  1. Hi, I have a 1999 911 Carrera 4 (3.4, 6-speed manual) and I’m experiencing an intermittent issue engaging reverse gear. When the car is cold (before startup), I can select all gears freely and the shift action feels normal. However, once the engine is running and the drivetrain is warm, engaging reverse becomes difficult. It won’t go straight in — I have to slot it into 1st or 5th gear first, then it will go into reverse without resistance. All forward gears engage smoothly while driving, the gearbox feels tight and precise, and there are no abnormal noises. I’ve owned the car for about a year, covered roughly 1,500 miles, and the issue has been present since purchase. On inspection, I noticed that the gear selector cables at the gearbox end are secured with zip ties instead of the original retaining clips — I gather this is a common workaround to avoid replacing the cables. My question is: could worn or misaligned selector cables be causing this difficulty with reverse engagement, or does this sound more like an internal gearbox issue (e.g. selector mechanism or reverse gear synchro)? If you require more information, please let me know. Thank for your help George.
