  1. Any trick to replacing this? I feel like I'm going to bend or break some more hosing/tubing trying to get this T-piece in between the two short runs of hose.

    And just my luck, when I tried to remove the old one, it broke right at the hose, so I had to pick the rest out of the hose.

    I just changed out my plastic coolant pipes for aluminum. Part of the kit is this plastic T into a vent hose at the back of the motor. Mine was broken and I could not find a single crack in my plastic coolant pipes.

    This is a strange little T since it is plastic but connects two halves of a rubber hose with pressure crimped fittings onto steel lines. I almost replaced it with a metal one but it just did not make sense. Maybe, somehow, this little T is really the problem?!

    You can see in the picture the gap in the rubber hose below the T. This is where it fits in. Notice the type of hose it is on either side of the T.

    I had a set of Dunlop Sportmax summers on mine, and when we got hit with 12"+ of snow (Seattle), I got stuck 3-4 times... they literally build up an icy version of wheel chocks around the tires. It was pretty embarassing... :)

    I switched over to all-seasons, and they handle much better.

    Do Cayennes really need winter tires?

    Summer tires can render even the most capable 4x4 useless in cold temperatures, snow, and ice. I'd rather drive a 2wd honda civic with 4 snow tires than a Cayenne with summer tires. Trust me, I speak from experience. The toughest choice you'll face is if you live in a place where you don't get much snow. Whereas if you live in snow country, the choice is obvious.

  3. Any updates on this issue? I've ran into the same "problem" where the initial bite is gone, and I've logged maybe 2k miles now with no change. I'm starting to suspect that this is just the way the pads are. They have the stopping power, but the brake pedal effort is much higher. I thought it would go away with some wear, but it hasn't.

    Have you tried the sanding as Hawk recommended?

    I did not clean the rotors, I took them from the box and installed them. I called the company I bought them from and they do not have a anti-corrosion layer. I did have the brake fluid changed by an Indy.

    If the pads are contaminated, would they not just wear off.... both the pad and the rotor?

    Is there a way to clean the rotors with out removing everything? I can see removing the pads and cleaning the outside of the rotors, but getting to the inside may be an issue. Hawk recommended that I remove the whole system and clean the rotors with brake cleaner and sand down the pads. I just can see doing that.

  4. So I a while back when I posted odd behavior, i took my 04 CTT to the dealership in Mobile, AL.

    Symptoms:

    increasing frequency of denial to shift out of neutral at stoplights (would move to N and sit there), then would drop to first gear and burn all four tires snatching you across the intersection. VERY UNSAFE.

    increasing frequency of shifting from any gear to 5th on easing off accelerator, for no reason at all, and refusing to go back (luckily I live in a flat city, or this would have been massively expensive for me and someone behind me)

    They told me I needed a new transmission, and it would cost $8000+labor. I balked, since I drove it there, and drove it home. That's flat out insane. So instead I took it to a local transmission shop who replaced it with an porsche reman for under $6000. Still rough as hell, but it runs perfect now.

    I haven't done anything crazy or out of the ordinary driving the car. I have a perfect service record. This will be my last Porsche ever, after this miserable experience. It took a lot of effort not to just offload the car for anything Japanese.

    I'm very displeased with the entire experience. The only saving grace so far was I didn't require yet another trip back to the dealership. I can say that I was pleased with the dealership itself; their service personnel did seem polite though not very helpful in explaining the resolution besides "it aint workin! You want to write a check for a new transmission today?"

    So for the immediate future, I've delayed my plans to modify the Cayenne's nav system. Luckily, I've designed the system independent of the platform, and have successfully tested it outside of the vehicle. I've designed it with open-source in mind, so anyone can put this system on their car/truck regardless of make or model. Code works fine for ipod and zune integration, *most* DVD playback (blu-ray hasn't been tested), mp3/wave/aac all work, and wireless access point through tethering a USB modem/phone works. Touchscreen is still difficult; I am trying to find someone will to code me a linux driver cheaply with little luck. But at least I made it that far...

    Sorry to hear your unfortunate experience! How many miles did your rig have? Losing a tranny is always a disheartening experience, my previous rig, lost its tranny at only 124k, which they've touted as having the "heavy duty Allison Transmission".. yeah right, I used it to tow TWICE and it blows up on me.

    I've since purchased a daily driver with the hopes that I drive my CTT for pleasure trips and long journeys, but always have its reliability reputation in the back of my mind since I'm approaching 80k miles.

    It really is disappointing to be part of a statistic.

  5. I think extended warranties are subjective and depends one whether you pay up front now or later... I was quoted about $5500 for a Porsche extended warranty that was only a 3 yr 36000 mile, which I opted out of. I'm at a year past and 76k and so far I've spent $1500 for a valve cover gasket job and an exhaust recirc valve.

    You roll the dice either way... You WILL spend a good amount for repairs but I figure if Porsche charges $5500, they expect to pay half that for actual repairs and profit the rest. I'm sure they did the research, so I'm betting with the house and risk paying more later rather than up front.

    Mudman2, I'm curious as to why your coolant pipes weren't covered?

    Try to get a Porsche extended warranty. If not these guys have a good reputation.

    Just make sure you read all the fine print to make sure the coverage is what you want.

    I disagree with the "$4000 in the bank" theory. If you have a major powertrain failure $4k wont even make a dent in the cost.

    Having had a P car that blew up I would never have another one without a warranty.

    Vibration is still there :(:(

    I really dont know what to say. I just have some minor vibrations at about 110-120 km/h, and then nothing. I've hit today close to 240 kmh and nothing, what could it be?

    have done the allignment, replaced the driveshaft, new tires and wheels.

    what next?

    Hello all, just wanted to comment on this thread that I just had to have the cardan replaced @ 70k miles. Pretty disheartening, considering it's a primary component of a typical SUV. Paid $1500 in the Seattle area. Thanks to everyone else for the discussions because I was able to figure out the problem even before driving it into service.

    As for vibration, stealthtt, I had the same symptoms but I had the dealership rebalance my tires with roadforce and the majority went away. The new shaft has helped a little bit, but my experience was the rebalance solved the majority. Try to find a deal if you can, paid $160 for it... :o

    Correct no phone module required

    There is a lot of BS about whether the CDC can remain in circuit. The system does not expect to see 2 CDC's although it was in the original design. So if it sees 2 there can be conflicts. However with a Mobridge you dont need one as the iPod can supply limitless amounts of great sounding content. I removed mine and sold it on Ebay. I suggest you do the same as getting in there to loop it out is a pig of a job and you will not want to do it twice.

    On mine (04) with no phone buttons I use the phone controls.

    You pair it using a regular PCM custom menu

    On the Ipod you get 99 songs per screen

    the software fakes out the PCM, each CD is a different function instead of a different cd

    great sound, very solid

    Thanks. So I'm guessing that having a phone module installed isn't a prerequisite and this bypasses it? I ask since my phone module is broken and rather than replace it may as well get this.

    Is there a switch in there to re-attach the CD changer. I think I read about this, but other docs on the mobridge site suggest it requires getting to the device and putting in a fibre optic loop back?

  8. Has anyone bought these? I know they're cheap and you get what you pay for. But, I'm not rich and I can't beat the price. I don't mind if they're a little heavy. I'm installing the Upsolute chip and Fabspeed pipes next week and can accept a little extra weight with the extra power I'll be making.

    I have the same 20" verson, but would like to upgrade. Mostley due to the filling of the wheel wells more. According to my calculations, the wheel face will set 22.7 mm farther out at the front and 39.7mm farther out at the rear with the 17mm OEM spacers I've ordered.

    What size tires have people been running with the 22" wheels? What's the largest that'll fit without rubbing and screwing with the computer?

    Hey Matt, I'd have to agree with the other guys. I had 22" Giovannas a few years back that went all to crap (severe vibrations and then cracking), and those were strictly for the "bling" factor. I've since paid a premium for forged wheels that I've had twice as long with no problems, even after the inevitable curb rash on 3 of them. So to say the least, invest in the wheels or keep them stock; OEM Cayenne wheels are unbeatable.

    Let me know how the Fabspeed pipes work out. I'm interested in getting those.

    What do you mean by Sport Setting? I wasn't aware of any sport mode on these cars, there is a sport suspension mode, right? Thanks~ Mark

    I believe the newer models do have a proper "sport" button.

    For older models, "PCM off" provides a similar experience, at least in terms of transmission shift points, etc.

    Yes, the sport suspension mode. Oh, and I tried the "PCM OFF" button. Good lord, what a difference! I bet it shaved a half second off the 0-60 time. Going to try the runs again next month, with PCM off. The vehicle behaves much more wild with it disabled, that's for sure. Almost to the point of recklessness... think I'll nickname it the "no longer civil" mode button. Or the "scare the bejeesus out of my passengers" button. Turbo spool time is about the same, but the raw V8 power shows up more.

    3ball, I was also assuming you had PSM Off when you did the drags. Yes, it makes a world of difference and I love showing my friends that feature because passengers feel it more than the driver. Keep us posted with new numbers.

    I do have to admit that I "may" feel there's quicker spooling, but I guess a survey of members out there can answer that, and there's so much going on when I'm railing the gas that I can't definitely say if there is.

    Now try PCM OFF in the snow and good luck. :) You'll appreciate the PCM in slippery conditions.

  10. Okay, I've reviewed my service records and here's a summary of major warranty repairs:

    30k: Two faults, idle air control and throttle actuator... no actual problems found.

    30k: Brake Wear Light: Replaced all brakes. $1600

    30k: Faulty water pump (bearing noise)

    37k: Rear parking sensor failed.

