  1. Based on your sound file, I really can't tell what it is. Maybe someone will, but in the meantime, maybe you should play it carefully. BTW, the 'screw-into-chain'-issue can happen to any 996 or 997 Turbo, regardless of mileage. It actually happened to Sportec when they were road-testing an almost brand new car a few years back.

Go to your preferred mechanics and have 'em check your car!...

  2. hmmm... Hard to tell and I don't want to scare you, but you should be careful. Check this thread and my story. It all started with a bad noise... Your issue might be totally different, but it's probably worth having the "intermediate shaft issue" in mind when having your car checked.

Good luck and let us know!

  3. Sorry for the topic change, but what is the spec on your car. Why the cage. Its good to see a car being used, ie dirty and not just a polish collector.

How do you find your TT in the snow, any traction problems. Do you feel the front wheels doing much.

If you would like to make this a PM no problems.

Sorry again for going off topic. :offtopic:  I just had to ask seeing the great photos of your car.

    Frank

    :thankyou:

Sorry for being OT, I'll make it short... ;)

I first went for a chassis upgrade (H&R/Sportec), bucket seats (GT3), rollbar, 6-pts harnesses, steering wheel, etc. All that because I used to do a loooot of trackdays. Despite of that, the first clutch easily survived 217'000km. Then came the first power upgrade (Sportec 3, 540hp). Amazing! Later, after an engine failure (due to a bad design from Porsche, nothing to do with the upgrade), Sportec rebuilt the engine and found a bit more power (591hp, 823Nm). ohooooo! :)

Despite of that, I still drive the car under any conditions. Because of a broken ABS sensor, I even passed last winter with no ABS/PSM at all. And survived it! ;) Actually, I even went to ski holidays with it... And yes, on snow, you can feel the traction going to the front, no doubt. But since it's max 37-39% of the whole power that's sent there, the car's main character still remains rear-based.

So yeah, the car just passed 362'000km and bucket seats and rollcage are gone: I have another track toy and (most important!) became a dad 2 years ago, so needed some room for the baby seat... ;) But the 591hp are still here and still well in use!

  4. 360,000 km !!!!! Simply amazing! Pierre I think you have a site with your car details ( photos, maintenance done etc) somewhere?

There was a story about my car somewhere on the net a few years ago, but it's now gone. Anyway, these 2 links could give you some more info:

    http://forums.rennlist.com/rennforums/996-turbo-forum/222023-went-for-a-new-clutch.html

    http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=22070

And I'd of course be happy to (try to) answer any specific question...

  5. After having spent the whole winter in 'raw-mode' (ie no PSM/ABS) and survived it, I finally brought my good old TT to Sportec for a service at 360'000km. ;)

About the PSM/ABS issue, they found out it was just the ABS sensor on the front right that was cooked. They replaced it and it's now all good. The control unit was still ok.

As a sidenote, I had to replace the brakes (discs and pads) on each corner. Since I have 6 piston, 380mm brakes at the front, the whole thing boosted the bill 'slightly'. Well... I guess I'm now good for another few kilometers!... :D

  6. Are you folks doing the Porsche recommended cool-down for turbos?

Mostly useless. If you stop immediately after a hard drive, then yes. 30 sec to 1 min. But otherwise, I doubt you drive into your garage or parking slot at full throttle with the turbos spooling at full speed, huh? I guess that at least the last 2-3 minutes of your re-entry flight were at a rather low speed that didn't spool the turbos at all.:drive:

  7. As Alex mentioned it, the 997 as a different 4wd system. Now that I think about it, the front-rear torque split is purely mechanical on the 996, which means that such a 'handbrake-trick' just can't work. In the 997, it probably somehow tells the electronic not to send any torque to the front et voilà. Someone with more technical knowledge will probably confirm or correct soon... ;)

  8. I don't think it is possible on a 997TT with AWD to electronically change from AWD to RWD. I'll be interested to hear if someone else can actually do this.

A good friend of mine who drives a 997TT just told me that pulling the handbrake one click only does the trick. Seems to have been confirmed by seveal persons already.

  9. A good friend of mine drives a 997TT and told me that if he pulls the handbrake just one click, it somehow deactivates the 4WD system which sends power to the rear-wheels only. This seems to have been confirmed by several persons. (Will check the net about that...)

Does this apply to the 996TT too?...

  10. More competent people than me have already commented most of the points, but I think one's been missed: the mileage. The title of your message is "High Miler", right? But how could 140'000km be considered as high mileage???... That's just the beginning!
