Vehicle speed sensor

I have just recently got my in-laws 97 Porsche Boxster up and running and took it for a short test drive. Everthing on the instrament panel is working, but the speedometer is working. So I the vehicle back up and located the speed sensor on the manual transmission, but there are no wires attached to the sensor, and I can't find any loose wires nearby!!!!!
Help!!!!!
