  1. I had been using the iPod interface for my 2009 Cayenne, and it worked great, but the wife wanted the Nano, so I just went and bought a 16 GB stick to use in the Cayenne. It mostly works well, but there are certain tracks that it sees, but will not play - it will just skip over them. I've reformatted the stick and dropped the music on again to make sure it wasn't an issue with the stick, but the same songs are still having the issue. Can the PCM 3 play VBR MP3s - I'm not sure that that is the issue, just trying to figure out what might be different about these certain tracks. Any other ideas?
  2. Fluid got changed on average every 15K miles. 47K total miles on the transmission. I didn't notice any metal fragments during the last fluid change, but I didn't look closely either. No grinding or mechanical issues. However, based on how the gears looked, there obviously WERE at least metal shavings in the oil, because the spider gear was losing chunks. I hit DEs a few times a year, never drag the car, so yes, it does seem odd.
  3. I've had the 3.4 in my 98 for four years now, and maybe have 4,000 miles with it in the car. I had a Quaife installed yesterday to cure some wheelspin, and the mechanic showed me that the original OEM differential was starting to eat into the spider gears, and he said it was lucky that I changed the differential when I did, because it was about to get much worse. Would something like that be caused by the extra power? My mechanic didn't think so - he thought it was a manufacturing defect. Has anyone else had similar issues?
  4. One other wrinkle - I have traction control, which I turn off every time I drive. I assume I don't want to leave it on when I have the LSD in. I've heard varying things about getting it removed - some people have told me that I can turn it off by re-programming the computer, others have told me I need to swap out the entire ABS unit. Anyone know for sure?
  5. One of the things I've noticed somewhat on the street and A LOT on the track after swapping in the 3.4 996 engine is that I get a lot of rear wheel chatter putting the power down out of a corner. I have been advised that installing an LSD would cure that problem. So, it's between a Quaife and a Guard. I am leaning towards the Quaife - the car is still mostly a street car, and it sounds like that is the best for the street. However, I am hoping that it would help on the track as well. Thoughts? Anyone BTDT?
  6. For the last couple years, I have had a very slow leak between the thermostat housing and the block. I figured this year I would just replace the whole housing and gasket, as well as refill with new coolant. Everything went fine today, and I got all of the bolts on the thermostat housing tightened. I filled up with coolant, and before I even started the car or bled the system, I noticed that the new thermostat gasket was leaking as well. So, I drained the new coolant. What now? Is it a matter of getting some sealant and using that instead of the gasket? I'm sure the block is somewhat warped - should I try instead to get that smooth? Anyone run into this before? Any ideas are much appreciated - the car is in the garage on stands until I figure something out.
  7. I sent an email to Guard to buy an LSD for my 1998 Boxster. They said that 1998 was the year that they cutover the transmission in Boxsters - their LSD is built for a 46x75 bearing, but supposedly in 98, Porsche switched to a 50x80 bearing. He said that the LSD will still work, but I may have to get a side cover from a 97. Anyone know anything about this? Is there a way to tell which transmission I have beforehand? My Boxster has a build date of December of 1997.
  8. Well, I looked and looked in the wheel well, and did not see anything that looked like number 8 in the photo above - there was especially nothing just behind the passenger headlight that looked anything like that. I think I'll just have to see if replacing the one fixes the issue - if it does, no worries I guess.
  9. I have a 98 Boxster, and for the life of me cannot find where 996.605.213.01 goes - I don't see any valve housing. Was this added post-2000? I did change 996.605.201.01 on the evap canister.
  10. A few weeks ago, I took my 2009 Cayenne down to the dealer when the check engine light came on - they said the gas cap hadn't been on tightly enough. Since then, I have filled the car up twice, and both times, it will get a few gallons in and stop pumping. There is an audible whistling noise of escaping air in the tank as I am filling, and you have to manually keep the pump going several times in order to fill the tank all the way up. There are similar issues in Boxsters caused by faulty fuel relief valves - is it the same problem on the Cayenne? I tried doing a search, but it does not seem that this is a particularly common issue (or, if it is, I searched for the wrong terms). Ideas? The car is still under warranty, so it will be getting fixed by Porsche regardless, but I would like to know if anyone has ideas - I always like to go to the dealership with some idea of what the issue might be.