    40k: Faulty washer nozzle (found at 40k service)

    Low tone horn replaced.

    Oil leaking from bank 2 intercooler (replaced o-ring and cam cover)

    41k: Replace driver side seat belt (weak retraction).

    That's about it, I'm at 54k now. I'm hoping that the major problems have gone away... maybe that's why they give 50k warranties? :)

  11. My '04 CT has been in the shop quite a few times... It was definitely a nuisance, but after 54k miles on it, I'm still VERY happy with the car. It left the factory in July '03. Since then I have all the service records (I'm the 3rd buyer). I'll follow up a detailed list but from my quick glance a major repair was one of the intercoolers having a leaking gasket (found at 20k service). I know the second buyer and I KNOW that he's driven this thing to the ground and I'm still amazed at how solid it is. You'll run into electrical gremlins... I believe the some of the bulbs were giving false alerts due to defective wiring, but that was covered under a TSB. Knock on wood, nothing major... the warranty has since expired, and I was offered another 3/36 warranty for 6k... NO THANKS. I told them if I have to even pay half that much in repairs, then it's not a Porsche and I'll sell it.

    I'll have the list later, I'll have to dig up the service records. Oh, mudman2 is right about oil consumption too. :)

  12. Hmm, looks like there's evidence that my LACK of rotations may be causing it. I'd hate to think my wheels are bent either. I'm running 265/35 22" Kumho Ventus ST. They have even tire wear, so I'm happy with that. It's the shimmy that's bugging me.

    Cannoli, no problems pushing your tires to the limit? I've been hesitant on attending a DE course through the Porsche Club because I can't predict how my tires can handle the aggressiveness of a Cayenne on an open course.

    I have yet to see any information as far as tire rotation intervals for the '04 Cayenne. Does anyone out there rotate their tires on a regular interval? I'm trying to troubleshoot some steering wheel vibrations at 70 mph, and after re-balancing, it was fine for about 200 miles then it's slowly coming back. I have about 20k on my tires already and I'm suspecting my lack of rotating the tires may be the cause. If anyone has any info, it'd be appreciated. Also, because my wheels have different offsets, rotating them costs some $.

  14. I posted this over at flat-6.net, but I think it's worth saying here as well.....

    One of the things I thought was great when I bought my Corvette a few years back was that every other Corvette owner, without fail, waved when you met them/passed them in the opposite direction anywhere.

    It was a small gesture, but it really made me not only more enthusiastic about being a Corvette owner, but made me more of a sports car enthusiast in general, which got me interested in racing, joining the SCCA, getting a regional SCCA competition license, and eventually (when I traded the Corvette for the 2006 C4Cab), the PCA.

    Now, maybe it's me, or it could be that there are simply fewer Porsche cars out there than corvettes, and I know it's not a big thing, but I've waved at all the Porsche drivers I've seen since I got my car last Oct, and I've got nothing but blank stares back.

    I'm undaunted, I'll keep waving, and maybe one of you will eventually wave back.

    I think it's a simple gesture, that acknowledges a little of what brought us here, and formed the PCA to begin with: a common passion for the world's finest sports car.

    It also might encourage younger/newer Porsche owners to get more involved in with sports cars, racing, the PCA, the SCCA, help out other Porsche owners, or just re-enforce they've made not only a great decision in a car, but belong to a simple group of folks who love people as much as they love driving their cars.

    I'll also say, that the response I get now, when I get out and talk to a garage owner, for example, vs what I got when I was driving the corvette is markably different. In the corvette, people would enthusiastically come over and chat up about the car, the engine, whatever, and I made several new friends that way.

    With the Porsche, people seem much colder and almost hostile now, and it really sucks. I kinda liked sharing my love for my car and showing people the ins and outs. It's almost as if the stereotypical Porsche driver has been set as a snooty, know-it-all yuppie SOB who wouldn't give you the time of day.

    That sure isn’t me, and I KNOW it's not any of the Porsche owners I've met so far OR any of the super-helpful people here who have helped me personally with mods, solid recommendations, solutions and general advice.

    So, I don't know...I guess I'm hoping that maybe getting started with waving at your fellow Porsche owners might also help knock down that crappy stereotype.

    So...smile and wave when you drive by a fellow Porsche owner! If nothing else, you'll maybe make someone smile.

    Worst case, you'll give your arm some exercise... :)

    That's the thing, all I hear from my non-Porsche friends (which are all my friends at the moment) is that the stereotypical Porsche driver is a know-it-all SOB with too much money... I have proven them wrong of course, but I have to say I'm feeling the unreciprocated greeting because I simply drive a Cayenne. Hey, at least my friends love it, and that's all that matters to me.

    And to anyone who's still upset about the Cayenne, I'll get that 997 when I can afford one, and I'll still wave at ya!
