  1. Hi guys I have bought a B&M short shift more than 3 months ago to install on my 01 Boxster, but don't think I have the skills to do it myself...or the alignment tool (if needed)

Just wanted to check if anyone in the NJ, possibly NY, area doesn't have big plans for the long weekend and would like to lend me a hand and some experience...

I live in the Jersey City, Newport Area, but am willing to travel a little...

    All the best,

    Gus

  2. Hi guys,

I did some research and apparently there is a newer version of the EVO Intake system, which some people say won't cause the CELs to come out...

Other than buying the system and installing it to see whether I get the CEL or not, is there any other way to confirm whether any problem will arise? Should I contact EVOMS...Anyone heard of this newer version?

The install on a Boxster almost always entails the destruction of the OEM airbox, which seems to be a pain to remove and reinstal anyway. Hence, my being hesitant of giving the system a try.

    Thanks.

    Gus

  3. Thanks Andy for your feedback!

Had one - sent it back after numerous CELs.

A good BMC air filter works just as well (IMHO).

    Hi Loren,

Will I see any improvement in engine sound with the BMC filter as well?

I am looking at this more as an a engine sound improvement MOD, than a performance driven one...Although 8 to 10 hp gain might come as a nice bonus for $380.

    All the best,

    Gus

  4. Hi guys,

Just came back from a wonderful track weekend at Pocono and my instructor had a K&N 'intake kit' in his 996 with OEM (non-PSE) exhaust. I really loved the sound!

Well...I started doing some research and came across several issues owners have encountered with the K&N kit on 996s. Could not find much on the Boxster - but I gotta admit I am a little tired and was a little sloppy on the search

I also found an alternative for my Boxster - the EVO QuickFlow Air Intake - which accrodingly to PelicanParts does not cause any CEL to go out...

I was wondering if anyone has had any experience with the EVO Intake in the 986.

    (1) Is it superior to the K&N kit?

    (2) Any CELs?

    (3) How does it sound?

    (4) Any recommendation on where to get it from?

    All the best,

    Gus

  5. After spending lots of time & money to gather up everything for a whole series of maintenance on my '03 986, I thought I'd start with something easy - an oil change. Unless left isn't loose and counterclockwise isn't loose, I think the tech at the dealer torqued the crap out of my drain plug. The fun part is that it's aluminum and I started to strip the hell out of it with my hardened chrome vanadium steel 8mm socket. I quit while there was still something left of the plug, but it looks like now I'm stuck going to the dealer for a nice $250 oil change meanwhile I have everything I need (including a new drain plug). It doesn't give me much confidence to do all the other stuff...

    Wish I could help...

Had exactly the same problem with the drain plug, but managed to get it out and put it back in! When putting it back in with a torque wrench, I got additional stripping to get it to the approriate torque...

I don't know how it is gonna look the next time around. If there is a better plug I can get I would definetly do that next time around assuming I can get the one in there out next time - the OEM plug sucks :soapbox:.

  6. Its a Maxspeed-Motorsports....

...I read the instructions over and found out that taking the bumper off wouldn't be necessary after I looked under the car...

I am looking into the same exhaust for a '01 Boxster. Heard a lot of good things about it.

I will do the install myself and if I don't need to remove the bumper - that would be great!!!

Are you sure about it, tough? In the Maxspeed website they do recommend the bumper removal.

Do we have enough clearance with the bumbers on to remove the OEM and stick the new one in?

    Thanks...All the best,

    Gus

  7. you want to run a little business then be up to speed

I think there has been some confusion here - this is a forum which relies on contributions - monetary and otherwise - if you have the prices, which you got from your friends on the BIG business - share it with us!

Otherwise, create a small business and charge for it - but make sure not to use the extension .ORG in the URL...

    Gus

  8. I trying a set of these Bridgestone ADRENALIN R001

    Hi Juniinc,

Would love to try these.... From what I heard they are 'Extreme Performance Summer Tires'

How did you get a hold of them? I tried the website you suggested and cant even read it :D !

I am assembling a track set on 17's and am wondering how much the Adrenalins would cost on 225/17/45 on the fronts and 255/17/40 on the rears.

    All the best,

    Gus

  9. ...no-one has bothered to share the links to these info/articles here - isn't that one of the benefits to having a forum like this?...

This forum seems very quiet in comparison...

    Nice Pics...cool link!

BTW, in internet times noise does not mean information...

But again, there are forums that cater to a lot of different tastes out there! Just google them.

As for me :renntech: just because there is great amount of meaningful, well-organized info here

    Just my 2 cents...

    All the best,

    Gus

  10. Hi friends,

I finally went the extra mile and exchanged my 16'' winter set (new tires included) for a set of track, 17'' OEM Boxster rims. I run a 18'' OEM set with Conti's as a 'regular' set.

It is now time for the tires... Since this is going to be a track set and I am not a skilled driver I have narrowed down to 2 options: (1) Kumho Ecsta Mx; (2) Falken Avenis RT-615...Thank you so much 'Topless' for all the guidance...

I am running 225/45/17 and 255/40/17 in the front and rear respectivelly. My questions are:

    (1) Anyone with experience with either tire in a Porsche?

    (2) I am basically looking into DE (track) events, will any of these be better - sometimes it does rain during track days in NJ, but I will probably not push to the limit in these occasions?

PS: Bridgestones RE 01-R are not included in the list for they are in another price range..

    All the best,

    Gus

    :renntech:

  11. I am using the F1 Eagle GS-D3. Great tire dry and wet. I need to replace it and its no longer available. The Bridgestone RE001 Adrenalin is new. I was wondering how does it compare with the Good Year Revspec RS02? Which is better in dry and wet conditions?