  11. Got my passenger side fuel pump replaced under warranty yesterday - it was starting to make a ticking noise. I was pretty low on gas (~30 miles to empty, according to the dash) when I brought it in, but I figured that might be good for them working on it. In any case, I talked to the service advisor afterwards, and he said that the gas tank has a hump in it, and that the passenger's side, when they went to work on it yesterday, was bone dry (which probably explains why the fuel pump went - previous owner must have driven on E a lot). He said that you should never let the gas get below a quarter of a tank, or it will start burning up the fuel pumps. I've never heard this before - if it's in the manual, I don't recall reading it. It's not a big deal to start fueling it a little earlier, but that seems like kind of a poor design. Anyone else heard of this?
  12. I've noticed than when I first start the car in the mornings, the temp gauge usually reads between 15-20 high (it is stored overnight in a detached garage). I find that as I drive, it drops and gets close to the outside temp, but it takes quite awhile. Any ideas? Is this normal? Does it need a new sensor?
  13. I don't think so - it doesn't seem to be coming from the tires - more centrally located. Tires/wheels shouldn't cause vibration issues at idle.
  14. 2009 Cayenne. Seems to have a lot of vibration at slow speeds, and you can really feel it through the drivers seat at idle (I've discovered that all Cayennes have some vibration at idle, but this seems to be a lot more apparent). Also, coming to a stop you get a lot of vibration (especially when coming to hard stop). Ideas? Driveshaft issues? Motor/transmission mounts?
  15. It's mostly 15 I'm asking about - looks like it just pops out. Actually, most of the components look like they just pop out.
  16. I need the disassemble the back of the center console (where the vents and cupholders for the rear seats are) on a 2009 Cayenne. There is a big plastic piece between the cupholders and vents - does that just pull off? The reason I'm doing this is because something is rattling around in there - I assume the previous owner's kids threw some change in there or something.
  17. My 1998 Boxster was optioned with traction control. After getting the car tuned to correctly use the 3.4, when I'm down at the track, I get an awful lot of axle hop that I believe an LSD would help fix. However, I obviously need to get the TC completely disabled. I had Todd at Protomotive do the tuning, and I have an email in with him to see if I can just send the computer in and have him turn it off. Is that the only place I need to turn it off? Are there other issues I need to consider? Can TC be turned off with a PST, or does it require special software like Todd has?
  18. I just purchased a 2009 Cayenne, and the key fobs are really beat up (but the keys and remotes work just fine). I notice there are folks on the auction site that sell the fobs, and I'm wondering how tough it is to swap the guts out of my existing keys into new fobs/housings. Anyone done this?
  19. Just bought a 2009 Cayenne with PCM and the universal audio interface. I just got the y-cable today. It works great through PCM, and the iPod charges just fine. However, when I shut the car off, the iPod still shows on and charging - I'm concerned that it will stay on and drain the battery. Does the iPod ever shut off? Are there settings that affect it?
  20. Ah, screw it - I'll just epoxy it on. I don't know why I would ever take off the plug, and I guess I'll buy the new piece if that day ever comes.
  21. So, on my 2009 Cayenne, I bought the Polak part to plug into the receptacle on the car. However, as I was trying to plug it in, the little plastic clip on the car piece broke. So, it appears I need a new cable. First, if anyone has a part number, that would be helpful. Second, where does the other end of the cable go? I assume it hooks into either a control unit or another wiring harness somewhere. **** mistake is probably going to set me back at least $100.
  22. I was out at a PCA Club Race this weekend, and was chatting with some of the Boxster Spec guys, and they said that they all run transmission coolers (they especially mentioned that the third gear synchro goes bad without cooling). Since I run track days with my 986 3.4 conversion, and I'm putting about 100 more HP through the gearbox than they are, I'm wondering if I should consider a cooler? It looks like it's not too big a deal to include fittings during a transmission rebuild - I think the big question would be where to mount the cooler. I'm already running the GT3 center cooler up front. The Spec guys mount it below the rear trunk with mesh through the rear bumper, but I'd rather not do that to a street car. Thoughts? Honestly, I've never really heard of the transmission needing a cooler, and maybe I should just wait until my gearbox blows up to worry about it ;)
  23. It looks like Suncoast sells a kit to upgrade just the front brakes to S calipers/rotors - I'm wondering how much this throws off the brake balance (which is already biased quite a bit towards the front). Anyone done just the fronts?
