  1. intersted to hear other people experience, but my guess is: you are in uk so have summer tires which will be undrivable with more than 0.5in of snow (tried on mountain road on my C4s). if there is snow, sign "chains", and you have accident then you will have very long debate with your insurer as they are unlikely to cover you (or will try to make that case).

P.S. remember that from Calais to about Paris there are cops who love to stop brits on fast cars

  2. RMS-IMHO can wait till you change clutch. unless it really really leaks it is hard to see how damage could be done. labour for new clutch is the same as cost of new clutch. RMS cost is negligeble and all costs are in labour (labour of clutch change and some extra). so do the math. damaging transamission is even harder to see.

P.S. question to Porsche experts. why dont porsche just make a hole at the bottom so that oil which is leaked from RMS can just drip out of clutch casing?

  3. RMS leaks - no surprise there, it has little if any impact on a clutch disk itself but clutch disc dust with oil deposits onto the transmission axle onto which ball journal (sp? joint) is put on (it is a thing between release lever and pressure plate). This deposit makes it difficult for ball journal to slide back and force along the axle when you engage the clutch. But even that is ok as long as your pressure plate is fine and it pushes back the ball journal aligned along the axle. Since pressure plate in my case cracked it was pushing back ball journal to an angle and with the deposit on axle made it stuck there. Once stuck it would not push pedal back and so I had instantaneous loss of clutch...

There is no way any kind of oil leak, harsh driving etc can cause the problem which I had. It is a defective part on Porsche side. I will post picks of parts when i have them from garage

  4. so many times i have read discussions in the forum which end "i guess i just have to take it to the shop" ... and? - silence. why people dont bother posting at the end what problem the shop has discovered? anyway... I took my C4s to the shop, they opened clutch and... the pressure plate was cracked! this is a car never driven hard with 20k on the clock.... i ll post pictures later in case people want to see.

  5. is it one strand? if so just connect the ends and put some tape around. it is optics so who cares how dodgy the connection as long as light goes through. you can try this at home - pull your optical cable out of DVD player or home cinema amplifier and as long as you can shine the light from cable into the hole it will play.

P.s. i realy like HiFi shops selling "Best" optical cables with gold plated connectors - ultimate test of human stupidity

  6. No oil leaks, oil level at normal levels. The car only had 20k. I found a previous post someone described problem similar to mine and Loren replied it could be a problem with release lever (whatever it means, if anyone knows how many hours it takes to replace i would greatly appreciate). Will take a car to porsche shop. Sure they will just say "Clutch". But I will request all replaced parts and post pictures here. I will also send all broken parts to Porsche HQ as I am totally pissed off how a car with no use can develope a major problem such as clutch under normal driving onl after 20k.

  7. car 2003C4s driven normally (no abuse, no tracks, no tricks). 20k miles. Was driving today and after one shift (i.e. no prior warnings, slippages etc) the clutch is gone. Can barelly start driving the car. Slips on all gears (i tried up to forth). Kind of odd for such low milage and no prior warinings. Any ideas from anyone maybe it is not clutch. Totally at a loss. Tks

  8. The transponder code of the vehicle key is displayed under 'Current transponder'.

Press the F3 key. "All codes will be deleted" appears on the screen; confirm with the F7 key.

Insert the vehicle key equipped with the new hand-held transmitter into the ignition lock and switch on the ignition. Establish communication between the 9588 Porsche System Tester II and the control module. Select the position (1, 2, 3,or 4) with the arrow keys (uparrow) and (down arrow) and press the F8

key. The transponder code of the first hand-held transmitter has now been taught. Remove the key and repeat the process for the remaining hand-held transmitters......"

I have the memory seat problem after buying new transponder (two original stopped working within 6 months of each other). Dealer today looked at key codes at the tester screen which he used to pair new key with the car. Initially new key was in position 3 out of 4 possible (first two pistions were two old keys). i asked him to put new key into position one. so he did. Problem is still there though seat now goes into slightly different positon than before.

Unfortunatly i have no other dealer to go to and this one says i need to check the car in for repair. Looking at how clueless he was today i am afraid to do so. any possible solutions to this problem?

  9. Gald to see problem solve....but little know fact was that porsche did have a recall on 2002 to late 2003 on weld issue of this type failing.

The exhaust recall that I am aware of was for "...exhaust tailpipes worldwide on 18,627 units of the 911 Carrera S and 911 Carrera 4S. This involves cars built between 20 April 2004 and 21 October 2005." This would not include his MY03 car.

Hi Loren, sorry to jump into conversation. i had the same noise. I managed to get tailpipe off ond there is a crack in the bracket. my C4s is from april 2003 but it was bought in germany. how could i check if there was a recall for that? and if there was one what do i do? call dealer and ask to fix it?

  10. i have a 1999 996 c2 coupe that has started making a clicking noise in first gear at low rpm,]

constant clicking? i have a noise in 1st and second when appliying or sharply coming off accelerator but it is one click each way and only when car is movig at a speed of idle rpm. if you have the same then you have a few years to go (been in my car for the last three years)
