  1. I've been trying to figure this out for weeks. Forums pointed at LCA ball joints, coil-overs are dirty/just noisy, loose calipers, hood latch, fuel tank rubbing, etc. Was pretty hopeful I could find missing/squished/dried out pads between the tank and chassis like on the 991 since moving the fuel tank usually re-created the sound - but so did bouncing the front end. But it was pushing up in the middle of the bottom of the tank that made the sound exactly like I heard it. So I bethought myself, "Surely 'tis not INSIDE the tank?". And I quickly banished that thought. After a couple days looking, feeling, and using mirrors to see some more, it became pretty apparent the tank was not rubbing and holding it by the bottom corners to move it didn't really (sort of) make the noise. At least not always. Wonder what would happen if I push on the middle of the bottom again. Oh. So it IS INSIDE the tank. And so as I was just getting the sealing ring free I started to hear it and when I grabbed the sender I heard it and that's how I found that the sliding parts on the sending unit shaft (and the spring) made a sound like Wile E Coyote walking with an accordion inside when the bottom of the tank flexed up and down. Who'd a thunk it?
  2. Mike, I think that cracking you see is the rubbing of the pin on the guide. But I've looked at more pictures and in this one you can see the other side of this part. You'll see the metal spring that pushes up on the pin at both ends of its travel. I'm thinking either the spring is weak/broken or maybe the pin is rocking in its middle - the spring on the outside is now pushing down the inside end of the pin. Maybe the bushing the pin goes through has disintegrated. If you look at my original picture, just above the tip of the arrow you can see the glint of the spring on the other side.
  3. Other one looks same. The pin in the guide moves with the bow under the rear window. It's like the pin is being pushed or pulled down as it begins to travel. Just for a bit so it rubs on the lower surface of the guide then it rises enough to be centered in the Guide and not rub.
  4. 99 Boxster Base. On both sides of the convertible framework there is a curved guide in which a pin rides. I have attached a photo from my car and what i think is the correct diagram with part numbers from the manual. On my car the pin grinds on the lower surface of the guide for about an inch or so. If you look carefully at the photo you may can see the paint rubbed off the guide just under the pin where I've circled things. It sounds horrible but doesn't seem to affect operation. I think the pin is steel and the guide is Aluminum they are parts 24 and 25 on the diagram. Maybe I've got the top adjusted wrong? - it opens and closes OK. I can lube it but the pin is rubbing pretty hard on the guide so it pushes the lube right out. Anyone ever replace those guides? Is that a thing one does? Anyone ever filed down that guide right there to relieve the pressure from the pin?
  5. I don't have a picture but was just fiddling with this yesterday. The wires on my car - no idea if its the original routing - come out of the switch and go over that foam piece (kind of where yours is shaved) and then down. Seems like inside the foam would be better. As long as its not binding seems OK.
