  1. I was also wondering whether the clutch is something I should be concerned with? The car has 58.000 Kilometres on the clock and I know for a fact that he has tracked the car.

    The health of the clutch of course depends a lot on the driver. In my case, I only had to replace it after 217'000 km although I had done a lot of track days too. So if the current owner took a little care of it, the clutch should last quite a few more kilometers.

  2. I don't get it.

    If the indicator is one bar above halfway, why do you want to add oil? The whole circuit contains about 11 liters. When the indicator is down, it takes about 1 liter to fill up. So now, instead of 11l, you have now more than 10.5l in the circuit, or more than 95% full. Besides, the indicator has been configured to show how much oil is above minimum. As long as it's not fully down, you're more than safe. Or do you also fiill up your gas tank every time the level is coming near to the half? ;)

    About the oil change: changing oil early seems to be the hobby of many people in the US. ;) Here in Europe, we usually stick to what Porsche recommends. And I doubt our engines are running worse than yours. But maybe we don't drive hard enough. :D

    So my short answer would be: 4).

    And, some are 996 Carrera's - which are not even the same engine.

    I think they can and do occur but not very often (especially in a factory stock engine). MHO.

    Sure, these are only a few examples I found browsing the forums. It definitely doesn't show the complete picture. Again, just a few examples.

    And I agree, this doesn't occur very often. But the issue is for real, and when it happens, it causes a serious engine damage. I don't understand why Porsche hasn't at least fixed it on the new generation engines... Besides, whether the engine has been tuned or still is bone stock is not relevant.

  4. That's a relief to hear. I should hear more from the dealer on Monday or Tuesday. Hopefully, it's something else less major.

    Any news from your shop?

    BTW, here a few examples of intermediate shaft failures:

    - A friend from Sweden wrote this:

    I just faxed you a copy of the repair receipt for my 2001 996 Turbo

    (WP0ZZZ99xxxxxxxxxx). The car had 95000 km at the time. The engine had to

    be removed, opened and lose parts in the intermediate shaft (Swedish:

    Mellanaxel) had to be tightened. I was just lucky that the screws did

    not fall off and damage the engine.

    About the 997 TT: a very reliable source told me they've found the very same potential problem on at least 2 997 TT engines. This shows the issue hasn't been fixed by Porsche and still might happen on any current generation Turbo.

  5. AV996TT - your profile says 2001 996TT.

    The 996TT does not have an intermediate shaft failures that I am aware of.

    Oh yes it does! I know it first hand, having had one last August. A friend of mine had it too about 1.5 year ago, and there are quite a few exemples on the net too.

    I'm in a bit of a rush right now, but will post more details later.

    And yes, 40h just to pull the engine out is way too much.

  6. Photos?... There's absolutely nothing to see! B) Just a little Sportec sticker on the rear. Besides that, the car looks quite stock. Well... Except it's sitting very low on its black rims. B) Ok, will try to shoot a few pics.

    Opinions?... That thing is impressively quick! Hard to say how much quicker it's now than before (when it had only 540 HP), but it's a true rocket. I'll try to film and time a 0-200 km/h run some day.

    I must say that Sportec did a fantastic job!

    Sportec is now fixing the engine! B)

    Will cost something, yeah... :o But still less than a standard exchange, and my 'new' engine will have some better parts, which should make it bulletproof for the next 100'000km at least. :D Pictures should follow...

    I still have to write to Porsche about the whole thing. Will keep you posted too.
