As a new member I have greatly enjoyed these forums. Thanks to those that have responded to my first problem with my water pump.
My '99 Boxster's driver side window just developed some sort of control problem with the automatic up/down feature. Normally, when you open the door the window drops down to clear the top. Mine works fine when you open the door from the inside handle. Once the door is closed the window closes fine. It's when I open it from the outside handle that it has the problem. When I pull the handle the window drops to clear the roof but when I release the handle it goes back up thus hitting the roof when I close the door. Is this a possible sensor problem or could this be a programming issue?
Sounds like the microswitch inside the door handle has failed. Too many plastic parts

So my engine died the famous "intermidiate shaft" death two weeks ago and my mechanic is currently debating with my warranty company...
Be it as it may, I need a new engine, and now I am of course considering a 3.2 -> 3.4 engine swap.
I read in several posts that it is very simple and straightforward but then I found a DYI on this forum which made it sound more like, yes you can do it, but it's not a straight fit: you need to re-program the DME, several parts on the 3.4L 996 engine are on the wrong side, you need to change the wiring harness, etc.
So I was wondering if anyone here
a) actually did a 3.2 -> 3.4 swap and can share experiences (the DYI was for 2.5L -> 3.2L)
B) anyone has another set of DYI instructions
btw: I have a 2002 Boxster S

I finished a 3.4 swap on a 2000 standard. Its pretty straight forward except for the engine has to be lowered. The intake on the 3.4 isw higher than on the 2.7 I replaced so I needed 1 3/8 spacers on the front engine mount and 3/4 inch lower transmission mount. I achieved this by cutting the mount and rewelding adding a addition metal plate for support. Thye wiring harness I used was from the Boxster.

FWIW, I've been keeping a running total on my 2001 2.7 whenever I fill up, and I've gotten between 20 and 22.8 MPG each time. Of course, most of my mileage is either city or, uh, enthusiastic. :D
2000 2.7 gets 27 on highway and 1.1 at the track.

I used wooden base covered with matching carpet to mount amp1 + capacitor + 2sets of cross overs
then i added a 2nd floor out of plexi glass to mount amp2 and 2nd set of cross overs, eh first time
doing this but i think it looks good.. i hope lol.. oh yeah and i got rid of the spare tire to make space :(
here is whats inside:
Amp 1 : “A/D/S PQ40.2” 4 x 100Amp true RMS to run front and rear speakers “high
and mids”.
Speakers and cross overs: 2 X MB quart Qsd-213 for front and rear speakers .
Amp 2 : Rockford Fosgate to run subwoofer
Subwoofer : Focal 13ks , 5” 180 Watts “Bass”
Capacitor : Alumapro Cap5 , 5 Farad.
Head unit : Nakamichi CD-400
And by the way with this audio system music
sounds clear , crisp and sweet with convertable up or down "love it"
I modified both side doors with fiber glass to make a box for the small yet powerfull 5" woofer
"oh make sure you cover the side door covers when you work with fiber glass, that dust is really
hard to clean.. again first time working with fiber glass ;)"
ok i finished the sound system and all , but i need to take more updated pics, so i shall post some
more pics later. Please excuse my delays i get busy with work .

Did Porsche ever offer a limited slip diff in the 986 or can you use one from the 911 maybe?
No Porsche never offer a limited slip. They depend on traction control using the braking system. The Boxster has a Getrag 5 Speed which is different than other Porsche Models I am not aware of any other Limited Slip working in a Boxster.

Does anyone have their engine out who would not mind taking a few measurements for me? I was wondering how wide, tall, and long the engine is. How big would a theoretical box need to be to fit the entire engine?
This is a 2.7 Boxster motor
24 inches High, 34" wide and 21.5" long
add 1.75 for a 3.4 996.

