  1. PCM 2.1 standard production status. The unit you have uses the DVD navigation system and will require a PCM and Navigation drive update as well as a Bose amp update/ or amp replacment to be able to use newer maps.
  2. You can download a simple screen capture program called hypersnap. This will allow you to take a screen capture of your PC monitor so you can post the files as you see them on the forum.
  3. The part numbers are now discontinued for the PCM 2.1, there is only one navigation update per region and it includes the multimedia update for the PCM as well as the Navigation drive. For the PCM 2.1 the updates were 05.2005 , 10.2005, 05.2006 , 10.2006 and finally 05.2007. The 05.2007 was repackaged with the multimedia update kit as 08.2007 , though the actual MAP DVD is the same as the earlier 05.2007. I have not followed the map availability for the PCM 2 and PCM 1 versions , and early version PET catalogue (pre 2008) should throw some light on this. The map updates are listed as spare parts in the Radio / navigation section under electronic components.
  4. I think you are incorrect on the spring rates. The tech bulletin on the documents pages suggests the PASM springs are actually stiffer for PASM cars (the same PASM equipment fitted to S and 2.7 variants) at 30 newtons/mm on PASM versus 27 newtons/ mm on standard. The anti roll bars are also slightly bigger at 24.5 x 3.8 mm for PASM versus 24.0 x 3.8 on the S model or 23.6 x 3.5 on the base model . The PASM shock does more work in the PASM equipped car than in a standard set up , as it alters with road speed , driving style and switch operation between NORMAL and SPORT. In a nutshell the PASM car shares no common parts with a standard S or 2.7 model in terms of suspension components , springs, shocks or stabilisers (anti roll bars). If you are planning to change springs and are concerned about the clearance then a set of adjustable ride height springs and shocks suited for a non PASM equipped car would be your best option. Mix and matching PASM and non PASM parts is likely to worsen the ride quality and handling.
  5. Not sure how you can cure or improve the IMS issue, the cayman already has a larger bearing and shaft fixing diameter. The root cause is that there is only one bearing taking all the load , so if it weakens then the deterioration is quick. Strengthened con rods should be available from 9ff or Ruf , I believe they developed their own for some of their hi performance models. Good luck with the rebuild please keep us updated with the improvments and mods applied, especially if you find something for the IMS.
  6. Thanks for the update. Are the files still listed as.db files ? I would be interested to see if the map files are actually the same. How did you manage to find the date stamp on the database files for PCM 3 , do you have the DVD ?
  7. From the link you posted there is no item 3 for a vertical DVD device, item 3 is the support bracket. Item 2 is the DVD device and the numbers are the same as my last post. Not sure why you are getting confused on this. If you fit the DVD device listed in the PET catalogue for the 997 there is no suggestion it can be fitted in any orientation other than horizontal. The only places i have seen a vertical mounted DVD device are on the 997 T and Gt3 PET pages. If you are intending to go and buy a new DVD device, your local porsche agent will be able to get the correct parts for your vehicle. If you are trying to source parts from e bay, then you either need to buy a new vertical drive or just accept that the part listed for your vehicle is horizontal mount. Your chassis number (also call VIN - Vehicle Identification Number) in the windscreen will read something along the lines of WPOZZZ99Z5S700125 if you compare this to the numbers under the NAME column for the part you will see these read something like F 995S750849 >> 996S751980 , so you forget about the WPOZZZ part of the chassis number and the next Z letter (this is a dummy) , concentrate on the last section. The prefix F next to the chassis number means FROM chassis number and the >> means UP TO. A chassis number starting WPOZZZ99Z5S is a 2005 model year car whereas a chassis number starting WPOZZZ99Z7S is a 2007 model year car. If you look at the end of the catalogue under the V pages there is a description on decoding the chassis number. Really there is not a lot of point discussing this further, you need to decide if you are going to fit horizontally the cayenne unit you purchased or buy a retro fit kit for the vertical orientation. You may want to look at the 997T and GT3 sections of the parts listing for more information on the vertical mount part numbers. 997 T https://techinfo.porsche.com/techinfo/pdf/e...USA_KATALOG.pdf Gt3 https://techinfo.porsche.com/techinfo/pdf/e...USA_KATALOG.pdf Specific vertical mount DVD drives are not listed under the 997 parts listing which covers all 997 models including the 4WD and cabriolet.
