  1. Any other suggestions on spark plug types and brand names, and as said, I only have about 24,000 miles on the clock, however it is 10 years old (I'm driving it more often now verses saving it) so is time a factor for spark plug replacement , and why ? And speaking of time, I have changed the coolant, and brake fluids , but how about the gearbox lube, rear end lube, power steering fluid , all original, again only 24 K miles, but 10 years old, is it necessary to be concerned about the latter as well, is time a factor ??? I live close to Daytona beach Fl ( Florida humidity factor ? ) Thanks Brit Dave
  2. I have a 2002 Porsche 911/996 Carrera 2 with only 23,950 on the clock (odometer) however, the car is 10 years old,and the spark plugs have never been replaced,so Im thinking about doing that. A few questions: the car is running fine, and as said above has low mileage, however it is over 10 years old, so is there a need to change them due to time ? Also, there are so many different types and makes to choose from including the newer Indium (< hope I spelt that right ? ) plugs, which a lot of guys recommend, and I hear Bosch isn't that good anymore ? So should I change them based on the time, even though it's running ok, even with the low mileage ? And what type and brand is best for the car ? Thanks Dave.
  3. WOW ! this guy has a good point ! But why are some guys condoning the use of the magnetic drain plug, now I'm REALLY confused ???
  4. Ok thanks, I guess they would have put in a cassette player instead, how cheap of Porsche ! Where is the wind deflector at though, can you please advise where and what that is ??? Thanks Dave.
  5. I have owned my 2002 996 Carrera now for about 6 years. Today I was looking at the window sticker that comes on the car new (I bought it used with 9,000 miles on it) anyhow in the options column there is this option called : "Technic package" with a cost of $1,960.00 , does anyone know what this is ? I asked several other owners, at the Rolex 24 last year, and no one knew ? Anyone know what the Technic pkg is ??? Dave.
  6. Your correct XMAC, and because the "Dimple Plug" supposedly has such a powerful magnet, its recommended. Check out heir web site on this link, or just google: dimple oil drain plug } http://www.drainplugmagnets.com/ And the one for Porsche} http://www.drainplugmagnets.com/porsche.php
  7. Before I do my next oil change I want to get a magnetic oil drain plug. Of course there is the one by L&N engineering, but after further research I was told about the Dimple magnetic oil drain plug which by all accounts is the BEST ! What I need to know,is what exactly is the actual measurements of the drain plug in my 2002 911/996 Carrera 2 ? When ordering they ask for the measurements, can anyone help me with this ? Also, does anyone have any suggestions as to which manufacturer ? After watching several videos, the Dimple brand really impressed me. One writer actually said beware of the magnetic plug,as after a lot of metal gets on there, a large bit could come off and do some serious damage ? The "Dimple plug is suppose to be the strongest, any input or suggestions, and whats the size of the one in there ? Thanks a lot Dave.
  8. It's funny how Bentley charges this outrageous price just because it's a Porsche. Just about ALL their other manuals are under $20.00 !
  9. Thanks Loren, Where can I get this ( " ATE type 200 Gold " ) from besides a Porsche dealer ? And what about the synthetic stuff , yay or ney ? Dave.
  10. I posted this some time ago, ref the brake fluid change, and bought some " Johnsen's Premium DOT 4 brake fluid " from my local NAPA store,is this ok to use,or can you recommend another ? Also, how much do I need to do a complete flush ? The stuff above is 32 oz (one quart) would this be enough, and should I use this type ? Thanks for any info,or videos on how to do this, and what to use ? Cheers Dave. Almost forgot, quite a few guys told me NOT to use the "synthetic type" brake fluid, any thoughts on this, what does Porsche recommend, and do they make "official" Porsche brake fluid ? Thanks
  11. Well iv e heard this from other folks as well, just how great Amsoil is,and to beware of Mobil 1, but thanks for your input, I live close to Daytona as well (Ponce Inlet) so I'm wondering if I shouldn't try 5w 40 , does Mobil 1 make that ? And just what is an ACEA rating ? Are you guys saying this Amsoil stuff is over rated ? Any thoughts on this stuff, a LOT of people rave about how good it is, there must be something to it, and as far as Porsche recommending it, perhaps it's some type of deal Porsche made with Mobil one ? Stuff like this has happened before recommendations from manufacturers that is, anyone got any scientific proof about the oil type mystery ???
