  1. Hi, all. My 2002 C2 is due for a smog check. Can any of you recommend at reliable smog check station in the Bay Area, preferably in the East Bay? TIA.

I have used Harry's in Pleasanton. They are Gold certified and have a test-only station as well. A few years ago, I got my '93 BMW tested from somewhere else and it failed, and then I took it to them and it passed. This year, I had to get my catalytic converter (same car) changed. Went to them (thru CAP) and no complaints.

  2. The car presently has Porsche Carrera Techno 19" wheels on it at the moment. They are:

    Front: J8 x 19 ET57

    Rear: J9.5 x 19 ET46

I have found some Porsche Turbo II alloy wheels on eBay with the following offsets:

    Fronts are 8.5" X 18" with an ET52 offset

    Rears are 10" X 18" with an ET47 offset

    They look like this:

They are a bit wider and the rear offset seems to only be 1mm different - which I doubt will make much difference.

Am I right in thinking I will need a 5mm spacer for the fronts?

The TSB shows that a 19" wheel will fit with these widths.

Don't know about fitment. The front one are going to extend outside 11mm more than the original. You can check wheel sizes/offset and their effect at http://www.1010tires.com/WheelOffsetCalculator.asp

  3. i got my 987S off the lot without the parking sensor system. i find that with the top up, there's little view of the rear, especially with parallel parking. i was wondering if anyone has installed the OEM reverse kit to their car, or at least knows if there is relay kit that will make the passenger side mirror tilt down when in reverse gear?

I have a '06 987S with electronic memory seats, and at least on my car, I can tilt the mirror down in reverse. There are 2 ways:

    1. Put the car in reverse and the mirror adjustment knob to the passenger side (can be done in any order). The passenger mirror will tilt down.

    2. You can save your preference with your seat (I believe "key") memory. Then every time you go into reverse, the mirror will tilt on its own.

  4. Hey, I'll gladly trade you my 18" 2006 987S wheels/tires for your 19's. :) They only have 740 miles on them and all four wheels/tires are perfect.

    Hey Jef,

Replied to your PM before reading this...

Additionally, 3 of my tires are pretty much worn out (down to wear bars), and the fourth is about 5k less (got a flat and replaced it around 6k miles). These days the tires are apparently back ordered from at least TireRack and Costco :o

The front right has a screw in it and needs refilling every couple of days

In other words, probably not a very good deal for you :P

740 miles? Did you just get the car, or is it a garage queen? Or do you have some other rims on it?

As far as fit, to the best of my knowledge (please correct me if I'm wrong), the OEM 18's and 19's for our cars are the same width and offset. The only difference is the diameter which is made up for in the size of the tire (so actual total diameter is the same for both). The stock 18's or 19's should swap very easily with no fitment issues. This is exactly shy I'm looking for OEM 19's for a 987 application.

I believe you're absolutely correct. I think the width is a little different between the 18 and the 19s, but since both are OEM for Boxsters, there wouldn't be any fitting issues.

My original question was re: 993 (I think) turbo wheels that are wider for the rear, and with that particular offset would need spacers.

  5. Hi,

I have 19" wheels, and am thinking of going down to 18". This is mostly due to the lure of AutoX and track, understanding that I'll be burning thru tires a lot quicker. I was wondering if the following size will fit my car? The other thing is that these wheels are narrower than mine in the front and wider in the rears. Is that good or bad?

    Fronts: Part Number - 993.362.134.05 - 7.5Jx18 - ET50

    Rears: Part Number - 993.362.138.00 "B" 993.362.140.01 "A" - 10Jx18 - ET65

    My car is:

    '06 987S (boxster) w/ PASM

My current wheels are Carrera Sports Design, and from markings on wheels are:

    Front 8x19 offset 57

    Rear 9.5x19 offset 46

Is there a technique to calculate whether a wheel will fit or not? Additionally, does anyone know the numbers (width, offsets) of the stock wheels for a 987S?

    Thanks in advance.

  6. I was comparing the opening sequencing of the cabrio top on my Boxster against that of my wifes 996 cab and noticed something very different.....

When you unlock the latch on the Boxster the windows drop about 6 inches to allow the top to open, but stay this way when the top is fully open.

On my wifes 996 cab, the windows drop in a similar way when you use the switch to open the top. However on the 996 when the top is fully open the windows return to the closed position. Much more useful I hear you say.

So why the difference or is this a fault on my Boxster ???

On my boxster, the go up again.

  7. And I forgot to ask the most important question, is your wife okay?

Same question here. I hope she's fine.

I read somewhere that to really get the true diminished value is to sell your car immediately. I'm going from memory, so may be off-base a little bit, but the gist that I got was:

By selling your car right away, the fall in the sale price is/can be added to the repair value.