Are these Adrenalin available already? Can't find them on Tire Rack or any other e-store for that matter?

Are they in the same performance category as the BStones RE-01R?

    Best,

    Gus

  12. Hi guys,

I sold a set of 16'' Boxster wheels with tires and am now looking for a way to ship them without being ripped off - UPS quoted $320 :soapbox: if they were to package and ship them from NJ to CA.

Has anyone done this before? I heard it is cheaper to ship them individually to avoid oversizing charges...

    My questions are:

    (1) what service have you guys used? I was told by Fedex that if it is a ground shipment I need to print the labels and pay online before taking the stuff to them!?! I DON'T intend to send this express by any means!!!

    (2) do I need to box the wheels or can I just protect the face of the wheels with carboard and bubble wrap and wrap everything with Saran-like material?

    (3) does anyone know the approximate dimensions (including weight) of the OEM 16' wheels with tires?

    Thank you all so much...

    All the best,

    Gus

  13. What is the largest size that will fit on a 17 x 7 stock front? Seems you can pick up a set of stock 17's for around $500 and I would think 225 or 245 front, 245 or 255 rear would be all you would need for beginning DE and autocross and stock 17's would be legal for SCCA A stock.

    Hi SilverArrow,

The thing is I already have OEM 16's and was thinking of using them to save some money, assuming they are a safe setup.

    Thanks,

    Gus

  14. Here is a used set for sale. Maybe he still has them. http://boxcar-racing.com/forum/index.php?topic=618.0

Any good wheel/tire guy should be able to help you. Call em up and tell them what you are looking for.

    Hi Topless,

Unfortunately that deal is gone...I searched online and apparently if I decide to go with the 17's for the track, I will have to spend a little more than I planned since I can't find a used set for a good price right now. If I wait there is also a chance that I will damage my 18's, which are very expensive to replace.

I am seriously considering adding some track tires to the 16s. You mentioned above that while they are not ideal, it is possible to use them.

What would be the downside? Am I going to lose grip?

What size of tires can I get for a safe and balanced track setup - I will do mainly DE events?

The dimensions of the OEM wheels are:

    16 inch X 6 inch @ 50mm (front)

    16 inch X 7 inch @ 40mm (rear)

    OEM tire sizes are:

    205 / 55 / 16 (front)

    225 / 50 / 16 (rear)

Thank you so much for the help and patience,

    Gus

  15. Running wheels with non-stock widths (such as 17x8.5 fronts) would knock you out of the stock class in SCCA and PCA autocross, wouldn't it? If you're new, you're probably not that concerned about it, but just thought it might bear consideration.

Based on a brief search I performed, it seems you are correct. I don't intend, however, to join a competitive event in the near future - apart from some occasional AutoXs... My priority are DE events on the track.

    Best,

    Gus

  16. I've been following recent posts on the HID conversion. Mine was done over the winter using the CQLights kit, as others use. Since installing these my batt and oil pressure warning lights on the instrument cluster light when the headlights are turned on. Turning off the engine and restarting cures it. CQ is mystified and have not been able to help me. The question is if any of you have experienced anything similar?????

    Thanks, Bob

I've had my CQLights kit in for about a month now and I never had these lights come on. What temperature are yours? Did they come with the slim ballast?

    azzar0.

I have had the CQ kit on my '01 986 (base) for close to a year and never experienced any problems either (knock on wood)

    Gus

  17. Safety Note: This is a proven track setup for experienced drivers in the Boxster. It is not great for street use. The extra wide rubber up front can cause an increase in hydroplaning in the wet. My current setup is 225/17 front, 255/17 rear for street and track. Choose wisely.

    Thanks,

I am just starting - had 2 DE events so far and one autocross, but I can see my new Conti2's (on 18's) are not taking the abuse well and they are expensive to replace. I intend to keep those for street (summer) use and get something for track exclusively - with the street use limited to driving home after the event.

Ideally, I would like to spend around 1.0 to 1.5k for the entire track setup - maybe starting with some high performance summers and than moving on to track dedicated tires.

Tirerack website is great, but it will actually only allow me to search for the factory sizes. Did you call the guys up to get the recommendations?

I should probably consider getting 8.5 wheels all around, with high performance 225/17 in the front and 255/17 in the rear to start and then move to the more agressive setup - 245's all around when I get the track tires...

    What are your thoughts?

Do you currently have OEM wheels or you have 8.5s all around?

    All the best,

    Gus

  18. 245/17's are by most accounts the ideal setup for hard core track hounds in a Boxster due to the larger contact patch, wide selection of good tires, and relatively low rotating mass.

Thanks Topless, looks like 17'' is the way to go...

    A couple of questions...

    (1) You mentioned 245/17's, however when I look in the car's manual I see the recomended sizes as 205/50-17 front

and 255/40-17 rears...Are you talking about using 245s all around?

    (2) What wheels should I look for (brand, width, offset) ? I currently have OEM 16's for the winter and OEM 18's for the summer...Wanted to avoid spending too much for a set of wheels.

    Thanks,

    Gus

  19. Hi guys,

The answer to this question seems very obvious - use a bigger diameter if you can. However, considered the price of track tires in larger sizes and the fact that my car has limited HP, how much would I actually benefit from using 18's instead of 16's on my 01 Boxster with track tires for DE events?

Do I actually need the extra contact area or are the 16's just fine. Please, mind you that not too long ago the 16's were standard in 911's with the same engine displacement as my Boxster...And, boy, aren't the Boxsters more predictable for a unnexperienced driver like me?!?

Please, see this as a cost/benefit analysis, rather than a straight forward tire diameter recommendation!

    All opinions are welcome...

    Best,

    Gus
