas of a fix, or must I get a bank loan to pay for bad luck. :cursing:

    I'm not very technical - but I'll give it a go :)

The 2003 MOST equipped cars have a connection from the DME to the head unit and the head unit (CDR23) reads the code from the DME on turning the ignition on. For some reason, there's been a problem with your car and headunit.

If you're based in the US Becker have a service to recode the CDR23 - the URL is:

  9. Great photos and job on the wing. I have a red GT3 and am thinking of something similar. How did this impact the control on the track (i.e. at DEs).

Sorry - I've only driven her about 20 miles since doing the job - the weather over here is not good enough to venture too far in a car with no traction control

However, I think I noticed more downforce on the rear end above 40mph ish - front felt a little lighter - which I suppose is kind of logical

I'll be out in her some more at the end of the week when the weather is due to improve and I'll let you know.

  10. "dark and overcast" in England? How can that be?

Don't! It's soooo depressing  It was glorious sunshine (but chilly at 1degree c) this morning - thought "great - get out and enjoy it!" by the time I went outside the sun had gone :help:

I saw the pics over on Rennlist of the SY with its winglets painted. I really like that look, and may go that route, but, for now, I like the cf to complement my wheels.

I don't mean to be a copy cat - but I'm looking for a scrappy set of wheels I can refurb.....in black

    Philip

  11. Many thanks for the instructions - it was incredibly simple (as I thought it would be) but approached the job with much more confidence with your advice - thanks :)

Here's a couple of pictures post install - I've decided I'm going to run with the cf finish for a week or two before I decide to paint it - the winglets need minor refurb of the laquer (why I got it so cheap :D ) so either way so I'm going to hold off painting.

  12. Pop the caps. You will see torx screws. You will need to completely unscrew them. Be careful to keep control of the screw lest it drop into the body cavity. Lift the wing up from the rear edge until you feel resistance. There is a small button latch on each side that you will need to depress to continue free movement. Once past that point, it wll lift out.

The cf wing slides in similarly. Seat the front of the wing on the stanchion, insert the guides into the slots. Move it down. You will hear it as you pass the button latches. Screw it into place.

Voila, will look like mine!

Woohoo - thanks I guessed it would be easy enough - just wanted to be sure there wasn't a catch :) Looks like I'll be in the garage tomorrow morning :D

Love to see a photo of yours - I can't decide whether to leave it in CF of paint it guards to match the car

    Thanks again

    Philip

  13. I've managed to obtain a GT3 RS carbon fibre wing for a good price - before I start getting into trouble :( How do I remove the old wing?

I can see the two caps on the inside of each wing pillar and guess that under these there is a hex bolt or something?

Does anyone know the procedure for removing and refitting? Is there anything to be cautious of? :help:

    Many thanks in advance

  14. The creaking sound is most likely the ball joint. It's supposed to be sealed, but it loses some grease. If you use a large syringe, you can inject some grease (make sure it's safe for rubber parts) into the boot and your squeaks will go away. I'm going to eventually see if the replacement boots I have for the 928 are the same size and I'll post it when I find out, but it may be a while.

Aha - thanks for this - I need to fit some new discs to the front so I'll have a poke around then.

    Philip

  15. Lower control arm with built in ball joint was the problem I had.

The whole arm had to be replaced @ £120 for the parts. USD 200 ??????

Also 1 hour labour I reckon

I'm having noises come from my front end on the road - so I suspect the same problem - does no one do a replacement bush for these?

I've just had Elephant Racing bushes fitted to my 1973 car and hope someone might be selling something similar for the moderns!

    Philip

  16. This has come up on the PCGB forum so more than just me are suffering with it!

For some reason my, and others, CDR-23 will 'forget' its sounds setttings - bass, treble, loudness setting - and revert to 'all at 0'.

Even more bizare, sometimes it will loose just the treble and bass and keep the loudness setting - mine is fitted in a '04 GT3 - does anyone know of a problem with these units or is there a firmware fix?

    TIA

    Philip

  17. Eddy,

Many, many thanks for this superb mod :D As others have observed, the longest part of the project was getting the case off the relay

Just taken it down the road and enjoyed my GT3's 'voice' at the mid-range where, because of British roads, it spends most of its time - superb mod - thanks again.

For those who are interested, I use the part no. Loren gave and ordered a replacement relay just in case - £51.00 and will be here tomorrow.

    Philip

  18. Thanks guys :))))

What set-up alignment are you considering for :

    - track use ?

    - track and road use mixed ?

Are you keeping the Porsche stock one ?

Because I have a Cup car for trackwork, I'm leaving my road Clubsport in factory trim - the roll bars have been set full stif (by the previous owner) and I love the handling - although you can't relax for a second :drive:

Also - with all the worries about warranty issues - I'm not doing anything that voids the warranty

  19. Hi Yann,

I am considering buying a GT3 MKII clubsport.

Good choice - I bought mine a few months ago :)

I have some questions about the maintenance cost of the GT3 MKII compared to the 964RS.

Do you GT3 owner know how much more the GT3 will cost compared to the 964RS ?

I sold my 964RS a while ago - but as someone else posted, a GT3 should be cheaper to run:

    1) Parts are more available - on the 964RS for example, the heater control unit is now around €1,200 from Porsche! GT3 parts, being shared with the rest of the 996 *and* 986 family means they're cheaper

    2) The service intervals are much greater - although personally I prefer to service mine every year, rather than on mileage.

    3) Insurance should be cheaper - to repair 964RS's is getting very expensive - GT3's are cheaper to repair if damaged - so this should be reflected in the insurance.

    4) You'll use the GT3 more - so it will be better value for money :) I loved my 964RS and 993RS very much - but they're becomming 'classic cars' and less useable everyday - no matter what the weather I jump in the GT3 and it's become my daily driver - so you'll get more value.

Do you have any track budget description to have an idea of my future expenses :D

This depends :-) The cost is linked to how hard you like to push it on track! I am very lucky and have a GT3Cup for track use - I can get through a set of slicks in two events and they cost around €1,000 a set. Brake pads will last, along with discs, roughly five events.

Because the car is being worked much harder than road use, plan on changing the oil and filter every two to three events.

The other cost for trackdays is insurance - in my old track car, I was hit from behind and pushed into the gravel - no major damage, but a bill of about €2,000 - because there is no third party liability on track days, you're left with the bill - so get insurance - it's worth it!

The other problem, if you're tracking the car - is upgrades :D You're going to want to go faster and harder as you track more - so budget for a suspension upgrade (Manthey c. €3,000), maybe lighter wheels / second set of wheels for track use only (€1,000), exhaust and air box replacement for more power (€2,000?) - it is like a bad addiction - the more you track, the faster you want to be :drive:
