  1. LOL yea it was OJ... they caught him trying to steal my transmission along with the memorabilia in vegas! Thanks for the tips Izzy I did check the points in the diagram (pictures are worth a 1000 words!) and I found the issue.

I went under the car and pulled the bottom black lever in the middle position and it went into neutral so I got it towed to my house so I can work on it. It was unnerving having cars drive past me 5 feet away at 30 mph while I am under my car trying to fix the d4mn thing. I'm going to call porsche and see if I can get the part # for the cable attachment and latch. I do not think it will be a complicated fix.

    Anyone know it by chance?

  2. Its completely severed, I took a look at cable wire and it looks like it slowly jiggled around in the tube casing and slowly came apart, and eventually completely broke. I noticed recently that shifting was weird at some times, but then it went back to normal and now its not connected. I will try and fix it myself, it doesnt look too difficult. I just hope they have the part in stock locally...

  3. I wonder if the problem may be under the car, on the transmission driver side near the rear wheels. The cables connect to a linkage, and have two places they could come loose, first the spring clip that connects to the linkage, then the ball that connects to the linkage. Here is a diagram, you have to remove the rear cover to see them, but if they are loose or off, it will be obvious.

OK I took a look under the car nothing was loose or disconnected, but the cable "A" was severed (so thats why the shifter feels disconnected...). I don't know how this happened but the cable itself is broken. The shifter won't move side to side because its still stuck in 3rd gear. Anyone know the part number and how to install the cable "A?" by chance?

  4. Today a lovely soccer mom on a cell cut me off coming out of the supermarket driveway and I was in 3rd then about 300 ft. down there was a stop sign so I slowed down (brake and tried to downshift) and my shifter then felt like it disconnected from the tranny and I could not engage another gear but was stuck in 3rd. I slowly pulled off to the side and found that my shifter would not move side to side or left to right, and cannot get out of 3rd gear. So I had a friend pick me up and went and got tools and I took apart the center console and discovered that the shifter linkage the green cable with blue linkage on the left that allows the shifter to move back and forth will not retract into its sleeve. The black cable on the right will move and retract into the sleeve and go up and down, but the other will not. I tried taking the shifter apart to verify its not the B&M SSK thats the problem, but its the cable itself. Anyone have this problem? I cannot move the car and can only slip the clutch or burn it (which I do not want to do) to move it.

its the silver metal rod that wont retract into the blue sleeve (so the shifter cannot move side to side)

    thanks for the pic rockitman

    Suggestions and advice are appreciated!

  5. The local owners have put in a lot of the B&M units over the years and never cracked the plastic housing.

What I notice in your picture is that the front blue aluminum shell for the white plastic bushing is not located correctly. The shell has a groove at the bottom that matches a key on the plastic housing. The front shell is off by about 80 degrees in your picture. The rear shell looks fine. This is actually common because when you tighten the lock nut for the front bushing the shell likes to rotate and jump the key.

With pliers rotate the front bushing shell so that it is positioned correctly and see if that closes the crack. You want the groove to face down. You can feel the grove with your finger.

Also in your pic looks like the 2 left side clips for the boot are missing, but that has nothing to do with your question.

Thanks for the input Tool Pants,

I adjusted the blue aluminum bushing in the front and it now sits correctly lined with the shifter. It also caused the crack to settle back into a more original position rather than twisted and contorted as it was before. I tightened the lock nut too much as the shifter was sliding back and forth and wanted to be sure it was not going to move when I was driving. I tightened it just enough. I must have lost the clips for the boot when I was redoing the install several times  Hopefully everything will be ok.

  6. I installed my B&M SSK earlier and was out driving it, it was working fine, then when I was putting all the interior pieces back onto the car, I noticed the top of the ssk where the bushings connects to the housing is cracked a bit. The ssk shifts fine, but the crack might worsen. How the hell did this crack occur? I am thinking it was too tight for the bushing on the housing and it cracked under pressure? I know the housing is a 300 dollar part, so not sure whether or not I should replace it, the crack isn't too bad. I will take pics in a few. Maybe I can sell this barely used for 50 miles ssk then get the porsche one that replaces the housing instead? Ideas? Suggestions?

996.424.010.05 is the part number for the black shifting assembly that I need to replace?

Also I had questions on the B&M SSK. Does it always lean toward the driver, I know the lever tilts toward the driver. Now having the B&M is is more difficult to move back and forth in the neutral position. I noticed 3rd gear feels slightly more to the right, but everything else shifts fine. Is this normal?

  7. Hi,

I have a 2001 996 with Graphite Grey interior. I am updating some of the worn trim, however there are some plastic items I really don't want to have to buy new when the original part works fine.

Question, does anyone know if Porsche or someone else makes touch-up paint for the INTERIOR of the car?

I think some members used regular paint from the hardware store for the oem black factory plastic pieces. Do a quick search you will be able to find it.
