It seems like other folks on this thread have been struggling to find solutions (even after updating the software), so I was hoping for some updates aside from the software angle.

No, I'm not sure. How would I know for sure? All I know is that the dealer told me they updated it twice.

Does anyone have any updates on this topic? I called PCNA and they opened a ticket with my dealer. But after all this time, there has been no fix and no improvement. The idle rattle persists.

Thanks. That makes sense. Seems like the best way to go about this would be for me to give my dealer a polite heads up that I'll be contacting PCNA, not as a threat, but as a courtesy.

I sense some sarcasm. The dealer has taken excellent care of me in all respects, from sales to service. I fear if I call PCNA it could be perceived by my dealer as ratting them out for something they have tried to help me with, but for whatever reason have not been able to. This is why I'm here trying to help myself. Am I missing something?

Me? Haven't called PCNA. What kind of process is that? And I definitely don't want to get my local dealer in any sort of trouble. They've very good to me in every other way.

Just to follow up...

The car continues to be clunky at low speed (though perfect once out of first gear). And it continues to make rattling noises in the rear (maybe the clutch is slipping prematurely because it thinks I'm taking my foot off the brake). Anyway, still not satisfied. I find it very annoying. My dealer assures me my software is up to date. Not sure what to do next.

Oh, just to be clear, I'm not necessarily suggesting full brake pedal travel each time you stop. I always use a light touch. It's just that I think that the sensor on the pedal needs to be recalibrated from time to time and pressing the pedal to the floor now and then seems to help.

Good news. Do you attribute the improvement to the software flash?

Oh, one thing to note: I pressed the brake pedal to the floor a few times, but I did not notice any improvement in behavior the same day. Things actually got a little worse before they got better. It's as if the computer needed to sleep on it overnight. The next day, everything seemed ok. Very strange.

I had the reflash done quite a while ago. Twice, I think. To no avail. But I was seeking the reflash merely because of the clunky behavior at low speed. A few months ago, that became the least of my worries, and I described that situation above. For me, the solution was to press the brake pedal all the way to the floor (while stopped). That recalibrated a sensor on the pedal which seems to have cured 90% of the disturbing noises I was hearing from the transmission at idle. It also cured a very disturbing behavior where, going from stop to first, the car would rev high and dump the clutch.

That all said, I still find the 987 PDK to be clunkier at low speeds than I'd like, especially compared to the 981.

I have something to report on this...

I began to wonder whether the noises/issues from my wife's car had anything to do with a sensor on the brake pedal. The reason I wondered this is that the car seemed to want to creep forward even though my foot was on the brake pedal, thus making transmission noises, as if the clutch was slipping while stopped; and when I pressed harder on the pedal, the noise went away. Just for kicks, I pressed the pedal very hard a few times (down to the stop). For the remainder of the day, the car continued to make noises while idling, and misbehave during the transition into first gear. The next day, I brought the car into the dealer. No symptoms. This was frustrating after a long time with symptoms. Why was the car suddenly behaving? The technician examined the brake pedal sensor and found it was in the correct position. He told me that it's self adjusting (with a ratchet mechanism), so I concluded that the hard presses from the day before had adjusted the sensor position. It's been four days and the car has been behaving pretty well.

What was the outcome? My wife has a 2012 987 and the PDK has been annoying since day 1. Clunky and lurchy at low speeds. But now, with 56k miles on it, it's making rattling noises at idle all the time. And going from a stop to go, it revs and grabs abruptly. It's awful. Taking it in Monday, but hoping to go in armed with some info. Thanks.

One last idea from me--it's an easy thing to check. When driving, put your hand just behind the sunroof on the support bar that goes across the headliner. I think there is a seam in the fabric, but if not it's just a couple of inches behind the roof. If the rattle goes away with just a very light pressure on this bar then it probably came unclipped on one side. Dealer can fix this really quick. That fixed my rattle. (I know this is not the sunroof, but it might sound like the sunroof when driving. I know I thought it was the sunroof before the dealer checked)

Ok, I tried felt in the same places as the pics above and it didn't work for me. I also tried it in the place I think fastboydave is referring to (but I'm not 100% sure I get what he's saying). I put a single piece of felt in a place that doesn't seem like it would do the trick and it seems to have solved my problem very well. Honestly, I don't understand why this works, but it does.

Mine turned out to be the 'deflector' that sits on the inside of the roof panel and 'chatters' when you go over bumps with the roof down. I put foam pads on where it runs. You should see a bit of a thin black line where the rubber has marked the inside of your roof. Put them along there and try it.

Just a question--is this when it is open or shut? I had a really bad rattle when open only. Turned out to be some bar across the headliner just behind the sunroof. A quick and not to expensive fix at the dealer. All's quiet now!

Mine makes a banging noise over bumps when closed. When tipped up, it seems fine. I'd have to experiment with it open before I can say.

I have the same problem with the sunroof. If I apply pressure to the sunroof from the bottom while driving, I don't hear the banging sounds when I go over bumps. I tried felt pads in the locations shown in the pics, but it didn't help. Anyone else solve this problem in a similar way?
