  1. Hi,

I bought a new unit from Crutchfield.com with a wiring harness that was easy to put in. I just connected a few wires with the instructions and put the new unit in. It was the best upgrade I had done on my car. I have front upc input, hd radio, bluetooth and I was able to make the color to match amber in the dash.

It is a JVC HDR-60 for $159 shipped with harness.

I threw the old unit in the garbage. I had replaced the knobs on it ,but it started to act up on cold mornings I did not want to buy a new faceplate for a radio that did not even play MP3's. That unit really shows the age off your car...

  2. I had a few of those problems too with my 1999 convertible. I just added the convertible pump fluid last week and now it works perfect. My problems started with the back window not working every time and eventually the top not working at all.I would just check it, since it's an very easy fix and even if the problem might be caused by the battery or something else this time, it will prevent problems in the future. There is nothing worse than having the convertible top not working properly when you are far away from home... It's pretty embarrassing. I had to hold the top with my right hand one time on the way home when it did not shut properly.

I changed my top after the seam started separating. It was money well spent. I tried to glue the top and had some clamps on it for a few days but it just was an eyesore. I got a top with glass window and with the heating option. I believe the top was GAHH and I bought it on Ebay a few years ago for about $1300. I've seen them on GAHH site for about $1700. Then I paid a local top expert to put it on for $500. It looks much better than the original even if the window in the back is smaller.

I also got my O2 sensors on Ebay for about $100.

I would also clean the MAF and check out the airfilter, since they are both very easy to do and can make the engine run bad.

  3. Hi,

I bought a Sachs clutch for about $300 about a year ago. I also replaced the flywheel and RMS at the same time. I did everything myself and saved big $. So far (a year later) everything is working great.

    Kristian

    PS.I have a 1999 Carrera 4 (62000 miles when replaced parts)

Who is doing the work? Dealer? Indy? DIY? You can buy the whole clutch kit for about $550.00 assuming you don't need to replace the flywheel. A good indy should be able to do the install for about the same amount in labor. As for your original question, not sure why you would risk putting inferior parts in a high performance vehicle to save maybe a 100.00 bucks... Besides my experience is you get what you pay for...

  4. I got a pair from Ebay for $79 that works great. Replacement took me about 30min on both bulbs.

    Hi,

The "xenon" bulbs came today. They are the superbrightlight bulbs... So they got me with their BS bulbs. I'm sending them back.

I was suprised that they mislead me on the website. I'm sure they get a lot of returns....

Hey Kristian, let us know how the replacement D2S's work out. I just bought some Litronics for my 996 and was wondering on lifespan/replacement cost for the OEM bulbs.

  5. I think the color temperature should be 4300K

    Kristian

Mine went dull yellow and started flickering for about a week. Then it died. There are some good deals on Ebay on the bulbs if you don't want the originals and they come with warranty. I'm still waiting for my pair. One website sent me the wrong ones, so I had to buy them elsewhere.

Did you check if that bulb is still under warranty?

There are some fake Philips bulbs out there too, so be aware. I would rather buy a no brand name bulb at a low price than a fake brand name that you still pay quite a bit for.

    KL

I agree it is best to replace them at the same time, but did you double check to make sure that you bought the same temperature bulb? The colors of the lights change with the temp of the bulb.

  6. I cleaned the throtle body and MAF and all lights came off...

    KL

Hi, I got the check engine light on first for a few days and today I got the PSM and ABS warning lights.

    Thanks

    Kristian

Service light? Is that a CEL or what?

Common causes of both CEL and ABS/PSM lights all being on are:

brake light switch bad (check your brake lights)

    bad MAF

or some other problem that will require a fault code reader to diagnose.

  8. Parking brake warning light works, so it's something else. Thanks for the link Loren

    KL

Is the parking brake warning light working? If the warning light is not coming on with the handbrake engaged, it may be the handbrake switch activated by the handbrake lever is not functioning, which will also keep the top from operating. I changed out the switch on my '99 C2 and everything works great. If the warning light works and the lid operates but the top is not functioning, go for the hydrolic fluid check. Good Luck.

  9. I was just driving home when my PSM OFF and ABS lights came on. My Service light has been on a few days too. I didn't notice any difference in the car but I wonder what the problem could be. I've had a break wear light on for a while, but the pads are fine, so I think it's just a faulty sensor.

I have to look more into it tomorrow ,but I just wanted to know if anybody had the same problem before.

I was actually reading the site and looks like it might be a MAF sensor problem. I have to look into it tomorrow.

  10. I replaced the tank on my 1999 C4. I did it without lowering the engine. It was a pain. I remember that I finally got it done. It was much harder to get it back in there than taking it out. When I put it back in, I put in the thermometer after I put it in place.

My tank cracked 9 months after I had just replaced it, so I ended up getting a new one under warranty. This time it was easier to replace.

Keep the receipt handy for the tank if it happens to you too

    KL

Sorry but I forgot to ask if I get to remove the engine mount bolts, do I physically lower the engine, OR, keep it where it is and raise the body?

Sorry for all the questions, but needless to say, I feel that I am in over my head.

  11. I changed mine without removing the mufflers. I have a C4. I just had a bunch of extensions. It took probably two hours. It was tough. But I remember that I had to twist a few of the old ignition coils to get them out, so I started getting error codes. I ended up replacing them all.

    KL

I followed the DIY instructions (attached)and did not remove the mufflers and it took me about 6 hours total saved myself $600-$800 easy.

It is a pain in the rear - you just have to stick with it - don't get discouraged - it is possible.

I would go with Loren's suggestion and pull the mufflers as it will likely make the job much easier.

A small rachet that holds a hex bit is very useful.

    You can do it!!