  8. Not sure about the cable ID issues, you would be better to trace the cables out and make sure they are in the correct order and equipment sequence. As to the issue of the amp, this will not be a self update , you will need the PWIS unit connected to the car. The software of the amp doesnt have a level A , B C etc, the PCM has this notation. There are details on the tech bulletins about the compatable hardware with PCM versions. There are some tech bulletins about replacing BOSE amps on the contributing memebrs section of the forum. Ideally you need to read up on these to determine if the amp can be updated. If you are getting sound from the amp and everything works , I would leave well alone , it could turn out expensive.
  9. The actual date stamp may vary from country to country but the Europe DVD is a 2006 date stamp on the file , forget what it says on the front of the DVD , it's the date on the file that counts. As to Porsche reading the thread, thats not the point, its to see how many existing navigation owners are wanting an update and their attitude towards specifying PCM in future as a result. Money talks and porsche will only meet their minimum order quantity from their supplier if they can sell cars with PCM , so if returning customers don't spec pcm , they will have a surplus and make a loss.
  10. The PCM you have fitted is level C and originally loaded with software designed to work with the later amplifier , this is why the earlier amp is coming up as an incorrect version. Providing you are getting sound from the amplifier , then personally I would leave it as is. If the porsche agents were unable to update the firmware in the existing amplifier to 017600 , then you will only resolve this issue with a newer amp. Warning triangles in the PCM menu and differing target and actual values are common even on OEM installed vehicles , so dont get hung up on it not being perfect. I assume that when you fitted the PCM and navigation you made sure that the amplifier and navigation unit were in the correct order on the MOST loop. The devices are designed to go in a set order in series on the MOST loop , if you get them connected in the wrong order , comms with the device can be disrupted. The sequence should be: PCM - AMPLIFIER - CD CHANGER - NAVIGATION the return wire from the navigation goes straight back to the rear of the PCM. If you look closely on the rear of each MOST plug there is a direction arrow for IN and OUT. Follow these through and make sure the devices are in the correct order. As part of the coding you would also need the vehicle handover changing in the PCM to reflect that a boxster rather than 997 was the donor vehcile. The sound settings in the amplifier and audiopilot settings are different between the two cars since the 997 is a different layout and also has more speakers.
  11. I have a dension unit fitted in my 987S. The front luggage compartment is identical to the 997 so the wire tapping points are the same. The CD changer has a permanent live feed as does the navigation unit. From memory I think the power is the green red wire and the brown is the earth. I did a little write up on the 987 forum , you may want to take a look.
  12. Porsche have produced navigation units with vertical and horizontal orientation becuase the navigation unit has an internal gyroscope that is used in conjunction with the speed of the vehcile to map progress when the GPS signal drops out. This is common practice in factory fit navigation systems as it allows the navigation to work in tunnels and built up areas where a clear view of the sky is sometimes difficult. Having checked the online parts catalogue there is no differentiation on the 997 for 2wd and 4WD drive vehicles as far as options for the PCM DVD navigation. Of the four part numbers listed , one has the prefix letter A ( 997 642 135 03) suggesting its been superceeded and that a later part is compatable. Part number 997 642 135 04 is for an early PCM 2.1 (suitable for Cayenne Boxster and 997) and does not have the extended navigation capability , though this is not essential. 997 642 137 02 is for 997 , and Cayenne / Boxster models that were made after 2006 and does have extended navigation. 997 642 157 00 is the latest part number and has a prefix N suggesting its a new addition , it is also common to the GT3 and is shown in the GT2 catalogue as horizontally mounted. The only vertically mounted DVD drive i can see is 997 642 159 00 this is shown in the GT3 parts catalogue (GT3 uses the 4wd chassis) and the Turbo catalogue. I suggest that if you plan to install the DVD drive vertically you need this part. 1. find your chassis number (can be found in the front windscreen at the lower corner) 2. Get an up to date version of the parts catalogue ( this can be from the web or from your local dealer for a few dollars) https://techinfo.porsche.com/techinfo/VFMod...pe=MainFrameSet 3. Open the part catalogue for your version of car and country of origin ie 997 , USA/ Canada 4. Go to the section under electronics for sat nav and first check the PCM unit allocated to your chassis number range 5. Then look up the DVD navigation drive in the same chassis range as your PCM and vehicle. Make sure that you also look in the notes column at option codes and vehicle specifics.
