  1. Jinster's new GPS and cupholder solutions installation

I got sick of not having cupholders in my Boxster. So I set out to find some. The options seemed to be OEM cupholders, either the clip on type, or the single DIN type. And we all know the problems with those - not secure enough fit, not accommodating large cups, etc. Also, the DIN type takes up an entire vertical DIN slot, making fitting double DIN GPS impossible. Other solutions seem to be to use a cutout for cups in the centre console box - which means the lid needs to stay open; and "ultimate

  2. Problem solved!

I found a few other posts on the forum. People have had the exact same problem after pulling out those switches to install a GPS. For some reason, the 3rd fuse from the left on the 3rd row blows. I checked mine last night and thought all fuses were okay, but this morning, under better lighting conditions, I found that fuse blown. I replaced it, and everything is ok now.

    Thanks for your help, nonetheless.

  3. Today, I took off the horseshoe panel and the two side panels to install a GPS unit.

To remove one of the side panels, I pried it open and then disconnected the convertible top switch, the door lock/unlock switch and the mirror heater switch. I am quite certain I connected everything back correctly. But now, those switches don't illuminate. The convertible top switch still operates. But when it does, the windows don't drop at all. The mirror heater switch don't seem to work (the indicator doesn't come on). The door lock/unlock switch doesn't work (doors don't lock/unlock, no indicator).

In addition, the window switches, on the centre console near the hand brake, no longer work. I can't wind down the windows at all.

The windows still drop that little bit when I open the door.

There must be one common problem that's causing all this.

Anyone come across anything like this before?

  4. Here are 2 pumps that were replaced because they were leaking. I also think that is what is going on. These pumps seem to go out after 65K miles. The picture was taken at an independent shop owned by Marvin. I think Marvin has been trying a non Porsche branded pump made by Laso with a plastic impeller because so many of the factory pumps go bad.

You don't want that water pump to take your engine with it -- replace it now!

'00S rebuild due to water pump @ 33.5K miles.

Thanks, I am convinced. Thank God I stopped driving it after I figured it was coolant fluid. I originally thought it was oil, dirty at first, till I saw that the color was green. Yes, the original coolant is still in there.

So, how does a bad water pump ruin the engine? Overtemp?

Got to call Jeff at Sunset so why am I typing this message

    R.

I might as well chime in and say it's the water pump.

Actually I had very similar symptoms to yours a year ago. Within about 2 weeks, it deteriorated to needing a top up of 5L a day to get home from work. I carried a few bottles of water in my car just to be safe, while this was happening.

You should be able to get a water pump on Ebay, brand new for less than $150. Mine cost exactly that, including shipping to Australia.

It's a 4hour DIY. One of the bolts at the back is hard to get to. That took me about 1hr alone. Everything else was straight forward.

It's probably the seal that went bad, not the impeller.

High temps kill the engine, or permanently damage its parts. Remember the coolant temperature gauge only measures the temperature at that particular point where the sensor is mounted. You could be getting hot spots inside the engine once the coolant level runs low, without this ever registering on the coolant temp gauge.

Good luck with the replacement. Easily DIYable.

  5. All the relays for stuff up front are way up above your fuse box. Engine and the like are stashed in a slideing tray, hidden away under the left rear fender, assessable from inside the back trunk.

    Regards, Peter

Cheers, Peter. One of the mods I plan on doing in a rear-view camera for parking. I have already run the Video cable together with the rear parcel shelf speaker cables (another mod I am currently doing) from the head unit (another mod), but I don't quite know how to route the video cable from the position of the rear parcel shelf to the back of the car, passing the engine bay. Any ideas?

  6. hot side.

I believe our headlights are controlled from the headlight switch via another relay (i.e the switch switches on the headlamp relay, which then supplies the current to the headlamp), rather than directly switched via the switch (headlamp switch actually carrying the current going to the headlamp, is this correct?

Does anyone know if it's a ground side control or hot side control? i.e, is the headlamp relay switched on by grounding at the headlamp switch or by supplying 12V at the headlamp switch?

THanks mate! I've got a raft of mods coming up. Auto head light is one of them.

  7. I am installing a new aftermarket double DIN GPS unit to my MY97 Boxster. The fit is pretty good horizontally, but there is about 28mm of space left vertically.

I was wondering if I can fill this with the new style OEM cup holder? I am referring to the half height piece that comes out like a triangle on the newer models from 03+?
