  1. This topic came up a while ago with a fellow with a 996. I had the same noise and was concerned. The culprit turned out to be a loose spark plug. I torqued mine down and the chirp sound vanished. The other fellow's mechanic told him that his crankshaft was out of balance and would require a new engine! Oh my!!! Make sure to do all your research.

    There is a thread here with a sound bite that illustrates the chirping sound. I'll see if I can find it and post it.

  2. You oil usage is normal. Porsche says 1 quart in 1000 miles is acceptable.

    I know Porsche says 1 quart per 1000 miles is ok but most cars are not consuming such a large amount of oil and are closer to one quart per 2500-5000 miles with a wide range driving styles.

    Consumption of 1 quart per 1000 miles would mean a GALLON of oil very 4,000 miles or 10 GALLONS of oil at 40,000 miles!!!!

    The oil consumption is the only thing I am not happy about with my car. I haven't added a drop of oil to my wife's S4 since it was new following the recommended oil change intervals.

    The Porsche flat six has always been known for using oil but it should not be excessive as I mentioned above. Certainly during break-in the oil usage will be more. My 07 997S has consumed about 1.5 quarts in 6500 miles with the first quart during the initial 2000 miles. This is a current poll on rennlist that shows oil consumption:

    None. Never add between changes 35.20%

    1 quart every 5,000 miles 31.84%

    1 quart every 2,500 miles 21.79%

    1 quart every 1,000 miles 7.82%

    1 quart every 500 miles 3.35%

    Voters: 179.

The 996 and 997 engines are of a modular design and are designed to be replaced vs. rebuilt at the end of their service life; the same thing happens when (a rather small number of) these engines suffer from some sort of major internal failure...Porsche just replaces them hence the increased # of new engines replacements vs. the older designs (pre996)

  5. When opening the doors from the outside I've begin noticing that the releases/handles are squeaking...what is the proper way to lubricate these things? I just don't want to spray silicone/WD 40 in the two small openings without knowing where the lube is going.

    Perhaps if I spray some lube directly into the two areas that are visable from the outside it might work and it doesn't look like it will do any harm.

  6. 500, using 100% white terry cloth towels will serve you better. Only use these towels for windows. And don't use fabric any softener when washing your towels...any car towels actually.

    A great window washing liquid is 1 part denatured alcohol to 2 parts distilled water. Put in a spray bottle. Spray onto a towel, wash the glass, and then buff/polish dry with another towel. Work in the shade when the glass is cool.

    Thanks for the tip about the window cleaning solution...I'll give it a try. Is denatured alcohol readily available at a local drugstore?

    I know washing car towels with fabric softner is a disaster especially if using them on dark colored cars...lots of streaks.

Tonight when cleaning the windshield of my car I noticed a fine 8 inch vertical scratch on the inside of the glass; the scratch is visible under fluorescent lighting and I can barely feel it with my finger nail. I cannot figure out how the hell this happened and if i look really closely it look like there are two parallel lines making up the scratch. I don't wear any jewelry other than a watch and my girlfriend does not clean my car windows. I tried removing the scratch with some Scratch-X but that did very little. Any ideas how this could have occurred and what I can try to remove the scratch?

    We are not talking about the imbeded antenna, are we?

    No LOL I wish it were that easy to explain. As mentioned it's on the inside of the glass and can be felt with my fingernail, the scratch is composed of two parallel lines (seperated by about the width of a human hair) and is about +/- 8 inches long.

  9. Some 997s have been getting a bit of a misfire under the following conditions:

    Car driven to full op temp then sits for anywhere between 1/2 to 3 hours and upon restart when blipping the throttle before engaging a gear (1st or reverse) to pull away the engine has a mis/hiccup @ about +/-1500 rpms. After the engine runs for about a minute or two the mis goes away. Once the engine is put under load the mis/hiccup also goes away. The car does not exhibit the issue full hot or full cold but only as described above.

    So...what is it, what causes it to happen and has anyone had it corrected?

    BTW, I have tried different fuels and there is no improvement and the issue occurs about 50%-70% of the time.

    Just a guess...oil seal over spark plug needs replaced oils seaps just enough intto plug shaft coil to cause a degraded spark (miss) once oil is burned it stops...if this is it it will continue to get a little worse...look for oil under car side carriage.

    Well that could be a possibility but when the car sits longer than 4 hrs or overnight etc (long enough for the cold start to kick in) there is no stumble. I would truly appreciate further thoughts and thanks again.

  11. All, after much anxiety about this issue, I have collected all the facts from my local Porsche dealer. Here are the facts.

    Bulletin Notice Number W733 issued on May 25, 2007

    "This is to inform you of a voluntary Workshop Campaign on certain 2007 model year BoxsterS/Cayman S, 911 Carrera/S and 911 Carrera 4/4S vehicles. There is the possibility that some engines were manufactured which may lack an oil supply bore for the chain tensioner on the cylinder head of cylinder bank 1-3 due to a production flaw. As a result, the chain can jump out of place in certain operating states and can cause engine damage. To remedy the situation:

    1) Check matching number on cylinder head of cylinder bank 1-3.

    2) Check that the cylinder head of cylinder bank 1-3 has the required oil supply bore for the chain tensioner.

    3) Replace cylinder head of cylinder bank 1-3.

    A total of 112 US, Puerto Rican and Canadian vehicles fall within the scope of this Workshop Campaign. Very Important! Use the VIN range below as a general guideline. The VIN can be checked in the WWS for confirmation of an open workshop campaign (Also see PIWIS VIN information). Refer to Attachment A to determine if a particular vehicle is eligible for this workshop campaign. Also, the VIN can be checked via the VRU (Voice Response System) for any open listing."

    THIS ONLY IMPACTS 2007 YEAR VEHICLES.
