  1. 3 years, 15k miles, 6 track days, 5 AX days, 2 days SDR performance driving school, my OEM pads are not even half gone yet and are as consistent and fade free as ever. Wonderful Porsche brakes. Don't fix it if it ain't broke. I vote OEM.

    Post script,

Graeme (Highlander) is being very modest here but he holds multiple SCCA National titles and is one of the fastest Boxster drivers in the country. If he likes OEM brakes, I like OEM brakes. It's a little like asking Michael Phelps which swimsuit he used in the Olympics.

    Thank you very much guys...

Sorry for the late reply...but had a small problem - I am getting my clutch replaced (at 44 k miles)!!!

Well, back to the topic. When I look at pelicanparts.com they list Mintex, Pagid and Textar as OEM Pad Sets and Brembo as Genuine Porsche. I always thought the OEM term was used to express Genuine Porsche parts. What am I missing?

I assume the Brembos are the real deal. am I right?

    All the best,

    Gus

  2. Yep that is the tool....

I would check the cable alignment before the instalation, since it costs only a few bucks and might remove a big weight of your shoulders (i.e. trasmission concerns).

One point though, if the cables are aligned and you still have a problem I would NOT install the short shifter, since it might compound the problem (less leverage to shift!)...that's just my 2 cents.

    Best of luck,

    Gus

  3. New 04 Boxster S owner here. I've been autocrossing about once a month all summer, but haven't done any DEs yet. Should I be changing my break fluid annually, or is the standard maint interval acceptable? Doesn't seem like a 50 seconds of hard braking couple times a morning, 7 or 8 times a year is going to make that much of a difference.

Anually seems to be the recommended if you are going to track the car, or autocross it. Some people do it even more frequently than that...

    Best,

    Gus

  4. I don't think it is "good legislation" to make people buy something they don't want nor need.

Unfunded mandates are not something I would endorse.

Wouldn't this be a standard feature now, like anti-lock brakes? You wouldn't actually buy it... at least separately.

We will have to buy compatible tires, wheels (maybe?!?)...Which will most certainly cost more and restrict choices...So you might not directly pay for it, but you will be impacted by it!!!

    Don't like the idea !

    All the best,

    Gus

  5. It is a little known fact that only the Senior Porsche techs build and assemble the "S" version. Junior techs work on the base models for a few years before being promoted. Also, no "S's" are built on Mondays or Fridays, and never after or before a holiday.:)

    :D

    Is this for real??? :o

Gandrade1, also Carrara White Boxsters are given an extra 17 HP right out of the factory.

    Damm it!!! :lightbulb:

Now I see why that guy was always passing me right after the turns! And I thought I needed to improve my line! :jump:

You guys got me with this one!

  7. I had the prices written down when the clutch was replaced 3 months ago but I can't find the paper. Dealership was about $1,800. Independent shop I have known for years about $1,400. A new independent shop recently opened and I met the owner Marvin, who worked at 2 local dealerships. Marvin had a special, $800 parts and labor for a 2.5. He uses a Sachs clutch kit.

It does not take 7 hours to replace a clutch, but that could very well be the book rate. I once watched Peter Smith get the transmission out of a 2.5 in 25 minutes.

All a lightweight flywheel does it permit the engine to rev a bit faster. If that is important to you you might want to try a car with one on the street. They also permit transmissin noise to enter the cockpit, more so with the 996.

How long does a clutch last? It is like asking someone how long a tube of toothpaste or a bar of soap last them. Depends on the user. The Boxster clutch is also small. After my 2.5 was replaced my 1988 pickup was replaced at the Toyota shop next door. I put both used clutches side-by-side and took a picture. They were about the same. The pickup is a 2.4, and has about half the torque and hp as my 2.5 Box.

    Here is my 2.5.

    Thanks ToolPants,

I will let you guys know how much I am quote.

From past experience, labor tends to be more expensive in my neck of the woods!

    Gus

  8. Hello,

Does anyone has documentary on how to remove the center windstop on a 02 Boxster. Thanks in advance.

    Steven

If it is anything like a 2000...at the top left and right, there are two latches. Open these up towards the center, pull out the windscreen. Pretty simple.

Thank you for your reply. I read that the clips are very easy to break that is why I am afraid to try to open it. Anyone has a step by step procedure with pictures to show how to remove and in stall in. Much appreciated.

    Steven

Looking for some instructions here too...I am installing a camera mount and the windscreen needs to be removed on my '01 2.7L Boxster.

    Gus

  9. Hard pedal usually the sign of a worn out clutch. Mine was recently replaced. Sometime I felt I needed 2 feet to push down the pedal. Became a pain in stop and go commute traffic.

You might get it checked out. My disc was down to the rivets on the pressure plate side and had started to score the pressure plate. This does not matter because a clutch kit includes a new pressure plate. Fortunately the rivets had not started to score the flywheel, so my flywheel was reused. List on a flywheel is like $900 so you do not want to replace it if it can be avoided.

    Thanks, guys...

How expensive (labor hours) would you say it would take to get the replacement done?

Also TP will Indies usually charge to get it checked out?

Man 44k miles sounds awfully low to need a clutch job. It makes you wonder whether the previous owner knew what the dead pedal was for!!!!!!!

I will keep you guys posted...

    All the best,

    Gus

  10. Hi guys,

I have just come back from a wonderful DE event at Watkins Glen - what a track!!!

I drove my car there and back this weekend. That + the track driving summed up to 1,000 miles. On my back I hit a lot of traffic and started to notice that my clutch feels 'harder' than normal and it feels like the clutch is doing most of its work during the first 1/2 of the the pedal's travel when I step on it or the last 1/2 of the travel when I am de-clutching(hard to explain!!!)

My car is a '01 2.7L Boxster with 44K miles on it. I purchased the car 1.5 years ago and have added only 8k miles to it. I have done 3 track events so far. The clutch always felt a little hard, but I assumed it is a characteristic of P-cars! Now it is starting to bother me - it is harder and less 'precise'.

 Am I approaching a clutch replacement?

I have no idea when the clutch was last bled...Could that solve my problems...

Please, let me know what you guys think?

    Thank you very much,

    Gus

  11. Hi jefla,

I am not an experienced mechanic, but the adice I could give you is what I would do in your situation - locate a reputable Porsche Indy in DC (lookup or ask around the area's PCA), if not possible, take it to the dealer ASAP. These engines are precision instruments and a oil leak is never a good thing, or something you can get away with...

    Best of luck,

    Keep us posted.

  12. Good afternoon!

Attended my first PCA Drivers Ed session at a 2-day Sebring event in July, after 2 Auto-X events during the summer.

In the words of Homer Simpson, "Whoo-hoo!".

My '01 986 Boxster performed like a champ, especially given my green(literally my group) level of experience.

Only now do I realize how & why these cars are built the way they are.

My overbraking over the course of 2 days caused my brake pedal to almost hit the floor at the next to the last session, next to the last lap on the last day.

My inspection shop said my brakes were fine earlier in the week. My instructor said I should probably switch to a higher-temp brake fluid, given the track temps that weekend(ambient was 100+).

Once I cooled the brakes down, they returned to normal.

Question: Does anyone have any suggestions for Brake fluids?

I found ATE Racing Brake Fluid in the Porsche Performance Products that runs in temps of (F) 536 dry & 392 wet.

Why can't this be purchased in FL?

    Thanks for your help.

    Hahahhaha...

I have the twin brother of your car - color, engine and year - and just started doing DEs this year myself!

Anyway....Before I started I bled my brakes and filled up with Motul DOT 5.1. Did 2 DEs and so far, so good...Knock on wood as I am going to another DE this Friday (Watkins Glen).

    All the best,

    Gus

  13. A bit out of topic...

Just FYI, I live in NJ and was pulled over last Sunday by a State trooper and got a ticket for not having the front license plate...That was the only reason he pulled me over and my car is not even red :D !!!

Nothing else wrong - was in the speed limit and the road was very busy. It makes you wonder where the priorities are for these guys.

    All the best,

    Gus
