  1. Hi,

im kooking to restore my 997 can anyone recommend an independent mechanic or restoration shop in the Boca area. I’m not rich so I’m looking for the work to match the price.

    It needs paint

it needs a rear bumper repair as someone just backed into it (on my drive) that would be insurance.

it needs the carpets replacing or a redye

it needs a new center interior lighting mount

it needs the window lifter switches looking at

it needs the pax seat electric adjust fixing

    i would like to get

    the wheels powder coated

    A short shifter

    TPMS added

    window tint done.

    Brake cailpers repainted

i would like Bluetooth added or a complete replacement of the PCM

    it might need

    new pads

All fluids replacing (except rad coolant)

Does anyone know someone who could do all that work for a fair price.

  2. Hi folks,

    I live in Boca Raton,  I have a 2005 997 - 911 with 93k miles.  I'm not a rich man.

I'm looking for recommendations for service and repair in the south Florida area ideally someone who would like to work on a gentle restoration

or a recommendation for a reasonable shop that will do good work for a reasonable price i.e. not dealer rates.

I need a replacement alternator i think as the bearings have just gone (sounds like that anyway) and all the belts should be due by now.

Anyone with experience in maintaining this vehicle who wants to earn a little extra please contact me or if anyone has a show they would personally recommend I'd be very grateful.

    Mark.

  3. I have a 997 2005 carrera. with 93K miles 90k of which are mine.

only issues i've had during time of ownership are.

    1. Failed alternator. ($900 refurb has lasted 40k miles so far)

    2. Failed battery twice (florida heat, replacement)

    3. Snapped gear select cable

    4. Aircon foam disintergrating (did nothing)

    5. Cup holder door closure failed

    6. Sun visor mirror covers breaking

    Rest was wear and tear

    New disks and brake pads

Tyres  fronts every 40k rear avery 15 -18 K (had rear camber adjusted to give better life on rears as mostly highway driving)

I just started the car this morning and i think the alternator bearings have just failed.

I have only done the servicing according to the schedule no more frequently.

  4. Hi

I live in Boca Raton FL. although I'm not the typical money bags 911 owner.

    I have a 2005 911 - 997 Carrera I have owned since 3k miles. Now has 90.3k

I'm looking for a good shop or mechanic who does things right but charges reasonable rates per hour

I am getting ready to get a thorough service done. Can anyone advise me of such a place or person who is qualified and honest.

    Best regards

  5. Hi,

Folks I have a 2005 997 75K miles. I was pulling out today and went to change from 1st to 2nd when I heard a big ping sound inside the cabin and now i can't change gear :(. I limped the 1 mile home thankfully

I pulled the console apart and the gear changer has two plungers one blue one black. the black (on the right looking down connects to a red cable and the other to a gray cable.

I think the blue plunger is the reverse gear and this doesn't really move. I noticed the connector was loose and that a black plastic (give me a break) fastener was missing from the eye hole connecting the plunger to the white block and refitted that.

The black lunger moves freely (too freely) and does nothing. I suspect my gear change cable has come loose at the engine end as the console looks ok.

Anyone think i have got this correct ? if so does anyone know a mobile mechanic in the Boca Raton Area who could come around and help me out. :help:

    Thanks,

    Mark.

  6. John,

Hi, no one gets more than about 17k miles on the rears. The alignment is set for cornering and if you do lots of highway miles (like me) the tire wears badly on the inside.

Do you use the conti contact 2's. If so you can probably halve the cost of replacement by going to a normal tyre dealer with the internet price of the tyres in hand. Also unless something happened to the car the aligment would be ok. did you get a before / after alignment read out for the car or did the dealer just get to charge you for the work (wink wink).

  7. Hi,

Thanks, how does the 305 work will it fit the porsche 19 rims ???

Also I think the tread wear rating for the RE050A (140) and the Michelin (220) are both lower than the continental (280), the potentza is (400) but the speed rating is lower W versus Y. I don't think the Michelan will wear as well as the Conti on that basis. also I get inner wear due to camber and highway miles.

Think I'll stick with the conti's..

Do you have a view on balancing. If I go to orbit racing @ wpb I can get a road balance, whereas tire kingdom does a mag balance.

  8. Hi,

    I currently use 295 30 ZR19 contact 2's on my 997. I do about 28K a year (every day driver) mostly highway.

Has anyone used or heard about the Potenza RE960AS Pole Position tyre they show a tread rating of 400 AA A versus 280 AA A for the conti. the only draw back is they are 96 W versus (100 Y) nd I can't see an N rating.

If any have used these it would be useful to know if they are ok for the car. saving of $75 bucks per tyre and double the wear (40k warrenty)

  9. Hi,

    I have several questions.

    I own a 911 997 2005. I want to start maintaining it myself.

    1. Can anyone explain to me how the OBD works and what I can use to access my car's blackbox info (can I use a Mac & adapter cable + S/W)

    2. I would like to get hold of the maintenance manuals so that I can evaluate whether I can attempt the maintenance myself without a large amount of specialist tooling. Can anyone help on this front.

    3. Will self maintenance void my warranty ?

    sincerely,

    Mark.