  13. Thanks for the post, but this is already common knowledge and i've discussed it a number of times on other threads. The map data is in fact 2006 on the DVD , so its actually even more outdated. The reason Porsche badged the DVD as 08.2007 was because it is now only available as part of a 4 disc update kit whereas it was available as a separate MAP update on its own previously. You may be interested to add your votes to the poll I started , as a means of getting Porsche to release a newer update.
  14. Any part number starting 997 for the navigation must be for PCM 2.1 since the 2.1 was introduced with the 997 and replaced the PCM 2.0 found in the 996.
  15. Are you reading the replies to your post.? ...I already covered this earlier. The parts kit you purchased is from a cayenne , as I explained previously the cayenne has a horizontal mounted DVD unit that sits under the drivers seat. The part numbers are shared across vehicle platforms where there are no installation or hardware issues preventing it. Therefore the cayenne part is also suitable for HORIZONTAL mount installations in the Cayman, Boxster and 911. I assume you have read the cayman club installation and seen the pictures of where the horizontal mounted DVD (navigation ) unit fits in the car. This is the same location for the boxster and 911 vehicles fitted with horizontal mount Navigation and CD units. If you have checked on your own vehicle and established that there is insufficient space to install the navigation unit horizontally or fit the CD unit, then you will either need to improvise your own bracket and installation or buy the vertical mount DVD navigation unit. From memory I beleive there is space for a single horizontally mounted unit ( CD or NAV) under the main cover in the front trunk. If you are not concerned about having an OEM installation it is possible the Navigation unit could fit horizontally somewhre else and the Cd changer be substituted for a Dension or mobridge unit. The cables you refer to are the OPTICAL waveguide cables or MOST cables as some refer to them. These connect the Navigation, Amplifier and CD changer together in series , so they can all communicate back to the main PCM. Porsche make different versions of the cable depending on how many MOST devices are installed. It is possible to convert the cables if you have suitable spare plugs , the main concern is ensuring there are no open ends. The CD NAV and AMP also need to be connected in the correct order in the MOST loop , if a component is out of sequence errors can occur with operation.
  16. The DVD unit must be mounted in the horizontal position to work as the internal gyros are configured for this orientation. I am not sure you have the space in the front bulkhead to fit the CD and Nav unit as the chassis steelwork is different on a 4WD vehicle. The Cayenne kit you purchased may have Cayenne specific cables in terms of MOST (optical waveguide) and power etc. There is a good possibility they will fit as the cayenne has the DVD unit mounted under the drivers seat rather than in the front trunk, so the cables could be longer. As to the versions of DVD unit , so long as it is one of the later generation devices that had extended navigation enabled there should be no compatability issues with your PCM. You can double check if the navigation unit is extended navigation enabled by cross referencing the part number in the parts catalogue ( link from contributing members section). You will also need to pay close attention to the option codes which are referenced in the MSP and V pages index at the end of the catalogue. If you are looking for a good step by step guide , take a look on www.caymanclub.net under the electronics section. There is a good write up on retro fitting the navigation module and other parts to a cayman , which is identical to the 997 in the front and for wiring of the nav module etc. Since your PCM is OEM fittment it will not have the CD changer or Navigation modules enabled, this will need to be done by a main porsche agent after install. It is also important that the CD changer and navigation module are placed in the MOST (optical waveguide) loop in the correct order. Both the CD changer and the Navigation module are designed to have a permanent live power feed. If you check the fuse box listing ( small piece of paper in fuse box cover) it should give an indication of which circuit to tap into.
  17. looks like a successful update, you have software version 4 which is level C already installed, the latest Bose amp software and telephone module software as well. The MAP is week 29 2006 which is also the latest map as is the navigation software. Nothing to worry about here.