I ordered a unit from Quaife in January with a promissed delivery of Febuary 13. I am still waiting for the unit to be shipped. Plus they accepted my order in January and then raised the price in March $480.00 with a promised 2 week delivery. Still have not received any shipment.
They are a ???? poor company to deal with!

you'll probably have a different host of problems. where did you get your cats, BTW?
thinking more about my issue with the O2 sensor heating, i'm guessing that the ECU just monitors voltage on the heating element circuits and calculates impedance that correlates to the correct heating wattage. since the old sensors didn't throw these codes, i can only assume that bosch has either changed the heating element design OR their quality control sucks. either way, adding resistors in series to increase impedance or in parallel to decrease it should solve the problem.
They are HiFlow stainless steel made by Megaflow.

this is a dealership issue, PCNA usually doesn't touch this type thing. second owner way out of warranty
now the 97-98 Boxsters PCNA knows there is a problem with them, cylinder liner slipping, they replaced enough engines back then. but once again they don't do much for second owners.

The pedal side cable on my car is not attached to the pedal, it is just resting against it. Do you know the part number of the peice or grommet that is supposed to be there? It's a 2000 2.7

I replaced all 4 of my O2 sensors this winter and got the same codes P1117 and P1121 with P1115 and P1119 pending. They were Bosch's 13806 as well with original fitment. The CEL comes and goes. I'm thinking of putting my old ones back to see if the codes will go away and stay away.
wow; what pieces of crap. you figure when you use the more expensive german part, it should work better than the generic cheap part. apparently not. i guess i'll just have to figure out what resistor i need to run in parallel with the sensor to clear the code. once i figure this out, i'll post back here.

Try removing them and reconnecting them 180 degrees. It might just be that the pin connections are backwards.

and a coolant pressure test will tell you of a bad head gasket or a crack in the right area...

Has anyone on this board installed a Quaife ATB Differential in a 2000 or later Boxster 5 speed transmission?
I understand from Quaife that an early side cover should be used, does anyone know why?
Which model shims were used late model (DVY or EFD) Trans or early model Trans (CWA)?
Illustration in Porsche Manual shows Snap Ring on Flanged Shaft how can these be accessed?
Any suggestions of comments on installation!

A Porsche dealer is selling these pads as OEM. I thought OEM was Textar or Galfer without the circular ears.
Anyone know what they're for?
They will work as far as fitting not sure what brand thay are. EBC brand pads use that same configuration with the weights.

Aaah, now that you got me going in the right direction I noticed a 3,2 at the end of the numbers on the heads. Some photos that I found on the internet of other Porsche engines does make this one look like a Boxster. 3.2L Boxter engine? I had one of the guys take the valve covers off the look at the cams (weird covers! including the cam journals) and they looked good, along with the journals. I don't have any history on this engine but it did turn over by hand and make compression in each cylinder as it went around.
Any guess as to what its worth? I'm not interested in squeaking out top dollar, just want to move it and pay for our time.

The Motor Mount is Boxster and the oil cooler looks like a 3.2. It looks like a 3.2 Boxster too me.

Any issues with additional torque from X51 3.8 on non-S tranny? I see that Ruf offers these upgrades only for the 987S. Is there a technical reason or are they only doing this for exclusivity (as if their conversion price wasn't exclusive enough)?

I am considering my next car and looking ahead 5 years as well. I am thinking of getting a MY2005 987 Boxster now and in 5 years dropping in a 3.6. It looks like it shouldn't be any different than doing the same for a 986. If I have any issues, I figure I can always bring it to Todd and he'll have it replaced in an hour. :lol:
I like the front end of the 987 Boxster vs that of the Cayman. I just don't like the VW Bettle fog lights in the grill of the Cayman. I also like the idea of a wolf in sheep's clothing. To round out the conversion, I plan to get the Zeintop (not available for 987 yet). All in all this should cost around $55K and be more versatile than a 997 Targa that costs almost 2X. It also allows me to phase in the costs. Any thoughts? Comments? Or should I just get a 987S now?

Ahh, it's amazing how many people are misinformed on this on other forums... It does make sense that the engine would rotate the same - Porsche would never bother to develop a reverse rotational engine when they could just change the differential...

Years ago racing Folumula "V" the engine was in front of the gear box similar to a Boxster setup. The VW ring gear was just flopped over so we could have 4 speeds forward. Same as a 996 VS a 986 however I don't think you can flip the Ring Gear on either.