  12. A good friend of mine who is an aircraft mechanic, and total gear head owns a Porsche cayenne turbo, I have a 2002 911/ 996 Carrera 2. He keeps telling me not to use the factory recommended Mobil 1 0-40 w , and to use Amsoil. He claims the Mobil 1 can destroy seals and more after extended use. Also when my car (the 2002) was new I believe a even different type of oil (mineral based and thicker) and heavier weight was used like 10w 50 or something like that, then a couple of years later Porsche said to use Mobil 1 0-40 ? Anyone got any input on this dilemma ? He goes on all the time how great Amsoil is, and Mobil 1 is crap, HELP Im confused :help:PS I live in central Florida, and he claims I also need a different weight,NOT 0- 40 ?
  13. Just got out my original window sticker Loren. Its a 2002 911/996 regular Carrera 2. The paint was Seal grey (a $825.00 option, don't know why that is ? ) Then it says Graphite Grey partial leather (so thats the seats) I assume thats the interior paint as well on the console and some of the dash, so I guess it is Graphite grey, but where does one get the touch up paint at ? Also, I noticed on my window sticker there is a option called "Technic Package" for $1,960.00 does anyone know what that is ?(I bought it used with 9k on the clock) Thanks a lot Dave.
  14. Hi , I have a 2002 996 Carrera , and as of late I have got a few scratches /wear marks on my seal grey interior. I was surprised to find out, they paint a lot of the plastic interior stuff,as it's all black underneath. I figured a high end vehicle like Porsche would have injected the color throughout, but alas, it is painted over. Hence does anyone know where I can get some "seal grey" interior touch up paint ? Thanks Dave.
  15. I can't believe a company like Porsche, does not have interior touch up paint available ? What I see they have done now is paint black plastic with whatever your interior color you have, how cheap ! I have a 2002 996 which is Seal grey with Seal Grey interior paint on the console, dash etc. Although my 996 is ten years old, I only have 24 K miles on it, it's in great shape, however>> Lately I noticed where the parking brake handle goes into the console, wear marks , showing the black plastic underneath. This is also apparent where the headlamp switch is. Wear marks ! The paint is chipped slightly inn several areas (You would think they would dye it all the way through like they do on US vehicles costing thousands less ??? ) Point is, where does one obtain the "flat Seal Grey" paint that they used ? HELP !!! :help:
  16. Maxx ? Sounds good ,but who makes the "MAXX" and who sells it , cost etc ? Thanks
  17. Tell me more about the K&N oil filters, please ? I have been using stock Porsche, Mann, Mahle, Hengst, or even NAPA filters (which are Wix and suppose to be really good) Which filter do most of you guys on here recommend ? Thanks Dave.
  18. Loren, I live in central Florida ( Ponce Inlet/ Daytona beach area) where during the summer the temps can reach up to 105 F (40 Centigrade) I have always used Mobil1 0-40 weight, but you mentioned 5w -50 ? Should I change to this ? Also I've never seen that on the shelf ,it is available usually, and also how about the 0-40 Mobil 1 ? Thanks Dave.
  19. I have heard, and also found out, you can have air pockets in the lines, very easily, if you don't suck/ remove all the air out,and it's best to use a special machine to do this, otherwise you will experience overheating problems and more. It' s not like a coolant change on your everyday normal type car, it's a Porsche, and there are many feet of long pipes going from front to back in there. Thats why I actually DID NOT do this job ( "coolant change ") because I heard all sorts of nightmare stories about, that if you don't get all the air out of the system, this can lead to BIG trouble. The local Porsche dealer had a sale on the coolant change, so because it was about $180.00, and they had the SPECIAL machine,to get all the air out of the system, the Porsche coolant, etc, I let them do it (I usually do all the minor maintenance myself) However I knew this can be dodgy ! Beware of this if you attempt it yourself, better get all the air out ! Interesting note : They (Porsche) of course supplied all the coolant, and labor cost, but they were going to use 'regular tap water' for the other 50% of the fill. I had brought my own distilled water, and told them to use that, I was surprised that the dealer wouldn't have done that also, as I brought 4 gallons just in case, and it was only 75 cents per gallon. You would think they would have used distilled wouldn't you ? DC
  20. Here in Daytona beach I had a reputable independent tell me that if I brought/ bought the plugs, it would be two hours labor, for the grand total being $120.00 for labor. The coil packs would be a wee bit more, but with only 24 K on my 2002 996 he said they would not be needed. Thank God I don't live in Connecticut ! $$$$$
  21. Thanks Loren, it did sound to good to be true, especially for about $70.00 , but how about those OVERPRICED Porsche ones that charge about $600.00 for a similar chip ? You all know the ones I'm referring to , are any of these any good, not just for my 911 , but how about my M-3 , or for that matter any of them ??? DC
  22. I found this through a google search, they say there is a money back guarantee ,but wanted to know what others think about equipment like this, G F chips, here is there link, what do you think ? ----> http://www.gfchips.com/porsche911carrera.aspx