  18. You have a 2007 model 997, so the amplifier will be 00017500 software or later if fitted. The discs in the kit are all the updates your car will require , there are no others. The multimedia update should be performed by a Porsche dealer so that in case of any problems , the dealer will pay for replacement or repairs. Since you have paid for the update at your local Porsche agent , they should carry out the update for you , free of charge. The MAP DVD does not load into the PCM memory , so as soon as the old map DVD is ejected and the new one inserted , the new map is used. The purpose of the other CD's in the kit are to allow older vehicles to be updated to the correct system software to work with the newer map. I suggest that with your vehicle you will only require the multimedia update for the navigation drive to be used. The update procedure for your vehicle should be therefore to remove the map DVd from the DVD drive in the front trunk (with ignition off), insert the multimedia update CD in the DVD drive , turn on the ignition and pcm and allow the update to take place. After the update is complete turn off the ignition and PCM , then eject the update CD from the DVD drive and replace it with the 2007 map. After the update , the new 2007 map will work straight away, but you may have an error message on the PCM screen the first time the map is run, this is normal and expected. Your porsche agent will only take about 15 minutes to update your vehilce to run the 2007 map DVD , as you will already be at level B software version 3 or above , and not require the other 2 Cd's to be used. if they have loaded the other 2 CD's without first checking the original software its possible they have rolled back your system software to an earlier level. If you can take the values from your PCM after pressing MAIN and TRIP buttons together and then selecting each of the sub menus PCM , SYSTEM, NAVIGATION etc , I may be able to confirm the current status and what needs to be done to resolve any issues.
  19. I beleive you need the electronic log book function enabled to use the IR port. This is a few hundred dollar option from Porsche and is enabled by entering a vehicle specific code via the workshop tool.
  20. No, I am afraid this is not correct. The mapping company (Navteq) provides just the map data. Control over what roads are displayed (and what options the driver has) is entirely the responsibility of the Porsche software, which is not developed my Navteq. I don't know who Porsche has contracted to develop this (lousy) software, but Navteq assured me it is not them. I'm surprised at this , as the map updates from rivals such as teleatlas have michelin guides and points of interest on the disc supplied direct from them. I would have expected the map to have been written in a series of layers or overlays, I believe this is how the speed camera database and other cartographic add ins are handled. Harman Becker / Seimens are responsible for making the hardware and indeed thier name appears on the Map DVD also , but i was under the impression that Navteq actually produce the map , therefore would be responsible for how its coded , its layers of detail and so on. The bugbear seems to be that items such as minor roads are not rescaled so that they are visible on a wider scale selected by the pcm. I beleive this would require some additional smart software in the PCM to be able to dispay higher levels of map detail in less densely populated areas , ie effectively displaying two map scales at once. Personally I find the thumbwheel control zoom function on the multi function steering wheel does a great job of allowing you to see the detail of a smaller road as you approach a junction. For those frustrated with the PCM detail levels I would suggest trying a car with this function and considering retro fitting the controls (as I did). There are other benefits to this function such as a volume mute and better control of the PCM , especially if an i pod or MP3 function is enabled.
  21. You may find that there is a loom or retro fit kit listed under the tequipment section of the parts catalogue. Failing that, the plugs are likely to be generic to VW also , your local VW dealer can order these plugs and pins as spare parts.
  22. I understand the frustrations with the Becker systems , these are not the premium in navigation systems one may expect in a Porsche , but in their defence , the interface with the audio , telephone and dash display does work well. As to the map detail this is determined more by the mapping company than the hardware. My plan is to try and encourage Porsche and Navteq to assist existing PCM2.1 and also PCM 2 owners by making updated maps available at least on a yearly basis. Porsche have strangled the market by specifying a nav system that will only work with their own brand mapping software , this results in a somewhat reduced market and focused purely on Porsche owners. Other car manufacturers such as VW , Renault , BMW use a common MAP DVD with other manufacturers and brands of hardware. As a result , the market for retailing map updates is bigger and more cost effective.
  23. Hi all, I am in the process of writing a letter to Porsche AG and Navteq to ask about MAP updates for the PCM2.1. I have created a poll over on the 997-1 section of the forum. If you own a Cayenne with PCM 2.1 and Navigation and would like to add your vote to the poll , I hope that it will add some weight to my request. here is the link. http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s...mp;#entry129535
